Charlotte, Violet, Skye and Lane woke up with an eye snap. While physically separated, the four’s minds were as one on this fine morning. The CAT was relegated to an afterthought as the matter of the get-together tonight dominated the group’s thoughts.
They sprang out of bed as though on fire and then rushed through their morning routines before heading out, all the while, burning in anticipation and excitement.
“Heya Violet~”
“Morning princess.”
Violet shut her door and turned rightward to the speakers. “Morning Skye, morning Charlotte,” she returned while showing a radiant smile, which struck the twins like a lightning bolt.
Charlotte recovered from the stun first and flashed a bright smile of her own before saying, “That smile, excited aren’t we?”
Violet nodded, not hiding her feelings. “I’m looking forward to tonight. Ralf talks a big game but he seems like the type to deliver.”
“Indeed,” Skye said. “Big claims require big evidence; that’s what he said, so I doubt he’ll leave us disappointed.”
“Yeah,” Charlotte followed up as the trio broke into stride. “Yesterday’s showing against Roxy and Adrian as well as Lane’s stellar review cleared out all doubts in my mind. Tonight will be one to remember, of that, I’m sure.”
The air Mimic wholeheartedly agreed and even began bouncing up and down as excitement temporarily overwhelmed him. “Psi games, aah, I can’t wait to play them,” he said, voice leaking desire and impatience. “What about you princess, looking forward to some Psi gaming?”
“Yeah, I am. Though…I’m far more interested in learning more about anime and manga,” the princess answered, her artistic soul stirring with expectation.
“Oh yeah, he did say he knew the creators during his introduction,” Charlotte rubbed her chin while sporting a thoughtful look. “He’s a bundle of mysterious that one; hopefully, I can squeeze a few juicy secrets out of him.”
Skye pulled a face at the phrasing, but nevertheless offered a suggestion.“A few hugs will probably do the trick, brother seems to love them.”
“Mm, not a bad idea, actually.”
The twins and Violet continued their conversation as they headed to the food hall on the first floor. With basically no credits, it was the only place they could eat at. Along the way, they passed several other students making their way down as well.
Entering the food hall, the trio’s eyes were immediately attracted to a certain table. They weren’t alone, dozens of gazes were aimed in that direction as well, most of them shining with unfriendly lights.
The trio noted these looks but couldn’t blame them, the Psi text floating above the table was aggravating, to say the least. After smiling bitterly to themselves and trading wry glances, the trio approached the ‘Winners table’.
“Halt,” Ralf said forcefully when the trio neared. He then formed a Psi scouter and examined the trio one by one, all while sporting a serious face. “Pass pass and…” He paused as his gaze hovered over Violet. “...you pass too. Okay,” he dismissed the Psi scouter by crushing it in his hand before gesturing to the table’s empty seats, “you are all worthy, you may take your seats.”
The twins moved to seat themselves, but Violet stayed put. She stood awkwardly, her expression torn between amusement and confusion. She pointed to herself and stated the obvious, “Um, I lost, though.”
Ralf shook his head at her flawed reasoning.
“And? That doesn’t mean anything. The difference between a loser and a winner is the mindset they hold, not their overall results. A person can win a million times and still be a loser. The reverse is true as well. I’ve lost more times than everyone here…combined, and yet I’m undoubtedly a winner. It’s a mindset thing, and you’ve got a similar one, I can tell. So, take a seat, Lightning Princess.”
“Ah…thanks.” Face flushing from the complement, Violet seated herself beside Charlotte.
The Onic Master looked on with an amused expression. Noting Lane’s and Ralf’s emptied trays, Charlotte sent out telepathic links to Skye and Violet and then to the staff in the distance. As the Mimic pair put in their orders, Charlotte refocused her sights on Ralf.
“Bloodline of Fire, indeed, you’ve lit a fire under quite a few bellies here, Ralf,” Charlotte glanced around and captured the many agitated faces.
The Transmigrator’s exchange with Violet hadn’t chilled the crowd’s temperature at all - rather, it did the opposite; they were even more riled-up now.
“As intended,” Ralf said with a sagely nod. “The fact that there are only so few at this table is a troubling sight. I thought I’d give them a push. Hot air rises…so hopefully, they would too.”
“Hm, so you want a challenge then?” Charlotte followed up.
“Of course. There’s nothing better than smashing through a sturdy wall and relishing in its destruction in the aftermath. That said,” he suddenly deflated and let out a long-suffering sigh before giving voice to an unfortunate truth, “those who I’d call a sturdy wall are hard to come by for me.”
