Vol. 1 Chapter 10

10. "General Guild, Tenmyou Brigade."

After leaving the school, Crenna and I went to the guild's headquarters.

"Wow, this is huge."

There are many guilds in the Arnelia Kingdom, but the Tenmei Traveling Group is large in scale and well-known among them. In particular, their headquarters are located in the capital city of Granshel, and rumor has it that their facilities are very well-equipped. They must also have lodging facilities.

I've heard about the Tenmei Traveling Group from my sister, Muir. This is the guild that Mua belongs to.

As soon as we entered, we were greeted by the clean interior. Depending on the type of guild, the front can have the atmosphere of an izakaya (a Japanese pub). An example would be an adventurer's guild. On the other hand, the Tenmei Traveling Group is a general guild, which is appropriate since it accepts members from all walks of life, such as merchants and blacksmiths.

"Kale, isn't that Muir?" Crenna points to somewhere and says.

There, hanging on the wall of the guild—

"......Muir, huh."

Muir, depicted in a painting, is smiling elegantly as if she were a young lady from a noble family. Her hand holds a sword that shines with divine light. I knew the public image people had of Muir, but this is going too far.

Muir is much more childlike.

"If your name got out there as Muir's brother, it would be a bit dangerous."

"Yeah. ......But I don't think that'll happen this time."

Crenna nodded, "that's right."

"Welcome. Are you registering as new members?"

Without waiting for a reply, she continued. "You both look like vampires. I'm just guessing, but I'm sure you are new members." She said as soon as she saw our faces. I have no idea where she's going with this, but she seems to have recognized us as newcomers at first glance.

 "Yes," I said.

"I'm sorry. It's just that...you both have such beautiful red eyes." The receptionist looked at me and Crenna’s eyes.

Before I arrived at the guild, I had been made a Genus by Crenna. The condition for joining the guild was to prove that I could control my abilities. Since I couldn't use my abilities as a human, I had to become a Genus and gain the power of a vampire.

This time, I decided to register the guild by pretending to be a vampire instead of a human. This way, I won’t be exposed as Muir's brother.

The condition for joining the guild is to prove that you can control your abilities. “Please wait a moment while we prepare the entrance exam for vampires."

Saying this, the receptionist heads to a room behind the counter. I waited for a while; I heard a shouting voice from the next counter.

"So, I'm telling you, I'm Kenhime’s brother!"

"In that case sir, You'll have to show me some proof.”

"Look at my hair! It's silver, just like hers!" The man, large and imposing, with a great sword strapped to his back, was looming over the receptionist.

The receptionist sighed, looking tired, as she responded.

"Welcome." The receptionist who was our contact came back from the back room.

"Oh, um. What is that...?"

"Oh, that's just one of the regulars. He says he's sword princess’s brother, and he's trying to register with us."

"What do you mean?" As the receptionist explained, we looked at each other, raising our eyebrows.

"Sword princess respects her brother a lot. She's been preparing various forms of assistance for when he eventually registers with the Heavenly Dawn Travelers."

"Assistance?"

"Yes. Specifically, three hundred gold pieces, a first-class S-level travel permit that allows free travel between countries, a reservation at a high-class inn for a year, an introduction letter to various merchants and adventurers, and--"

"I… I see. Enough, I understand."

"Princess Sword loves her brother very much."

“Hey, fine! Quit it with exaggerated commendation!"

I understand the situation. So that means that the contents of the support somehow leaked out to the outside. That's why somebody who's pretending to be my brother showed up, targeting that leak.

"K-Kale... Do you want my reward?"

"Yes, of course, I do." I furrow my brow in response to Crenna's trembling voice. "If this keeps up... I feel like I'll have to be forever dependent on Muir."

"Yeah, I can see that." Crenna nods, but honestly, we were just about to ask for a room and some transportation. To get those, I might have to...

"By the way, Miur's brother is described as having black hair. So, the man who showed up is an imposter." The reciptionist continued.

"I see." I nod to her words.

"Also, his eyes are said to be as black as the night sky, full of compassion. From his thin lips, a manly charm drift. His limbs are long and sleek, like a model's, without a single extra ounce of flesh. If you saw him, you would turn around no matter who you were."

Who is this person she's talking about? I'm not him. Muir has a different brother.

Next to me, Creana can't help but laugh.

I cannot introduce myself as Muir's brother here because I would be laughed at. It's visible that doing so would only invite trouble.

Nevertheless... if I think about it, it would be challenging to receive Muir's support from the beginning, even if I wanted it. The content of Muir's support, which she has so generously offered, has already been leaked to the outside. If I were to accept it, I would be targeted by criminals who only see us as an easy target because the empire’s army is chasing us. We can't afford to make more enemies than we already have.

"So, I will now explain the entrance examination." The receptionist says. She is holding glasses of water in both hands. "For the vampires, we have a water and glass examination. Please put a drop of your blood in this glass and keep it in the water for one minute."

"I see... interesting!" Crenna exclaimed with a voice that sounded like she was having fun.

