“Greetings, young souls. I am Nazo Abrahams, a High Scholar of the Society of Learning, a Natural, and your first-year History teacher, good to officially meet you all,” the History teacher introduced herself; her golden eyes moving over the many youthful faces that stared back at her.
She clapped her hands. “That’s it for my introduction. As for yours…there’s no need. I’ve already memorised all your information from your CATs…and speaking of those, you lot did exceptionally well,” she said, her admiration-laden gaze honing in on several faces. “This batch of students are in a league above any in recent…or distant memories. Several long-standing records were even shattered. Needless to say, my colleagues and I are very impressed, congratulations.”
The praiseworthy words caused the students’ faces to beam, with many believing themselves to be among the ‘record breakers’. The reason for this misunderstanding came from the fact that CAT results weren’t public information. Each student was given their final report card, listing their final score and corresponding credits earned, that was it.
“Okay,” the History teacher clapped her hands again, regaining the room’s full attention, “let’s move on to the reason we’re all here, history.” Nazo’s lips curled up at the subject’s mention and a passionate light was lit in her studious gaze.
With another clap, telepathic links were sent out to all students. Once connected, Nazo began her enthusiastic lecture.
Ralf was very impressed by the setup.
It was neat and organised while also feeling very magical. Telepathic powers were used extensively throughout the lecture, to create hologram-like illusions as well as to project images and videos into the students’ minds, to go along with Nazo’s talking points.
Still, while impressed with the setup and Nazo’s excellent teaching skills, which was the perfect fusion of knowledge and passion, the Transmigrator quickly grew bored.
The lecture’s focus was the fabled Ancient Era.
Nazo had said she planned to go in chronological order and she did just that, taking the class back to the very beginning.
The Dark Era was defined as everything before the Divine Year, which was around ten thousand years ago. The masses considered the Dark Era as the beginning, but most scholars saw the Ancient Era as the true beginning of humanity’s history.
The Ancient Era’s starting date was uncertain, but its end date was not. The era’s end was thought to be around fifteen thousand years ago, five thousand years before the Divine Year was said to happen.
Where the Dark Era was a bleak tale of humanity’s suffering and endless struggle for survival, the Ancient Era told a different story. According to archaeological evidence, the Ancient Era was one where humanity greatly prospered.
Five great civilizations each housing millions of humans were known to have certainly existed during this time. These five places and more harboured hundreds of languages, cultures, religions and ethnicities. Atlas, Thor, Odin, Jesus, Zeus, Neptune; the Old Gods and the Dead Religions of today were once thriving and widespread. Structures like the Western Region’s Great Pyramids and the Eastern Region’s Heavenly Obelisk were constructed during this time as well.
Most noteworthy, humanity wasn’t confined to the northern half of the world as it was in modern times. Ruins and tablets showed that humanity had once made northern Resia its home, with one of the five great civilisations being based in the northeast.
News of this discovery had driven the anti-demon warmongers insane with frenzy, and a big campaign to retake humanity’s rightful land back was initiated. It went nowhere, but still, the fact remained; before aresians claimed northern Resia, it was in humanity’s hands.
Humanity dominated the planet and was on the up and up.
So, what changed it all?
The arrival of monsters, of course.
Monsters weren’t native to Earth; pretty much all scholars agreed on this point. How monsters arrived was a question without a clear answer. The most reasonable explanation was that they arrived the same way starstones did, by meteorites.
Some suggested space fairing vessels of sorts, but no such vessels were ever found around the planet. Their arrival was a complete mystery. Unknown magic or technology was a strong possibility in the minds of scholars.
Regardless, monsters had somehow arrived. Their numbers were uncertain but their effect was clear. The beacon of light that was the Ancient Era was snuffed out and replaced by a five thousand-year-long darkness. During this time, most of humanity and its diversity would be destroyed.
What about aresians?
Interestingly, some scholars believed that aresians weren’t native to Earth as well and that they had invaded the planet at the same time monsters did. It would explain why humans could step foot onto Resian soil without resistance back then. Still, this was just a theory theory; there was no hard evidence supporting the idea.
