Vol. 1 Chapter 9

09 "Sub-human’s Case."

The next day, I went to Heiria Academy with Crenna.

"Good morning, Crenna!”, “Good morning!”, “Good morning, Crenna-sama!"

"Uh, yeah. Good morning......?" Already, Crenna had gotten used to the students at the academy. I had assumed that she spent most of the day with me the day before, her first day of transfer, but probably word of her had spread around in her absence.

It seemed that the rumors were in her favour.

On the other hand-- "Hey, that dropout, is he coming today again?"

"He’s still trying to deceive that new transfer student, Crenna-sama, he knows nothing; he’s the worst."

"But he beat Lawrence in one hit, right?"

"That was just luck; it’s nothing special."

"Yeah, that's right. It was Crenna-sama's power, not the power of a dropout."

I… I got the same treatment as always.

As Crenna was being flattered by students, I continued my usual day in academy.

"Hey, Kale. Good morning."

"Hey." As I sat down at my seat, Eddy spoke to me. Usually, Laios would be there too—

"Where's Laios?"

"Oh, he's over there......" Eddy pointed to a spot down the hallway. There, Crenna was surrounded by about ten boys. The boys were touching their chests and, in a knight-like manner, kneeling with their knees on the ground. Among them was Laios.

"...... what's that?"

“Crenna's fan club. They call it the SS or the Kingsguard.”

"On the second day at the new school? Well, if she looks like that, I can understand.

If only I had met her differently, I might have seen her as an idol. When I was thinking about this, I thought that I…

"Hmm, you're not in a hurry, are you?"

"What do you mean?" I tilted my head in response to Eddie's question.

“You and Crenna are dating, aren't you? Didn't you come to school with her this morning?”  Eddie says in a teasing tone.

I sighed.

"It's for the best that we separated in front of the school. I don't want to be the one who's always making her uncomfortable."

If you're going to be her bodyguard, it would be better if you stayed close to her. But with the school, there's always the chance that something will happen when I'm around. Like the time Lawrence caused a scene. If that kind of thing keeps happening, it's going to be a hindrance to her bodyguard duties. So, we've been trying to take action to separate as much as possible at the school.

That's why I broke up with her just before we got to school today... but it seems like Eddie saw us.

"We're not together or anything. I just happened to run into her on my way out of the house."

"Really? It just looked bad because you broke up right before you got there. I knew you would get mad, but I didn’t put Crenna to be the type to get all worked up over something like that. Anyway, let's not get into it. But you should be more careful next time."

"......I'll remember that."

From now on, I’ll try separating a little earlier and go to school.

"Hey Kale, Crenna’s looks like in trouble, don’t you agree?" he pointed towards her.

“Why?”

"If you look, Even though she’s surrounded by many students, she still has those pleading eyes."

“...... I'm sure she'll be fine if we leave her alone.” I ignored her gaze and took it easy until class started.

After school. As the students left the classroom, I slowly got up. Laios and Eddie each have their club and committee. We three usually go together, but today we were all separated after school.

But I had something I needed to do too.

I was heading to the guild with Crenna, to go to my appointment.

"Mmm...." As I was walking home, Crenna was glaring at me the whole time.

"What is it?"

".... You didn't help me back in the morning"

"What are you talking about? There wasn’t anything I needed to help you with"

“But you could have at least cared a little......” Crenna pouts like a child.

I sighed. I understand where she's coming from, to an extent. But, If I act out at school, it'll just cause more trouble.

"By the way, Crenna. What's this?" I pointed to the notebook Crenna was holding close to her chest.

"Oh, this? I got it from my classmates at school. They were teaching me all about this school" Crenna opened the notebook to a page with colorful writing on it. It was hard to read the writing, but I eventually understood what it said. It was the schedule of events at the Heiria Academy.

The school has a lot of events, like the sports festival, the culture festival, and exchanges with other schools, and school trips!

"I heard that there's a lot of events at Heiria Academy!" Crenna says with a beaming smile.

It seems like Crenna is really looking forward to all the events at the school. I've never had such a positive impression of the school events, so I wasn't sure how to react.

"...It does look like fun."

"Yeah!" Crenna's face lights up with an innocent smile.

"I'm really glad I left the Vampire Domain and came to Heiria Academy. If I had stayed there, I wouldn't have been able to experience all this! It's so great to be free!" Listening to Crenna talk about how much fun she's having with such genuine enthusiasm, I couldn’t help but smile.

"Speaking of which, there's a martial arts festival coming up soon." I point to the open notebook.

"The martial arts festival? Oh, that's after the summer break, right?"

"Yeah. It's an event that the school organizes, where they compete to see who is the strongest in the kingdom. Last year, there were some people from the Imperial Guard and the top-ranking members of each guild."

"So, like, really strong people?"