So, this is how we measure a vampire's ability to some extent... Yes, it is a little interesting.

"Please begin." The receptionist instructs us. We followed her instruction and cut our fingers with the provided knife. We drip a drop of blood into our respective glasses and wait. Thirty seconds have passed. I still have plenty of time. I take a glance at Crenna, who is sitting next to me. She has a look of assurance and is smiling leisurely. Crenna is a royal vampire and pureblood. She would easily pass the entrance requirements for the guild.

"The time has elapsed. Please return the glasses." The receptionist says. We return the glasses as we're told. When we do, we notice that the blood has dissolved.

(I guess she doesn’t feel the burden of the test...but me...)

I tried thinking hard about it while looking at the glass. The blood in the water doesn't dissolve at all and floats in the center of the glass in a spherical shape. I try to maintain that shape in my head, but I don't feel any burden after a minute has passed.

"One minute has passed. Congratulations, you both passed." Crenna let out a relieved sigh and smiled at me. We both shared a smile, happy that we had both passed. Until now, I couldn't even register because of my incapacity, but I can work freely from now on. I don't have to burden Muir with this anymore.

"If both of you are okay with it, we can continue like this, but what do you want to do?"

"Continue?" I asked the receptionist's words back.

"Some people who take this test want to know their limits, so they continue until the end. For vampires, this test is also a way to prove their abilities. There are a few people who can last for almost five minutes if they're long enough, but it's rare."

"Five minutes!? That's...pretty harsh, I guess..." Crenna sounded surprised.

After thinking for a bit, I answered. "Sorry, but I have something else scheduled later."

"I understand. In that case, I'll take this glass with me." The receptionist took the glass and went to the back room.

As she left, a large man came in. "Hm? A newbie?"

"That's right."

Since he came from the other side of the counter, he was probably also affiliated with the guild. However, he didn't look like he did desk work. He had a muscular build that made him stand out, which probably meant he was a master of some sort.

"I'm Galia-Blonix. I'm the master of the guild, Tempest." Master. In other words, he was the highest-ranking member of the guild, Tempest, which was one of the most prestigious guilds in the kingdom. We were so surprised to be spoken to by someone of his stature that we just froze up. Galia-Blonix looked at us with a white mustache and observed us.

“It seems that both of them are high-class vampires. I'm glad that a promising new person has joined.” To Crenna’s surprise, she asked him "Even though you're human, you can tell their class? How is that possible?"

"It's because I'm a master. I have a lot of experience with different kinds of beings. I've even met the king of the sub-humans before." Galia laughed heartily in response.

"So, what are your names?" Receiving the question, we became tense. I couldn't use my real name. If I revealed I was Muir’s brother, it would be dangerous. If it were to be revealed that I am a human, it would be bad for Crenna, who also uses a fake name.

"I'm Nown, and she's Ann." Nown was my fake name, and Ann was Crenna’s fake name.

"Nown and Ann, huh? Two unknown names. That's pretty suspicious." Crenna also wrote her name on the paper. Both of us were using fake names. Galia was correct in his assumption.

"Well, it doesn't matter. Write your names down." He handed each of us a pen.

We both began to write on the paper. As we reported, I remembered what Muir had told him long ago.

I did as Muir told me and registered under a false name. The Tenmei Brigade tacitly accepts registration under false names.

It seems that a while back, the eldest son of a duke had registered under a false name to take advantage of the guild's resources. Still, his true identity was revealed later on, and he was allowed to stay in the guild because he was such a valuable asset. Ever since then, the guild has been accepting false names.

"Excuse me, do you have any rooms available for rent here in the guild?" After filling out the registration form, I got right down to business.

"We do have rooms, but they are only available to members of rank E or higher. Since you guys are still rank F, you can't use them." Crenna, sitting next to me and writing, looked up at Galia's answer.

"I see. So, we can't use the rooms unless we rank up. Is there any way to rank up quickly?"

"......We have a point system. Members earn points by completing requests, and when they earn a certain number of points, their rank goes up. If you want to rank up to E today, you're going to have to take on some high-point requests."

"High-point requests, huh?"

“Yeah. Naturally, the degree of difficulty of the request itself will also increase. But since you're F-ranked, you can't take on a request that difficult, though. Rank is also related to the conditions for receiving requests. In many cases, requests of great difficulty can only be received by a high-rank group member. The conditions for an E rank update are 100 points or more. In reality, after getting the points, you have to take a test and an interview, but...since you guys have "rank," you'll probably end up being a D rank or higher sooner or later. If you can get 100 points today, I'll exempt you from the test and interview with my authority.”

"Thank you very much!" After bowing deeply, Galia took the two papers to the room behind the counter. A little while later, the receptionist who had administered the first test came out, holding two cards. They were guild cards, which proved that the holder was a guild member. On the card, in the center, was the letter "F." It appeared that this was where the rank was written. Since we had become members of the Tenmei Brigade, we immediately started looking for requests.

"Do you think this request would count?" Crenna pointed to a piece of parchment hung on the bulletin board. The contents of the request were...

Destroy a goblin nest.

