Chapter 1

I never imagined there could be anything worse than the war that plagued our ancestors every day. We fought to escape oppression and beyond Earth. I felt safe, but back then, I had no idea what was really in store.

This morning, we walked into a very different landscape. There were plants and trees that we knew and others that seemed alien. We followed the path first, then turned around and came to an opening. We didn't dare to go beyond it, not even knowing what awaited us, but we entered. I kept my eyes glued to the ground and I didn't hear the conversations around me.

At one end of the shallow, half-covered open space, I saw a blurry shape morph into a human. Jogging his way to us, he said in a deep voice, "I haven't seen these plants for a few decades and scrutinizing the roots could tell us the age."

His hands quickly delved into a clump and brushed away soil, leaving it on the ground. Everyone seemed excited as they recognized the plants too. When they were happy, they tended to chatter and chat. A couple of indistinguishable guesses were made and then, suddenly, everyone became silent.

The mouth of one of the plants opened and a red liquid poured out. It didn't look like blood and it wasn't emitting a smell, but the man's anxious expression belied the fact that he was about to get sprayed with something.

The liquid came forth quickly and hit the man on his back in a stream. He raised his arms to protect himself from the spray, but the liquid flowed over him and into the ground. People screamed as the liquid hit their faces. The man tried to say something, but his voice was drowned by the screams. He ran to the waterfall and dived in.

I couldn't understand what had happened. I saw the plants open their mouths and then close them again. Nothing had happened to us. I found out later that they were carnivorous plants. They had mistaken the man's skin for animal meat.

Some of the group ran to the plant and started to fight it. People were trying to pull it out of the ground and some were running towards the waterfall. I didn't know what was happening at first, but I followed the crowd. A man fell into the pool of water and a woman tried to save him. She didn't know how to swim and they both fell back onto the ground.

I ran towards them, but before I could reach them, I heard a noise and turned around. I saw a man running towards me with a huge chunk of flesh in his hand. His eyes were wide and he seemed to be in pain. Before I could react, he threw the chunk of flesh at my face. I felt sharp pains all over my body. My legs went numb and I fell to the ground. Everything went dark.

I woke up in a dark room. A few lights were on and I could see the silhouette of someone walking away. I stood up and looked around. The walls were made of stone and there were no windows in the place. The door was a piece of wood with a square peephole. There was a chair and a table in the room. I leaned on the table and looked at the door. I wondered if I would ever leave this place.

"Where am I?"

The man who had rescued me walked towards me and answered, "You're in a laboratory."

"A laboratory? What for?"

"We don't know. Some of the experiments have been successful, but others have failed. We have to find out why before we can move forward."

"I don't know what will happen to me. What if they turn me into one of them?"

He didn't answer and walked towards the door. I followed him and we entered a corridor. The walls were white and there was a staircase at the end of the corridor. The man walked up the stairs and disappeared. I went to the top of the stairs and looked around. There was no one around. I looked down and saw a small door at the bottom of the stairs. I tried to open it, but it was locked. I knocked on the door and put my ear against it. I heard something, but I couldn't understand what it was saying. I started to cry and I pulled at the door.

A man walked towards the door and opened it. He looked at me and said, "What are you doing here? This is a restricted area."

"I don't know. I'm trying to get out of here."

"This is a scientific laboratory and you weren't allowed in here. I'm going to have to call someone."

He walked away from the door and I heard him talking on the phone. A few minutes later, he returned to the door and opened it. He looked at me again and told me to leave. I walked back down the stairs and towards the door. As I walked away, I heard a voice behind me say, "It's all right. Come in."

I walked into a long corridor and saw a man sitting on a chair. There was another man standing in front of the doorway. I walked towards him and asked, "Who are you?"

The man stood up and told me to sit down. He walked towards me and sat down next to me.

"My name is David. I'm the leader of this group." He looked at me and then asked, "Why did you try to escape?"

"I don't know why I did it. The plants scared me."

"You were right to be scared. The plants were dangerous. They were carnivorous and they could kill people."

"I'm sorry that happened."

"Don't worry about it. It was just a mistake. You're not going to be turned into one of us."

"I want to leave. I don't want to stay here."

"Don't worry. I'm going to help you get out of here."

"But it's too dangerous."

"I know, but you have to do it anyway."

"How are we going to do it?"

"I'm going to help you escape."

"What about the other people?"

"I don't know about them. We're all alone here. We're the only ones left. If you don't escape, they'll all die."

"So, the way it works is like this. One person tries to escape, and if they succeed, there's a good chance that the rest of us can escape."

"That's right. But first, we have to find a way out of here."

"There's a staircase at the end of the corridor. We should go down to the bottom."

He got up and walked towards the door. I followed him and we went out of the door. We walked down the stairs and into another corridor. We walked down the corridor until we came to a door. David opened the door and we walked through. The corridor was dark and I couldn't see anything. David tried to turn on a light, but he couldn't find one. He continued down the corridor and stopped near a window.

"We're here now."
