Several small individuals in a group were seen flocking and roaming around the almost frozen pond in the middle of the dark forest. They had greenish skin and were as tall as a small child, while each one of them was carrying a small club made of wood. Their yellowish slit eyes were glancing all around, and all those facts clearly proved they were somewhat humanoid and possessed a certain degree of intelligence.

So those are goblins, huh? They don’t look that harmful. But I wonder what this uneasy feeling is

Morgan, who was hiding behind a giant tree not far from the pond, observed those little monsters’ movements and behavior. Thanks to her Stealth skill, those creatures that were supposed to be sensitive to smell didn’t really know her whereabouts. They just restlessly glanced around cluelessly. Unconsciously, Morgan started to salivate and found it really strange.

I know I’ve become somewhat heartless since the time I came to this world, but not to this extent… Nah, it won’t matter anyway.

She shut her eyelids tight and took deep breaths. She knew that it was impossible for her to face the entire group by herself, and was aware that pure violence wouldn’t achieve anywhere near her true goal, ‘swallowing’ everything that appeared in her way.

“What do I do? Should I distract and bait some of them?”

Morgan pondered for a moment and discarded her unnecessary worry. Yes, she did let her guard down, in contrast to her usual self.

“According to Irina, even a normal person can kill them quite easily. Maybe it’s time to try using magic that this world’s residents are so proud of.”

Morgan entered a state of deep concentration. She didn’t know about that at all and just followed what her innate instincts told her to.

Firstly, I need to recall the chemical reaction on how fire is formed. Was it oxidation? I remember studying about that when I was asked to make a molotov. The components should be fuel, heat sources, and oxygen.

Inside her head, Morgan was thinking so hard on how to even summon a small fireball. Her knowledge was quite limited compared to how it should be. She completely forgot that she was in a world where Earthly common sense didn’t work at all.

Ugh… Now I know why I should get a proper education. Damn it!

Frustrated as she should be, Morgan scratched her head profusely. And again, she was completely forgetting where she was at, and what kind of enemies she would be facing later on. Her concentration was suddenly broken by a shrill shriek from one of the preys she had laid her eyes upon.

“Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieek!!”

“Huh!?”

Once she regained her senses, the entire group was already running in her direction. She panicked and started to run away from that place, while being chased by the goblins that didn’t seem to be bothered by the cold at all. What she was feeling was fear, but she kept trying to deny it unconsciously.

“W-Why are they chasing me!? Did they spot me when I was scratching my head?”

Morgan turned her head and looked behind. There, the greenish little creatures were showing off their jagged teeth and seeing those turned Morgan’s face pale. Her fear got the better of her, and she understood that clearly. But she was taken over by that and lost all of her reasoning.

This is bad! This is bad! What should I do!?

Running was all she could think of. And she realized her stamina wasn’t that great. It was proven after she ran for about 200 meters and was already panting like crazy.

Damn it!

The moment she caught her breaths, she found herself being surrounded by the group of goblins. Slowly, and little by little, the small creatures were getting closer, while slamming their clubs to the ground. They were seemingly trying to make Morgan surrender without making any trouble by intimidating her with their sheer numbers.

“Stay away!”

Morgan screamed on top of her lungs while making hostile gazes around. The goblins flinched and looked at each other, before continuing to get closer. One of them couldn’t hold any longer and leaped at Morgan while swinging its wooden club. Seeing that, almost immediately, Morgan raised her arms to block the hit and readied herself for the impact.

“Tsk!”

Just at the moment the club made direct contact with her skin, Morgan felt something was off. She didn’t feel the pain nor the force the impact made on her, as if the time just stopped for a brief moment. Even the one goblin that was jumping to her was floating in the air, menacingly.

“What happened?”

She couldn’t help but question. No matter how illogical that world was, Morgan knew that something like that should never happen. She looked at her own body and tried to move her arms.

“Huh?”

Her arms were moving just fine. She then tried to move her whole body and walked, and it was successful. Astonished, she extended her hand to touch the floating goblin that was now right in front of her.

It’s hard… Do I possess this kind of power?

She felt a little bit excited, but deep down inside, she knew she wasn’t the cause of that happening. If the time flow stopped, she wouldn't be able to move her body at all, at least that was what she was thinking. But the fact that she still could move around gradually sent chills down her spine.

Wait, can I actually beat them this way?

