“Kuh, what a cocky bastard.”
“Yeah, one good showing and now he thinks he’s peerless.”
“So full of himself. Are all Pathers like that?”
“Winners table, more like a wiener’s table. Such a dick.”
In his wake and even after his exit, heated conversations revolving around the Transmigrator echoed throughout the venue.
“What fools, getting riled up like this, they’re just dancing in his palm,” Charlotte shook her head as she took in the frenzied crowd. “The more agitated you are, the worse you’ll do on the CAT, and that’s exactly what he wants. So foolish,” she said with a scoff.
Observing the riled-up students had allowed the Onic Master to cool off her own emotions, though determination continued to burn just as brightly in her gaze.
‘Says you…you were dancing in a certain palm only seconds ago.’ Skye gave his sister a look…and only that, choosing to wisely keep his thoughts to himself.
Instead…
“So, what now?”
“We go all out, obviously.” Charlotte cracked her hands before interlocking her fingers. She shut her eyes and brought up images of the Transmigrator, causing her face to involuntary flinch.
“Ralf’s confidence can’t be unfounded. His physical abilities are top-notch, and I imagine his psionic abilities are also top-notch. As for mental abilities…he plays the fool, but there’s intelligence in those eyes,” the Onic Master reluctantly admitted, even releasing a small sigh. “His scores will be up there, no doubt. Still,” her eyes snapped open, revealing a dazzling light, “he’s made the mistake of underestimating me…of underestimating us. We’ll come out on top and get our wishes granted one way or another.”
Charlotte’s words inspired agreement from the others. The Onic Master showed a look of approval at the collective response. While her assessment of the Transmigrator was high, she was confident that at least one of the four would be able to best Ralf.
“Excellent, I like the look on your faces, those are the faces of would-be-winners,” she said, satisfied. “Now, with that out of the way…Lane,” her gaze landed on the former assassin and narrowed, “you have answers to my questions.”
Following the words, Charlotte directed a telepathic link his way. Lane didn’t resist and let the connection form. At the same time, she linked her other telepathic links to form a telepathic network, allowing Violet and Skye to listen in as well.
[About the games? About Ralf?] Lane guessed.
[Yes and yes, spill everything you know. Of course, not for free. I’ll make it worth your while…] Saying this, Charlotte’s hand moved to her bag where she retrieved a chocolate ball. She placed it before Lane and nudged it his way. [...here you go, make sure to savour it.]
‘Another magical candy,’ the former assassin commented internally before accepting the candy. The last magical candy hadn’t levelled him up but maybe this one would do the trick, he couldn’t help but think.
[Payment accepted,] Lane confirmed, stuffing the candy in his waist bag. He then interlocked his fidgety fingers before making good on his end of the deal. [I can answer the former but not the latter. Not because of some special obligation, I simply don’t know him that well.]
[You don’t?] Skye said, surprised.
[I don’t and couldn’t. After all, I met Ralf for the first time yesterday, an hour or so before you guys did. I know as much as you do - no,” Lane corrected as he remembered the trio’s first reactions to the Transmigrator, “compared to me, you three are more in the know. I had no idea he was a Pather or that he was connected to anime. We just met on the train ride here and became friends not even a day ago.]
The trio’s brows shot up at the words.
[Mm, with the vibe you two were giving off, I reckoned you two knew each other for much longer, it’s kind of surprising,] Charlotte said, voicing her and Violet’s feelings.
[Surprising in a way and yet completely expected in another,] Skye said with a wry smile. [I mean, we’re talking about Ralf here. Brother moves at a lightning pace.] The air Mimic’s words garnered strong agreement as the group remembered the series of hugs yesterday.
[Yeah, he’s definitely the type to put out on the first date,] Charlotte added with a confident nod.
[I wouldn’t go that far, well, regardless, we’re getting off track. Brother Lane, please continue.]
[There’s not much else to say. After we became friends, we played Psi games, and then the introductions happened. We spent some time at the Communication Centre, but most of that was me playing Psi games by myself. That’s the extent of my knowledge about him…]
[Lane?] Skye spoke up as the former assassins’ suddenly went quiet.
[There’s actually one other thing worth mentioning.] The trio’s concentration spiked as the former assassin’s speech slowed. [I mentioned I had to report my delivery mission’s success. Well, the person I was reporting to was Sigurd, the Psionic Association Head.]