“Oh,” Charlotte narrowed her eyes at the claim. “Do I not register as a sturdy wall in your eyes?”
“At present, nope,” Ralf responded honestly, much to the displeasure of the Onic Master, whose stare quickly became a glare.
She was no less prideful than the duo, so the words instantly set her off. Triggered, her beautiful face welcomed a sprinkle of red makeup. The Transmigrator wasn’t done though.
“Right now, my scouter registers you as no more than a stacking of pillows,” he said as his eyes flashed over her front.
“Hmph, you’ll live to regret those words, Ralf,” she said, now fully scowling. Posture leaned forward, her aura grew rowdy around her curvy form. “You want a challenge right, I’ll give you one…that is, if you’re daring enough to accept it,” Charlotte fired back, ignited no different than the students in her surroundings.

“I’m listening,” Ralf said, interest and amusement battling for supremacy in his heart. A small smile crept onto his face as the mischievous devils got comfortable on his shoulders.
“The CAT. Let’s compete in that. The highest overall score wins.”
“Hm, wins what?”
“Anything. The winner can ask the losers to do anything,” the Onic Master stated with emphasis, her voice and gaze, resolute.
Ralf’s eyes flickered at the Onic Master’s daring words. ‘She has quite the pair on her… well, certainly. Bold and beautiful, Charlotte Evans, it seems I’ve underestimated you.’ Regaining his bearings moments later, he pointed out the obvious.
“Losers,” Ralf repeated, catching the nuance.
Charlotte tapped her brother’s shoulder. “Skye’s competing as well. Right, brother?”
“Uh, me too?”
“Yeah, you too.”
“Um, ah…”
The Onic Master squinted at her brother’s sheepishness. Using a high-speed telepathic communication link, she flooded his mind with her words.
[The CAT measures one’s physical, mental and psionic abilities, with psionic abilities being where most points are earned. We can’t compete in the first category, but we should be able to catch up with the other two. I’m confident in myself but having some insurance won’t hurt. Think about it, we can have all our questions answered at once. As for the anythings he’ll ask of us if he happens to somehow win, most likely, it’ll just be hugs again.]
The string of words ran through Skye’s mind in less than a second, and quickly shifted the Mimic’s stance. Agreeing with her reasoning, his posture turned confident.
“Yeah, count me in,” he said, exuding newfound machismo, even smashing his fist into his chest. “Ralf, I address you as ‘brother’, but are you the older brother or the younger brother? Let’s have the CAT’s results answer this question, shall we?”
“Very well, brother. Let’s open the box and settle this uncertainty once and for all.”
Charlotte blinked in approval before moving to better her odds. “Violet, Lane, want in?”
“Sure, I’m game.” Lane agreed at once. From the tone of his voice, he seemed to already have a wish in mind.
Violet was more hesitant, still stuck on the reward. “Um, about anything…what do you mean by that? Anything anything?”
“Good question,” Ralf cupped his chin. “Let’s restrict it to…nothing weird.”
“But…what is weird?” Charlotte asked, genuinely unsure.
At the question, the group fell into silence. None of them believed themselves to be normal, so what counted as ‘weird’ was hard to pin.
“How about this,” Ralf snapped his fingers with a solution. “Let’s go with: nothing heinous, nothing long-term, nothing that would get us in trouble at the Academy, and nothing sexual. How does that sound?”
“Mm, okay,” Charlotte said, slightly disappointed at the last restriction.
“What about the others?”
Lane, Skye and Violet followed up with their agreements.
“Good, then it’s settled,” Ralf clapped his hands, a great smile springing to his face.
His mind swirled with possibilities, all of which, excited him. ‘What to do, what to do,’ he questioned internally, not doubting his future victory in the slightest.
The Transmigrator’s arrogance quickly left the confines of his thoughts and materialised itself in reality, altering Ralf’s posture, expression and mental signal to perfectly broadcast itself to all those observing. There was no doubt in people’s minds about what Ralf believed his chances were…and it set off a fresh new wave of agitation in the crowd.
Ralf wouldn’t see this tsunami hit though.
“Off already?” Skye asked as he saw Ralf get up.
“Yeah, I’m part of the early batch, so I’m off. Good luck on your tests, you’ll need it…and that goes for the rest of you too, good luck,” Ralf raised his voice as he fanned his gaze over the surroundings.
Flashing a cheeky smile at the end, he telekinetically returned his empty tray to the counter and then with a confident stride and giddy hum, made his exit to the sound of teeth-gnashing and hands’ cracking.
