“Be quiet.”

Muffling the sound that comes out of the sailor’s mouth with my hand, I look left and right to be sure we weren’t seen.

Bathing in the moon’s dim light, I pull my victim in the shadows and knock him out.

My partner and two young men jump from above, dragging another unconscious sailor with them.

“That makes two.” TIAN SHUI says.

With the help of two juniors, we managed to infiltrate the ship two nights before it sails.

We jump off the deck with our two victims and hide between containers.

Unclothing them quickly, I shout, startled, after feeling something on his chest.

“What the fuck, TIAN HUO! Keep quiet!” Whispers TIAN SHUI.

“What’s the problem, shixiong?”

That’s the junior TIAN SHUI had stopped me from kicking to death.

“This one is a woman…” I say with an awkward smile.

The juniors and TIAN SHUI look at each other before the latter spouts: “Who cares, grab her uniform, we can’t afford to lose more time!”

I sigh and manage to unclothe her with my eyes closed.

“But I don’t want to wear a woman’s uniform…” I mumble.

We also take their smartphones and leave them with our juniors.

“Now take them to the Master of Finance, I’ve sent him a message already, so he knows what to do with them.” Says TIAN SHUI.

The message he sent was just something like ‘Hello we caught some ruffians during our mission, they’re very fierce and should be locked down for at least five days. Do not let them out or give them any way of communicating with the outside for this lapse of time, feed them a little fish now and then, thanks xoxo.’ Which the Master of Finance answered with the sticker of a dog and question marks.

The shidi executed their tasks and left with the sailors, so we headed back to the hideout with their uniforms and smartphones in hand.

“I cracked the phones’ security so now you have access to their identity and emails. That one is Unagi and this one is Takoyaki.”

This little boy, in his tiny computer room, is as fast as our hacking team…

“Why food name?!”

“It’s their real names.” The boy laughs.

“Probably fake names. If I’m not wrong, this ship is filled to the brim with yakuza.” The tall woman explains.

“I changed all their profiles’ pictures with yours. There’s no way a company this big will recognize everybody, and you’re Asian so they won’t suspect you for not being Japanese, probably.”

“Unfortunately for you, they are deck ratings!” Laughs the lady.

“What’s that?” I ask.

“The lowest of the low, you’ll be cleaning and scratching and watching and waiting. Everyone is above you and you will do all the chores they ask. These guys were probably on watch duty when you caught them, right?”

TIAN SHUI and I look at each other: “Actually, they were wiping the decks…”

“After midnight…” I add.

“Is that reasonable?!” He screams.

“We’re going to die.” I pant.

“See, that’s what I told you.”

“Yakitori and Futomaki, I am so sorry!” He cries.

“It’s Unagi and Takoyaki.” Frowns the boy.

I grab TIAN SHUI’s shoulders “Actually, didn’t we save them from torture?!”

“You are right… We are heroes, true heroes!” He weeps in my arms.

“TIAN SHUI…” I cry.

The boy and the lady look at each other in disbelief until the small woman barges in and shouts: “Boobies! Where the hell have you hidden my socks?!”

The tall woman sighs and pushes her out.

“You fucking idiot, you don’t need socks with this dress!”

“Have you seen my gloves?”

Hearing my sister’s muffled voice, I remove one of my earphones.

“What did you say?”

Only the two of us are still working inside the security cabin at this late hour. I scroll on my tablet while my sister watches the screen on which all the ship’s security cameras are transmitted.

She stretches and sighs: “I think I forgot my gloves at home.”

My favorite pop idol song is playing so I quickly put the earphone back in my ear but I reduce the volume.

“Can’t they give you some at the reception?”

She pouts. “But I wanted them white…”

Her beautiful yukata smells like honey today.

“How did it go with Grandma?” She asks with a smile.

“You shouldn’t call her like that, she’ll hear you.” I say, covering my pocket.

“I don’t care, I’ll beat her up!” She laughs.

“Her guards are scary, they can slip behind you and slit your throat.”

“My, my, scary indeed!” She says cheerfully, putting a hand to her lips.