The trio’s eyes flicked at the revelation.

[The topic of Ralf came up in our meeting.]
[You brought it up?] Charlotte asked, curiosity bleeding from her eyes.
[No, Sigurd did,] Lane clarified. [It seems he set mine and Ralf’s meeting in motion. Sending me out on the delivery mission was just an excuse he used to get me and Ralf on the same train. He hoped that we’d hit it off as he called it…and well, it worked.]
Being manipulated and having knowledge of that fact usually inspired negative feelings in one, but this wasn’t the case for Lane, not when he learned of it and certainly not now. Negative emotions were entirely absent from his heart and this reflected clearly on his face, as a noticeable trace of glee painted his expression. His pale skin glowed with a soft radiance and his usually void-like gaze was briefly turned into a starry night.
The trio observed the former assassin in a new light in the passing moments, entranced by his countenance.
[Back to the main point,] Lane quickly returned to his doll-like stasis and continued. [Curious, I asked Sigurd what he knew about Ralf but he kept his lips shut, well mostly, saying that I should learn about Ralf from Ralf himself.]
[Mostly,] Violet honed in on the word.
Lane’s eyes shifted to the princess and met with her purple eyes looking directly at him. It was the first time the pair’s eyes had met since they locked gazes during his introduction.
Lane didn’t think anything of their gazes meeting, though, the princess couldn’t feel the same way. Two seconds was all she could manage before she blinked and averted her gaze.
The former assassin felt neither here nor there about her response, as his blank face perfectly illustrated. He directed his sights to his open palm, where small Psi orbs were summoned to race around in circles. Staring at them, he addressed the princess’ curiosity.
[Sigurd kept his cards close to his chest…but he did reveal one important thing. He’s more in the know about Ralf than us, but not by much. Ralf is an enigma to not just us, but even Sigurd himself, Head of one of the Pillar factions. When I asked him about the impossibilities I observed, he wasn’t too surprised. In his own words: “Ralf and impossibilities go hand-in-hand. He’s a talented Rank 3 Telekinetic on the surface, but beneath, he’s something else entirely, something not yet understood. The extent of his capabilities isn’t fully known, not even to me”.]
The trio was thrown into a lengthy bout of silence as their minds struggled to process the shocking words.
While they were reeling, three trays floated over to the table. The arrival of the trio’s food worked to free them from their chaotic thoughts. Out of their daze, they dove into their meals, digesting the mediocre food along with Lane’s revelations.
[That was quite a lot to take in,] Charlotte said, recovering first of the trio. [Okay, on to the next. The regular Psi games. Can you tell us more about them? Like, how they look, and the features and whatnot. Before seeing the real, I want to see the fake, you know. Also…here.]
Lane accepted a second chocolate ball from Charlotte and nodded. [Sure. I’ll try to illustrate and explain Psi games as best as I can.]
Following the words, Lane began his presentation.
He used his Psi to construct various models from the Psi games. He went step by step, starting with the Psi controller and then the opening menu slabs and then the grid of games, before moving on to the individual games and their components.
He was thorough in his recreations, having already memorised nearly every visual and mechanical detail of all twenty-five games. He didn’t have time to explain every game, so chose to focus on Psi fighters.
He recreated the standard setup and then, with a Psi controller in hand, showed how it was supposed to work. He pressed buttons and moved the Psi figures with his telekinesis, replicating movements, attacks, etc.
The trio absorbed Lane’s limited gamer knowledge with sparkling eyes and vibrating bodies. Everything they heard and saw only furthered their anticipation and excitement for tonight’s get-together.
“A play? Dolls?”
“What are they doing?”
“Hell if I know.”
“Argh, fuck, if only I could hear something - hey, her lips moved just now, anyone catch anything?”
The other students watched what the group were up to with great interest…and great confusion.
With the group communicating via telepathic links, those in the surroundings were left to wonder as they observed the animated mutes and seemingly random Psi constructs.
The former assassin was conscious of his nosy surroundings and made sure to construct Psi games bit by bit and in such a way that it would be confusing without his running commentary. In the end, his measures were successful as none of the other students picked up on what the group were discussing.
Fifteen minutes later, their session came to an end as the four were called upon by their PAs. They parted with ‘good lucks’, each one determined to win the bet and get their wishes granted.
