The agonizing cries of children erupted from behind the barred doors of the old orphanage. I could only look on in terror, as the inquisitors fueled the flames with gasoline. The gluttonous fires blazed, consuming everything in its path. No matter how much I begged them to free my children, my pleas were unanswered. I ordered them, but they no longer recognised my authority.

“Lady Kara,” a soft voice roused me from my nightmare. I nearly leapt up with a sudden jolt, only to see Josie standing at the foot of my mattress, nudging me with her dainty little hand. “Are you alright? You’re sweating pretty heavily.”

“Yes darling, I’m well.” I wiped the sweat from my forehead, and took a few deep breaths. My eyes stinging and heavy, I reached for the young woman and threw my hands over her, cradling her in my arms.

“You had the dream again didn’t you?” She hugged me back tightly, “you can’t keep blaming yourself.”

“I know dear, I know that.” I squeezed her tightly, my tears falling on her golden hair. She cuddled me for several minutes, till atlast I released her. Sniffling I sat back down, and cleared my throat. “So darling, what is it you need?”

She stood up tall, her hands on her hips, and gave me a disapproving scowl, “What happened to my client?”

“Oh, which one darling you have so many,” I said nonchalantly, hiding a smirk behind my shawl.

“You know which one I’m talking about! Ephram the factory owner. He was one of my highest paying regulars,” She stamped her foot.

“He was displeased by your absence, took it out on poor little Leah, so I had him thrown out.”

She huffed, and crossed her arms, “you could have told me, I was waiting in the Starlet room for almost an hour now.”

“I’m sorry love, it slipped my mind. Very important things have been going on as of late.”

I honestly had forgotten, so much had been happening since that day. I never expected to come across two successors on the same day, especially two who would be connected as they were. Shana MacArthur, Arela Hawks, they really didn’t understand what made them special. I would have to change that. I spent the past twenty years searching for them, though I would have never expected that they would be the ones I was looking for.

I remember when I had first ran into the MacArthur girl, at least the first time since she became a witch. The day was long and hot, and I felt quite flustered sitting on that crowded train as the workers did all they could to clear the landslide that halted our journey. Sitting there, a hot sticky mess, I remember thinking I had never wished to be able to use my magic on myself more than I did then. The other passengers flooded the aisle, despite the marshal shouting orders to stay in their seats, though I doubt they even heard him over their own incessant squabbling. Waiting there in the main passenger car would have been torture, especialy for my throbing headache, so I pushed my way through the crowd towards the dining car.

A young man blocked my path, telling me the dining car was closed for the time, though he didn’t really last more than a second after I applied my magic on him. I didn’t hurt him, I’m not cruel afterall, you can say he passed out from euphoria. It was walking into that dining car, that I saw just why it had been off limits. There she stood, side by side with her father, both with their guns drawn.

“Alright, hurry up old man, I ain’t got all day!” she barked at some magnate sitting at the bar as he emptied his pockets into the sack she shoved in front of him. Meanwhile the man with her relieved a lavishly dressed woman of her finest jewelry. As the man finished pouring his wealth into the bag, she snatched it away from him and spun around. “Thanks cheesebag, you’ve made a young girls day.” She snickered as she looked into the heavy sack of stolen goods. I’ll admit, I considered stepping in, it wouldn’t have been hard for me to stop them, but there was just something so charmingly adorable about her that I couldn’t bring myself to.

I stood and watched, chuckling as the young bandit yipped like a dog, trying her best to sound tough as she bullied the elite passengers that occupied the dining car. It wasn’t long though, before I caught her attention. “Hey, where the hell did you come from?” She moseyed up to me, her gun trained on me as she approached. “Alright, come on, empty your pockets!” She pushed the bag forward, its weight now visibly showing strain on her tiny arm.

“Careful Shana, she’s a witch too,” I heard the familiar voice of her, well, familiar, speak to her from within her carta.

“A witch huh? Can’t be a good one if you were just sitting there watching,” she smirked. Her cockiness is nothing new, honestly it’s comforting to see she is still the same little scamp from back then.

“Whatcha doin over there sweetie?” her partner called out as he came over. It was in seeing that man, that I knew who it was that was standing before me.

“So the MacArthur duo strikes again huh?” I had my hands raised as a hostage would, to humor her of course, but now that I knew who I was dealing with, I dropped the act. “Tell me, you don’t intend on robbing an old friend, do you?” I gave an innocent head tilt and pursed my lips.

He shook his head with a chuckle, and turned away. “Let her be sweetie, we don’t rob friends.” He rustled his daughters hair, “it’s about time we head out.”

“But pah?”

“Come, now, they’ll have those rocks cleared soon anyway!”

She turned to me, stuck out her tongue, and ran after her father.

“She bears the Raven familiar,” Gentle told me.

“Yes, I heard her too.” I watched with a wide smile across my face, “Setiel, your daughter is going to do you proud.” They left the train, not long before it finally got moving again. As I returned to my seat, my heart felt a bit lighter than it had before, looking forward to the day that we’d be reunited.

Josie snapped her fingers a couple times, reminding me of the conversation I’d lost track of. “You alright there?”

“Yes darling, I was just thinking about the past. Many things have been happening as of late, good things of course.”

“Like hiring in those new girls.” She smirked, “so how was your night with the Mestael woman?”

“Poor little darling passed out from a simple massage.” Though it was mostly my fault, she didn’t need to know that, though.

“Massage, sure.”

“It’s true, she only requested a massage, so it seems my nights will be quite busy from now on.” My wide smile betrayed my passe tone.

“So what about the cutie Goldie?”

“Oh I’m glad you mentioned her. She had requested the ‘Breakfast Special’, bless her heart. I do believe she doesn’t understand what she ordered.” I laughed. I had given her the same menu as any guest, though I never expected her to choose anything in that section.

“I’ll do it,” Josie volunteered, abruptly, her lewd smile all too eager.

“I thought you only took male clients? I never realised you were attracted to women.” I wasn’t opposed to the idea, though it did seem like a sudden change.

“Clients are just clients, attraction never had anything to do with it,” her lewd smile shifted to a conniving grimace, “I take the scum, so the other ladies don’t have to.”

“So then why volunteer now?”

“Don’t I deserve to have a client I actually like?” she fluttered her eyelashes and pouted her lips. Was this how she got what she wants from those old men?

“So you are fond of the girl?”

“I guess she’s my type,” she shrugged, “so do you mind if I do it?”

“By all means darling, do whatever you so desire.”

Josie beamed a bright smile, thanked me, and ran for the door, before turning back to me and asking, “so are you just giving that Shana girl your room now?”

“She did request the most luxurious room after all,” I said with a wink, “though she never said anything about having it all to herself.”

“Isn’t she like half your age?”

“Aren’t your clients three times yours?” She struck, so I struck back.

“Ouch, okay you got me there.” With an eye roll and a smirk, she left, a skip in her step.

Gentle laid beside me, and stroked my hair, “You could always stay here my lady.”

“This room does not belong to me, I merely am keeping it ready for her,” I looked upon the throne, and grew silent. It won’t be long now, I thought, until you return.