She tried to divert her fear. Morgan clenched her fists and started to punch the floating goblin. But the result wasn’t exactly in the way she wanted. She could feel the contact, but no matter how hard she mustered her power, her punch didn’t seem to hurt it at all. She felt like she was punching a stationary object that was hard and soft at the same time. A really strange feeling.

Seriously, what is this?

Morgan walked away from that place in hope that she only experienced that strange event only in that area. But the truth was in the way it hurt. No matter where she went, the time just stopped, rendering every organism she could spot in her eyes moveless. After around 40 minutes of walking, Morgan arrived at the city gate, and what she found there was the standing still city guards. One of them was yawning, another one was reading a small note, while the others were talking to each other. And all of them were frozen in time.

She then entered the gate and found that the city port that was supposed to be bustling with people was completely frozen. Morgan entered the abandoned hangar she was staying at and sat on one of the wooden boxes. She was alone in the dark. No sound, no salty or rusty smell, not even a single living organism was moving. It was her and her only.

For real, what is this?

Asking the same question over and over again was the only thing she could do at that time. Slowly, the fear that she was trying to divert started to resurface. Somehow it reminded her of the absolute presence of her ‘parental beings’. Just by the time that certain memory flashed up in her mind, a young female voice was heard, deeply inside her head.

[Aaaaa… Aaaaa… Hello? Can you hear me?]

“...!?”

Morgan jolted in surprise and made a stance. She turned her head around and spotted only moveless things.

[Ah, no need to stay on guard, Morgan. No matter where you’re looking, you can’t see me. Hahaha.]

“Who are you?”

[You… are quite the funny one.]

Suddenly, the world turned monochrome. As shocked as she could be, Morgan blinked her eyes several times and rubbed them profusely. She was in total disbelief of what she was seeing through her eyes. Everything went black, gray, and white. Even the wooden box she was sitting on turned its color to bright gray.

[You’re asking who I am, right?]

While still being induced in unknown fear and predicament, Morgan only nodded her head. Her mind was blank and she could no longer maintain her reasoning. She was on the verge of screaming but decided to hold it since that would only worsen her already worst situation.

[Rejoice, Morgan! I’m ქტილა, the rightful owner of that body!]

“Huh? What did you say?”

The name that the voice uttered was jumbled in Morgan’s head, in contrast to its unusual way of speaking that Morgan could clearly understand.

[Ah, sorry, sorry! I accidentally used the Xothian language because this is the first time someone asks for my name! Wait a moment… ქტილა… Cthილა… Cthyლა… Oh, I get it! It’s Cthylla!]

The mysterious voice, Cthylla was speaking in a high tension and happy tone. It was unimaginably over-friendly and Morgan became restless as a result.

“... Cthylla?”

[Yes! The one and only Chtylla!]

Despite the fact that it had the similarity, Morgan knew it wasn’t the same voice she had used to hear before. The mysterious voice she had heard was androgyneous and robotic, while the voice she was listening to now, Cthylla, was clearly that of a young woman. It was also more energetic, and somehow, much scarier than the other one. Morgan wasn’t sure if Cthylla was an ally or an enemy she must fear.

[You see? That body was originally my vessel, but those damned parents of mine infused your soul into it and tried to claim it for themselves. It’s so unfair, don’t you think?]

What the hell is this thing talking about? Vessel? Parents?

[Wait, did they not tell you about me? It’s understandable then why you asked for my name.]

Morgan quickly shook her head frantically. Not long after, she could feel a strange and hot sensation in her stomach. Gradually, the strange feeling became stronger and it made Morgan lose her balance and fell on her knees. To make it even worse, she vomited the same black gelatinous liquid like before.

“Bleerggh! Cough…! Cough! W-What the hell were you doing to me!?”

[Ah, sorry, sorry! I was just adjusting my existence to yours. Do you feel better now?]

“Not even a little bit! Urgh… Bleeerghh!”

Morgan vomited again and over again, rendering her body limping. She felt most of her energy just forcefully being sucked by Cthylla, the unknown existence. Her eyelids grew heavy, and her sight began to go greenish, symptoms of someone who’s about to pass out.

“Ugh… I can’t… pass out here…”

Morgan was unable to hold her consciousness altogether, and just passed out on the floor.

[Achaaa… She passed out, didn’t she? Well, it doesn’t matter. Quite the contrary, this may be for the best. I wonder what kind of reaction she’ll have when she wakes up. Hihihi.]

Cthylla giggled as she began to fiddle with Morgan’s body.
