Chapter 36: The Start

In the throne room,

The king sat on his throne while he spoke with the dean about the upcoming dungeon competition for the first years.

He said, "Has the dungeon been decided for the competition?"

The dean answered, "Yes, the dungeon has been decided and it will test the limits of patience and willpower in the students."

"Hmm... Patience and willpower are important for the soldiers on the battlefield."

"What about Darell and the rest?" the king asked.

The dean smiled and answered, " The progress of all of them is as expected. The hard work and training they do are twice that of the average student."

The king smiled and nodded his head in approval.

After a minute of deep thinking, he ordered, "Since the competition is testing the patience and willpower, then don't provide any clues or help whatsoever to Darell and the rest. This way they have to persevere to win the competition."

The dean was shocked and wanted to say something but he was cut off by the king.

" I know you are going to persuade me to think about it but I won't. You and I both know that some have already got news of the dungeon. They are going to cheat but they won't have the patience to complete so they will quit.

Only in times of adversity, one would gain the most benefits.

Also, put rank 04 best cores as the rewards for the top 05 to increase the competition. "

The next day,

At the assembly hall,

" Hey! Do you know which dungeon has been chosen? "

" No! I am super frustrated because I haven't been able to properly buy enough equipments and potions for this test."

"Enough about that! Did you hear? Adam asked Zara out on a date."

"WHAT?! That BASTARD!! He told me he had no interest in her."

All the students were present in the assembly hall and they were talking among themselves.

"SHUT UP ALL OF YOU!!"

Walter's thunderous roar instantly quieted down the students. He coughed a bit on the platform.

"Good morning everyone!

I know most of you already know n about why we have gathered here. So, I will get straight to the point.

Every year in this academy, a competition is held for the first years. This competition test what you have learned and trained. A different dungeon is chosen every year to prevent any kind of cheating. The dungeon's terrain changes every year so, the students don't know what to expect.

This kind of unexpected terrain is what all of you should expect during a battle. You never know so, you have to always be prepared.

All of you should follow all the rules written on the given tablet. If any of you are found breaking any of the rules then you will be expelled and all your family members won't be allowed to join the academy for 3 years."

A stone tablet was given to the students upon which several rules were inscribed.

Some students started murmuring about the harsh rules placed upon them.

Walter mocked them," If any of you think that the rules are harsh, then you should check the rules placed on the competitions for the second and the third years."

When everyone quieted down, he continued, "These rules are placed for your benefit. If you can't perform to these lax rules then you don't have any right to study in this academy.

Read all of the rules carefully and try your best to follow them.

Now, some of you must have thought that since you are going to a dungeon then, to get rank 01 you have to conquer it, right? "

Most of the students simply nodded.

Walter looked at them with a disdainful gaze and said," All of you are idiots! Most of you will die trying to conquer the dungeon.

To win this competition, all you need to do is to collect as many beast cores as you can. Pretty simple, right?

You will obtain points according to the amount of the beast cores you have collected. "

Beast cores are basically the collection of all the mana concentrated at one point of their body from which they use mana to empower themselves.

Humans have no beast cores. This extremely crucial factor differentiates them. If an animal has a beast core when they are born then, they are termed as a monster.

Some humans have mana-empowered bodies from birth while some don't.

Walter said, " This competition will take place for a month. So, please make sure you have the necessary equipments, potions, food, etc for the competition.

Now, listen carefully because I am going to announce the rewards because of the competition.

Rank 01 - 5 rank 04 cores and 100,000 academy points

Rank 02 - 4 rank 04 cores and 85,000 academy points

Rank 03 - 3 rank 04 cores and 65,000 academy points

Rank 04 - 2 rank 04 cores and 50,000 academy points

Rank 05 - 1 rank 04 core and 25,000 academy points

The top 05 will get rank 04 equipment while the rest of the top 10 will receive rank 03 cores and 10,000 academy points.

You all will be going to the dungeon tomorrow so, prepare yourselves and do your best. "

In the training hall,

Three people are fighting against monsters of different shapes and sizes.

The boy is covered in flames as his eyes are spitting fire and his hair has been converted to flames.

He dodged the fireball thrown at him by the fire falcon and leaped backward. He grips the fire sword in his hand as he noticed the fire arrows flying toward him at an imperceptible rate. He jumps on a branch of the nearby tree and uses it to launch himself in the air and above the falcon. He grips the sword and pierces it's brain as he plunges the sword into the fire falcon.

He landed on the ground while using the falcon's body to cushion the impact.

The other two people are two girls who have a similar appearance but one was using a spear while the other was duel-wielding axes.

They were fighting against golems of different elements.

The girl with the spear pierces the head of the rock golem and kicks the body backward while dodging the sneak attack of the fire golem. The other girl throws one axe at a rock golem while she uses the other axe to cut the head off a lightning golem.

Their battle went on for several minutes after which they emerged as the victor.

" Alfith! Alfen!"