The Ancient Era.

The topic was super interesting…but it was also one Ralf had read up to death about, and so far, Nazo hadn’t mentioned anything new. Even the images of the ancient ruins were things he had seen before.
Fighting the urge to sigh, he conjured a Psi Controller and began playing games with Ray. Not wanting to disturb, he stayed silent and even wrapped a soundproof barrier around the device to prevent the tapping sound from escaping.
This was of course, pointless.
Ralf’s fiddling immediately drew attention. Lane looked at him, first in envy, then in confusion, noting no Psi games present. Charlotte, Violet and Skye, who all had been informed about the controller, too, had their attention seized by Ralf’s actions. And with most of the class partially focused on the trio, the room’s attention quickly shifted to Ralf.
Finally, Nazo’s attention landed on him.
Instead of anger, she showed curiosity like any true scholar would when encountering the unknown. She approached, her eyes locked onto the contraption.
“Mister Fawkes, what is that strange device in your hands? Another toy?”
“Of course not,” Ralf denied at once. “This device helps me better focus and retain information, so please ignore my playing with it from now on.”
‘Better focus and retain information…what’s better than perfect though?’ She questioned internally, having seen Ralf’s flawless scores.
Nazo didn’t press the issue. Ralf’s CAT scores earned him more than enough points in her heart to ignore the oddity; it would be different if he was deliberately disturbing her lesson though.
“Hmm, I see, then I’ll overlook it. I’m curious though, those symbols and that strange shape…can I have a closer look?”
“Sure,” Ralf said, floating the Psi Controller over to his teacher’s front. While she fiddled, the students directed their gazes toward the device and speculated among themselves about what it really was.
[That’s for Psi games?] Charlotte asked after she sent out a telepathic link.
Ralf simply nodded while showing a subtle smile, then snapped the link with a thought. Charlotte thrust out a telepathic link again but Ralf didn’t bite - or rather, he kept doing so.
Nazo concluded her inspection, memorising the Psi Controller perfectly. She pressed the buttons as she saw Ralf doing but besides a light vibration, nothing substantial happened. She returned the device to him, thanked him and then headed back to her podium and resumed the lesson.
Ralf resumed his gaming as well. The previous attention continued to linger on him, though only for a few minutes. After that, most returned their attention to the lesson, yes most.
Yuki, who wasn’t interested in the lesson since the start, practically bore into his temple with her curious gaze. Charlotte was more of the same, while Lane, Skye and Violet were more subtle but still obviously curious. Ralf gave them no answers, fiddling with their hearts as he did his controller, frenetically.
The hour-long lecture passed slowly for the group, but eventually, it reached an end.
“We’ve reached the end of the lesson, sadly. However, before I send you off, I have two important announcements to impart,” Nazo revealed, gripping the attention of the students, Ralf included.
“The first is about a test. Next Monday, there’ll be a comprehensive test, testing your basic History knowledge. These are the topics…” Saying this, a slide show listing various events and time periods was projected into the students’ minds. “No need to copy them down, they’re in your Student Guidebooks. If you have further questions, ask your PA.”
Nazo joined her hands as her gaze swept over the students.
“The Hunter Academy doesn’t have a knowledge component to its admission process, resulting in students entering the Academy with varying levels of knowledge. This wouldn’t be bad if not for the fact that a large portion of students come possessing knowledge well below the bare minimum and some - way too many - arrive with outright false knowledge. The comprehensive test will allow us to pinpoint where you stand, knowledge-wise and correct where needed. History is your first such comprehensive test. Expect the other subjects to do the same. Importantly, you can earn a lot of credits by doing well, so use this week to study hard and smart.”
The History teacher showed a look of approval as she noted the students’ faces; they were eager to learn - or rather, eager to distinguish themselves. Regardless, they would be trying to do well, and that was enough to bring a satisfied smile to her face.
“Now, on to the second announcement. It’s another opportunity to earn a lot of credits. Life at the Academy is unpredictable. Things can happen at the drop of a hat…and today is an example of that. The first event, Paintball Royal will be starting soon.”
