“Decline?”
Uttering, Tucker’s manner shifted from ‘friendly’ to harsh and frigid in the blink of an eye.
His eyes narrowed. “Decline, you say. That’s…most unfortunate.” Saying this, he tapped the desk with his finger.
Understanding his boss’ signal, Charlie obliged. His Rank 5 Psi rushed towards Ralf; it settled above him for a moment before descending with a merciless might.
Bam!
As though gravity was increased severalfold, Ralf dropped to the fall, slamming face-first into the hardwood. Charlie didn’t let up, increasing the power of his telekinesis, he bore down harshly.
A pleased light swirled in Boss Desmond’s eyes as he took in Ralf’s predicament.
He didn’t rush to address it. As if it weren’t a thing, he shut his eyes and blew a few puffs. Five seconds passed of this before he opened a drawer and retrieved a revolver. Swivelling his chair, he got up and circled to the front of the desk. Moving with slow steps, he arrived before the pancaked Ralf.
“In life, there are times where one will have to make important decisions. The right choice leads to heaven, while the wrong one…hell. Ralf, today, you made the wrong choice.”
Tucker flipped open the barrel. Finding all six slots filled, he gave it a spin, before flipping it back in place.
[Charlie, let up on the telekinesis. Cage him.]
Charlie nodded, then delving into his Conceptual Memory and selecting the construct, a Psi cage rushed to materialize around Ralf. Fully formed, Charlie ceased his telekinetic press.
Even free from the force, Ralf didn’t move to get up. Seconds passed by with him laying sprawled on the floor.
Tucker watched his inaction with great disdain. ‘This is the person Jeremy was so scared shitless of…ridiculous. Gambling huh, sure enough, he has a good poker face. But when the chips are down, he folds, just like any other.’
Looking down, he noticed that Ralf’s entire body was trembling. While Ralf’s expression was hidden from his view, Tucker imagined one painted with fear.
‘No movement to dodge, and not even an iota of Psi released, he’s more cowardly than your average person. This will be easy.’
“Ralf, any last words?”
Saying this, he pointed the gun at Ralf’s head and pulled back the hammer.
“30 gold.”
Ralf’s utterance momentary blanked the two gangster’s minds. Taking a second to recover, Tucker smirked. ‘Way too easy.’ he shifted the gun barrel away from Ralf.
“30 gold, what exactly?”
“A deal, just like last time. In thirty days, I’ll deliver you 30 gold,” Ralf slowly got up. “I want no trouble with the Red Star. Please, Boss Desmond.”
The bowed head, the frailty in his voice and posture; these things only strengthened the image of Ralf in Tucker’s mind. ‘A cold flame, I heard it existed…now I get to see it first-hand.’ He shook his head at the thought then returned to his seat.
Putting the gun away, he reclined back and closed his eyes. “30 gold, that’s quite a sum. How will go about obtaining it?”
“Gambling, adventuring, I have a few ways. I’m confident in my ability to earn money. I have several unique talents and my luck is good.”
Tucker squinted. ‘Really appealing hard, aren’t you.’
“So, I should trust you to pay the sum.”
Ralf nodded, then moved his eyes to the four gold coins on the table. “You’ve seen it for yourself already. I can earn money quickly, and keep my end of the deal. This will be the same. And to show my intention, just as I did last time, I’ll pay an advance.”
“An advance?”
“There’s seven gold at the Adventurer Association branch. After we’re done here, have one or more of subordinates accompany to there. I’ll need at least 2 gold for adventure equipment and other things, so I’ll just hand over five gold, which they’ll deliver back to you. ”
Hearing his words, Tucker’s eyes shone with delight, before dimming at a thought. ‘A trap? Could be? I can’t just send anybody then.’

“Knowing your place in this world is important, Ralf, I can see you understand this well enough. Very well, I’ll accept the deal you’ve proposed. Once it’s complete, that’ll be the end, the true end, and you and your mother will never be bothered again.”
Ralf bowed. “Thank you, Boss Desmond.”
“Good good, now follow through with your words.” Tucker waved his hand and the cage around Ralf dissipated into Psi particles. ‘Nothing huh, he knows better.’
“Head down, Drake, the person who led you up, and his group will accompany you to the branch.”
Ralf nodded, then taking a last glance at Charlie, moved to the exit. The door opened and shut. As soon as he arrived on the other side, the feebleness in Ralf’s expression vanished. A small flame began burning in his gaze. But it was short-lived. With a blink and thought, it was forcefully snuffed out.
Ralf knew he was walking on thin ice. Allowing himself to get heated here would only lead to his downfall. The rising anger and indignation were all forcefully suppressed
He had regretted how useless he’d been yesterday, letting his emotions overwhelm him and putting Rei and his mother in danger. He wouldn’t make the same mistake again. And so, rubbing his hand over his face, he re-donned the ‘shaken youth’ mask and continued downward.
Next, Ralf, Drake and two others boarded a Red Star carriage and headed to Ganurg to complete the transaction.
“There, five gold as promised.”
Outside the Adventurer Association branch, Ralf said after handing over the gold coins.
Drake’s gaze swept over the coins. Slivers of desire could be seen flickering in his eyes.
Seeing this, Ralf added, “Make sure it gets to Boss Desmond.”
“Tsk, of course.”
While irritated at Ralf’s words, Drake had no thoughts of taking the money for himself. The sounds of Turner’s pained cries were still fresh in his mind. He dared not, and certainly not for just five gold.
Pocketing it, he turned around. “Let’s go, Boss Desmond is waiting for us.”
His fellow gangsters nodded, and the trio moved to the carriage, a short distance away.
Taking a couple of steps, Drake noticed that Ralf wasn’t following them and stopped. Glancing back, he asked, “You have another way home?”
“This is my new home. I’ll be working as an Adventurer, so I’ll be staying in Ganurg for a while.”
Drake squinted, but after a few seconds, let it go. ‘We’ve got the gold, that’s all that matters. Staying here for too long will invite trouble. I don’t want to run into those blue bastards or rabid dogs.’ With such concerns, he rushed to leave.
Soon, they were out of sight. Still, Ralf’s gaze remained fixed in the direction they left in. Only thirty seconds later would he exit from this statuesque state.
[[Ralf...good job.]]
Thawed out by these words, Ralf’s lips curled up.
[[Thank you, Rei.]]
The maelstrom of dark emotions ravaging him internally was blown back at his other self’s intervention.
Free, he took a breath and entered a brisk stride. The dark emotions returned, but Ralf didn’t allow himself to get bogged down. He had a goal to achieve, and no time to brood.
[[We have to get stronger.]]
[[We will.]]
The desire to get stronger burned brightly in not only Ralf but Rei as well.
The fury and indignation in his heart were no less than Ralf’s A slap to Ralf’s face was a slap - no more like ten slaps to his face. He wouldn’t allow today’s events to go unanswered.
Without it needing to be stated, the mission was clear in the duo’s minds, the complete destruction of the Red Star.
