CHAPTER 1

In a dense forest was a boy, no, a man, who was busy completing a number of exercises such as pushups with heavy rocks tied to his back or pullups with small boulder tied to his waist. As the boy exerted himself, sweat glistened off of his muscular and lean physique which stood at 6’2. After completing a number of sets of his workout circuit he made his way back home, walking through the forest path which had the mid-morning light seeping through the thick collection of trees caused him to enter a slightly melancholic mood as he realized how his life would soon be changing for better or for worse.

Whilst following the path back for potentially the last time Alex continued to circulate mana through his body, strengthening his body which had yet to go through the trials of the tower and gain any skills. After exhausting his mana supply which he had been training for five years now, he found himself out front of his home for the past 18 years, a place where he had made memories and spent pleasant time with his family.

Entering the house after quickly washing himself off with a light rinse of cold water to wake him up, he entered the house to find streamers and decorations set up along with letters string up to spell out ‘Happy 18th Birthday’.

“””” Happy Birthday”””” Came the voices of the four girls which he saw as a mix between a mother and an older sister. Walking fully into the house he saw the smiling faces of Emily, Celia, Abby, and Sarah all lined up next to each other whilst holding their own individual presents. As his eyes were instantly attracted to the four packages, he saw the shotty wrapping skills that he had come to expect from Celia, whilst Sarah didn’t even bother and just chucked her present in a large bag, and Abby and Emily upheld the groups dignity by wrapping their gifts with a cute ribbon on top.

As the group continued to congratulate Alex on reaching the age which the empire considered him a man, they eventually sat him down and lined up behind each other.

“Alright we’ve each gotten you a little something but as you know we’re saving the big gift for the end.” After Emily’s explanation she handed him the gift she held which was revealed to be a singular ring inside an unnecessarily fancy looking box.

“Ooh lucky Alex, just turned 18 and already being proposed to” Came the voice of Celia behind Emily as she snickered to herself.

“Yes, yes laugh all you want honey. Alex that’s a [Tier 2] Ring of Protection, it’ll conjure up a shield to protect you from minor damage once a day as long as you have the mana for it.” Explained Emily as she watched Alex slip the ring onto his finger, in response the ring lit up in recognition of its new owner’s mana system.

[Equipment Acquired]

[Ring of Protection] [Tier 2]

  • Ever wanted to not die when an attacks about to hit you? Well congratulations, now you get one extra shot at life!
  • Conjures a kinetic shield of energy to prevent minor damage once every 24 hours using the owner’s mana.

After the glow died down Alex dismissed the notification which had popped up before him signaling that he had successfully equipped his first piece of equipment. Although he had tried on random jewelry such as rings as a kid, this was his first time owning a Dungeon-manifested item which caused the screen to pop-up.

“Thanks Em, I really appreciate it.” Said Alex as he stood up to hug the mother figure of the group.

“Yeah, move it along, don’t got all day here after all.” Exclaimed Celia from behind again as she struggled to keep still, very unbefitting for the main hunter of the group.

“Alright you might have gotten a little taller but you’re still a brat so don’t get too cocky.” Although Celia’s words never sounded the friendliest, her gift revealed to be a set of leather armor which Alex quickly inspected.

[Kobold Leather] [Tier 1]

  • Go fight a kobold when wearing this for a funny reaction
  • Armor provides slight protection against cuts and small environmental resistances.

Knowing that even the lowliest [Tier 1] armor would bite into the retired party’s savings, Alex repeated the previous action and brought Celia into a tight hug whilst thanking her for her gift.

Next up was Sarah who approached with a suspiciously large looking bag.

“Happy Birthday Alex, thought you might be able to finally use those muscles to use once you enter the dungeon with this bad boy.” Showing a mischievous smirk, Sarah gleefully watched Alex pull a large object out of the bag which was revealed to be what looked like a simple club.

Alex yet again inspected the item to reveal it’s status.

[Strong Club] [Tier 1]

  • You see bad guy, you hit bad guy, simple, yes?
  • Deals slight amounts of extra blunt damage on every hit

Reading the description and finding it slightly entertaining, Alex gave Sarah a quick hug and thanked her for her gift before settling down again to reveal Abby with the last individual present.

“Since you haven’t even entered the dungeon yet we thought it’d be bad to get you too many tiered items lest you get too over reliant on your gear, and last but not least, here. Oh, and look inside it too.” After dropping a small sermon that Alex had heard numerous times before Alex unwrapped the gift to reveal a simple looking leather bag which he could chuck on his back.

Following Abby’s instructions, he opened the bag to see another status screen pop up showing the contents of the bag. With his attention split between the realization of what the gift was and what was in the bag, he brought his hand out to see a small symbol of the moon.

“It’s a plaque of the Lunarian royal family, I may have left the palace but that should still be good if you every have any issues” Smiling at Alex who held a happy expression on his face, she explained the gift and its use.

Finished with the gifts, Alex chucked his new armor and club into the bag and inspected the bag itself during the process.

[Bag of Minor Holding] [Tier 1]

  • It’s a bag, holds stuff.
  • Can fit any object that fit within a 3x3m cube
  • Holds six Item slots, similar items are stackable

Hugging Abby and thanking her for her extremely generous gift, Alex sat back down and waited for Emily to come back from the girls’ room with the final gift which was the reason for Alex’s slightly somber mood.

“Alex as you know the Royal Academy is now open for you that you’ve become of age, and now that we’ve each given you some gifts to help you during your stay the final gift is this.”

Handing Alex, a pouch that made a metallic clinking sound, the girls watched Alex’s sad smile as he received the pouch of golden coins.

“That should be enough for your trip to the Capital as well as living expenses for your first semester of study, after that living expenses are up to you. We don’t want to coddle you too much as we know you have what it takes to become a top-level climber.” Talking to him in a gentle and soothing voice Emily couldn’t had back a silent tear as she realized that the boy, she, and the other girls had raised would finally be leaving home.

Bringing him into one final hug, Emily tightly held onto Alex which then caused the others to also hug them creating one last bittersweet memory before Alex would start his weeklong journey to the capital.

Surrounded by the beautiful women that he was proud to call his family, he etched their faces into his mind as he looked at each one of the.

Emily the gentle mother figure who couldn’t hold back a small number of tears whilst showing a sad but sweet smile.

Celia whose face had turned red in embarrassment as she couldn’t hold back her sobs.

Sarah who still held a stoic face, yet her eyes revealed a gentle affection for the boy she had helped raise.

And lastly Abby the usually lazy swordsman who held a sad smile on her face as she said farewell for now.

Leaving the group of emotional Women, Alex grabbed his pre-prepared luggage containing some clothes and basic necessities. Walking outside the front door he saw a carriage with a driver waiting for him who he waved to and handed a singular gold coin for his long journey to the capital.

Setting himself up against the merchandise which the driver had already set up Alex slowly sat down and watched as his only family walked out of the house to wave goodbye.

Waving back, Alex watched as the group slowly became smaller and smaller until they were no longer visible and then he closed his eyes trying to focus his thoughts on the future.

For now, his journey had finally come to a start.
