chapter 1
It was late, the night sky had only just begun to fade away into darkness, but it was still early for him. He sat in a chair outside one of the many bars that lined this section of Zemeni's main street - not the best neighborhood, he had to admit, and certainly not where he would normally go, but he'd been called out on an emergency job by one of his colleagues at the office so it wasn't the first time.
The young man was seated on a low wall bordering a garden and watched as the few lights along the road slowly grew dimmer, then finally died, leaving the area bathed in darkness once more. The silence was almost deafening with all the noise from inside the building, music drifting out through the cracks in the windowpanes, muffled voices coming out intermittently throughout the whole place. Even the dogs seemed content in their own little world out here; if anyone asked about them, they were either asleep or lying down somewhere out of sight.
He shifted restlessly on the wooden seat, trying desperately to remain calm in spite of his restless movements. It wouldn’t do to let his nerves get too ruffled, not when he was going into a job like this that would take him across a great deal of dangerous territory and possibly even a long distance beyond it; he needed to be ready. So, he tried hard to think positive thoughts - after all, there was nothing wrong with having confidence in yourself.
But, as always, that only seemed to make things worse. In moments like these, however, it didn’t matter if you believed in yourself - your body was telling you otherwise. The feeling of weakness creeping up from his feet, making every muscle in his legs shake uncontrollably under him and threaten to give out under him, was enough proof to say anything but that. He swallowed thickly and took several deep breaths in an attempt to clear away the nausea. After all, he wasn’t actually ill - just a bit nervous about what he was planning to do next.