"I've never even fought a goblin before..."

Goblins are creatures that look like human children but have green skin. They are weak individually but can be easily defeated by beginners. However, if they are in a group, they can be a formidable opponent. We don't have the power to take them down quickly.

"So, are you two going to take this job?" A voice comes from the side. Standing there are a large man and a small boy. The large man points at the job we were looking at and asks us if we're going to take it.

"We were just about to ask if you'd let us join you. We're a little short on firepower." The man's proposal was convenient for us, so I looked at Crenna.

"What do you think, Nown-kun?"

"...... It's a good opportunity. Let's take the job." After I say that, the two of them introduce themselves.

"I'm Doros. My rank is E."

"I'm Pyxis. I'm also rank E."

Both of them have more experience than us. We introduce ourselves by our fake names and ranks. Pyxis then speaks up. "You two look like vampires. Do you know the "Bloody Arts"?"

"What the hell is the "Bloody Arts"?" Doros asks.

"Vampires can learn a unique form of combat that utilizes their racial traits. It's called the "Bloody Arts"." Pyxis explains.

We glanced at each other, and Crenna nodded her head, seeming to understand. "

It looks like both of you can use this ability."

“All right. So, with that, you two probably won't lose to the goblins in a fight. But... I've heard that "Blood Dance" isn't suited for group battles. If you take your time, you might be able to complete the request, but it might take all night.'

‘That's... troublesome.' I muttered quietly, hearing what Pyxis had to say. It's difficult to do field operations in our current situation, where the Empire is after us. I wanted to stay in populated areas like the capital at night, where more people are around.

“Doros, aside from you, I don't have any direct combat ability. If I could just have one more person...”Pyxis says.

“Sincerely,” Pyxis continued. The characteristic of the fairies is that they can accurately grasp the natural state. They can read things like temperature, humidity, air pressure, and wind speed, and from that, they can predict the weather and where plants and animals are. However, this ability is suited for survival, but not for combat.

'We're in trouble?'

At that moment, a young girl spoke to us. She had long golden hair and a black ribbon tying it back. She was tall and thin, with ears like a tiger's and a long tail.

“Aina?” We had met her before, during a school survival exercise. She was the same beastman girl who had once tried to make me her subordinate.

“Hey, it's been a while, Aina.”

'Long time no see,” Aina was one of the beastmen, who had recently become an A rank.

“So, you're Aina... the one who became an A rank recently, right?” Doris was scared, speaking timidly.

“I guess so.”

"In that case, we're saved.”

“Saved?”

‘'You two using Crenna's ability will improve your combat power. I can see that. And I, too, can use Crenna to improve my combat power. We're about the same strength.”

Aina nods indifferently. I tilt my head at her behavior.

"So, she's famous?"

"She climbed up to A rank in just one year. She's considered a promising stock. They say she's even more impressive than the former Sword Princess." Doros explains.

Aina continues to have her emotionless expression. I felt that way too when I fought her during the survival exercise, but she seems to be a compelling person.

"If you're in trouble, I can help but--" Aina offers, and I open my eyes wide.

"Really? That'd be a great help."

"We're even," Aina says. It seems like she's saying that she'll help me out next time I need it. "In that case, let's order the request. Our team is composed of these five people." Pyxis speaks, and we all noded.

Doros tears the request form from the board and heads to the counter. "We're requesting the order of the request. Our team is composed of these five people."

“It's a little too difficult for an F-rank to do. I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

"I'm sure you'll be happy with the results. ...... By the way, you were in charge of testing Noun and Ann's recruitment, right? Did you put away the glasses and water?"

"Oh! I'm sorry, I forgot! I'll put them away right away!" The receptionist rushed back to the room.

The Tenmei Brigade, despite its large size, has a small number of people working at headquarters, and as a result, trivial mistakes increase the proportion to the business. Especially lately, the number of people pretending to be Kenhime's older brother increased, which meant more unnecessary work.

A new customer appeared at the counter.

Galia went into the room himself to call back the receptionist who had gone to put away the glasses.

Inside the room, the receptionist was standing there in a daze.

"Hey, what's up?" He asked her.

"Mas... Master."

The receptionist turned around, and her face turned pale with astonishment.

"What was the record for the highest score in the ...... vampire test?"

"The record? ...Just wait a moment." Galia took out a file from the shelf next to the wall. Inside the file were documents related to the admission test for vampires. Flipping through the papers with her fingers, she eventually found the information she was looking for.

"The record is held by the current vampire king's younger brother, Gillford-T-Odilnys, with a time of seven minutes and forty-two seconds. As the king’s younger brother expected, he stands out from the other vampires...I don't think anyone could beat his record, except for his older brother, the vampire king himself."

"S-so, that's, um......" The receptionist pointed in a specific direction.

Galia noticed that the glass Kale had used for the admission test was still there, even though more than enough time had passed.

"The glass Nown used......Even though it's been more than enough time, there's still blood inside......" The reciptionists mention as Galia's eyes dilate in shock when he saw the red blood still there inside the glass.