"Yeah, people who are like above the clouds to normal people like me."

"Heh” Crenna nods her head in interest. Seeing her so lively like that, I asked her a question in a quiet voice.

“I hope the problem with the ...... imperial army will be resolved soon.”

"......Yes.”

"If this issue is resolved peacefully, Crenna can enjoy her student life without having to worry about anything else. Right now, You are trying to escape the military's plans by shooting down pursuers, but is there any way we can deal a blow to the military from our side as well?"

"Even though the development of special weapons is proceeding in secret, if the military is leading it, that means the country is allowing it, right?"

"No, I don't think so. I've also been investigating things like that, and it seems like the empire isn't a monolith... There are some people who claim that the racial wars haven't ended yet, and they're doing the development of special weapons on their own, in defiance of the empire."

"In that case... it's not the worst possible outcome."

"No matter how you look at it, it's reckless to fight the country. But from what I've been hearing, the enemy isn't the country, it's an organization that's sneaking around and monitoring the country."

"So, the extremists are developing weapons while sneaking around and monitoring the country. ......In that case, why don't we protest against the empire? If You are attacked by extremists, it would be in the moderates' best interests to have all the information they can get. They'll definitely do a proper investigation. ......If the empire isn't a monolith, then we should ally ourselves with the other side."

"Assuming that the empire is on our side."

The empire is, at the very least, a nation that tolerates diverse races like the Arenlia kingdom. If it were known that the empire was developing special weapons, it could potentially lead to an international issue. That wouldn't be good for the empire as a whole. If a fire were to start, it would probably be put out before it became a larger fire.

While I was thinking that, Crenna looked at me with a look of admiration.

"Kale, you're really smart."

"Huh!?"

"Well, even though you’re not the one who's getting hurt, it's still impressive that you can think so far ahead."

"......I've been hurt before. I took the job of guarding you, but I'd like to avoid anything like what happened that night as much as possible. So, I have to think ahead."

I've never been called smart before. It's not bad if I can't solve the problem, but it's meaningless if I don’t try.

"Yeah. ......But it might be difficult to carry out the plan to protest the empire that I mentioned before."

"Why?"

"Because it's already been done. But the attack didn't stop. ......The empire is probably treating my protest as the ramblings of a child."

“That's......suspicious.” Crenna is a noble in the vampire society. She's not just a child. Despite that, the empire isn't taking her seriously.

"The empire is looking for pure-blooded royals with vampire blood. If we get a group of victims together, we might be able to......"

As I suggested, Crenna shook her head.

"I think now that the Empire was targeting me from the beginning," Crenna says.

"Ever since I moved to the Vampire Domain, sometimes the Empire's soldiers would come to see me. I've been getting blood tests since I was a child."

"Blood tests?"

"Yeah.” She nodded. “They told me I had a higher "rank" than other vampires."

"Rank?"

"It's not exactly the same as status, but it's close. It's a measure of how strong an individual is, compared to other members of their race. Higher-ranked individuals tend to be born with better physical and mental abilities than others."

"I see. So, because your rank is so high, you were getting tested."

"That's right. Even though my rank is nowhere near that of the Emperor, he's still the highest-ranked vampire there is."

"The Emperor?" When I asked that, Crenna started her explanation as we walk.

"The Vampire Emperor. It's been a tradition among our kind for centuries that the person with the highest rank becomes the Emperor. I've met him once, but I immediately kneeled down when I saw him. There's just that big of a difference in our ranks."

"It sounds like the human king has a very different system."

It seems like, in the case of the sub-humans, you can tell someone's "rank" just by looking at them. No one can oppose someone with a high rank, and it's even difficult to have any opposing thoughts. So, automatically, that person becomes a king-like figure in their eyes.

“It's a pretty loose system if you think about it. But it's been this way since ancient times, so I guess it must work for them.

I don't really know what "rank" means for a sub-human, but it's probably pretty important to them, to be able to live their lives in peace.

“Anyway, back to what I was saying. I was the only one who got blood tested for the vampire clan. So, I thought maybe I was the only one they were targeting.

“There's no guarantee that they're only targeting you because you're a royal and a pureblood. If the actual purpose of the test was to develop weapons against vampires, then there are other vampires who have also undergone the test.”

“But, if that's not the case, then they might have just been doing a regular blood test. I mean, after all, they did offer to test my blood again, after I refused the first time.” Crenna confidently says.

If that's true, then--Crenna’s blood has already been in the hands of the empire multiple times.

It must feel awful for Crenna. Her own blood is being used to develop a weapon. I can't imagine what she must be thinking.

“I'm sorry I got you into this mess," said a dejected Crenna.

“Hey! I'm getting paid for it. Five gold coins per ...... day. Don't forget that, okay?" I said to lighten her mood.

Crenna smiles and nods.