This hand and the other are decorated with a traditional patterned tattoo that goes all the way to her shoulders. It’s the pattern of our family.

“You jest, but I almost died there.”

She enlaces me from behind. Her cold, slender hands reach for my left earphone and gently takes it out so she can whisper.

“I won’t let her, my TADPOLE. I’ll protect you from arrows and fire.”

The notes of my pop idol song resonate sharply in the cabin for a few seconds.

I grab my earphone back. “It’s time to sleep.” I say, standing up.

She straightens up and strokes my hair: “You’re so diligent!”

Taking my remaining stuff from the table, my sight falls on the monitor.

“Did you see something?” She asks.

I take the remote control and zoom. The third camera shows the 1st deck, empty.

The sailor who was wiping it abandoned his bucket of soap.

I go a few minutes backward. Two men’s shadow knocked him out and jumped with him to the lower deck.

I switch to camera 1 that shows the entrance. Nothing. I go back to the menu with all the 75 cameras and try to spot anything weird on them, going forward and backward, until I figure out something on the 22nd.

“Here.” I say, while showing the cloud-shaped piece of fabric we have a glimpse of, between the containers.

My sister’s smile fades out into a frown. Punching the air in front of her, she spits: “Triads.” Before rushing out of the cabin, slamming the door behind her.

We showed up on the first deck the next morning with sailor uniforms. After getting roasted by our superior for leaving it dirty, we had to wipe every single atom of marble until it burns our retinas from their glow and cut all the onions left on Earth until we cried what was left of our eyes for 4 hours straight.

“It does be hard to be at the bottom…”

“Shut up TIAN HUO.”

Inside our cabin, we lie on the ground, one atop the other, fighting against exhaustion.

“You said we would share the uniforms equally.” I articulate.

“Yes, we did.”

“So why did I get the skirt?”

“Because I have the heels.”

“The uniforms didn’t have heels.”

Silence follows.

“You just like to wear heels.” I finish.

After a whole minute, TIAN SHUI finally answers: “The uniforms aren’t that different in the end.”

“Yes, they are.”

“Should we switch tomorrow?”

“No.”

Silence again.

“Why not?”

After an eternal silence, I finally declare.

“It’s comfy…”

“Hey you! What’s your name?!”

“Unagi, sir!”

The captain looks at me with an odd smirk.

“Wasn’t Unagi a woman?”

“I love cross-dressing.” I pronounce with great ease.

“Your Japanese accent is pretty weird, aren’t you Chinese?”

“My parents.”

“I see. Mop the stairs.”

“Unagi! Where the hell is Takoyaki?” Screams a female sailor.

“I can’t tell.” I shrug.

“He left without finishing cutting the potatoes!”

“Maybe he went to the bathroom…”

She puts a hand on my shoulder and kicks my bucket of soap down the stairs under my bewildered eyes.

“So, you’ll have to cut in his stead…”

Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut…

I finish two bottles of water in one gulp.

Looking at my reflection in the bathroom’s mirror, I cough and puke on the sink.

I want to die.

“UNAGI!”

I want to cry.

“WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED WITH YOUR SOAP?!”

I want to fly away.

“WHERE IS TAKOYAKI?!”

I want to sink.

“GO BRUSH THE BAR!”

I want to punch.

“COME OUT ALREADY!”

I want to punch!

“I NEED SOMEONE TO CARRY THOSE CASES!”

I WANT TO PUNCH!!!

“TIAN HUO!”

My fist flies in the air and hits TIAN SHUI’s hand who entered by the window.

“T-TIAN SHUI!” I grab his neck.

“Sorry to make you do everything. I found it.”

Showing the map on his smartphone, he points at the cabin he colored in red, on the last floor.

“This is their security cabin, that’s where all the cameras are monitored.”

I listen with tears in my eyes.

“And this is the list with all the invited people and their cabins. The group will settle in that one.” He adds.

“Fourth floor…”

“Cabin 4241.”

Wiping my tears, I smile.

“Now, it’s time to get the things ready before they come!”

“YAKINIKU, GET OUT OF HERE OR I BREAK DOWN THE DOOR!”

“Maybe finish the chores first…”
