Chapter 27: A deck rating has worked too hard

“Hey boys, everything’s alright?”

Boobies yells while entering the cabin.

I’ve been feeling kind of anxious since we set foot on this ship.

“Who’s that?” asks TIAN SHUI.

First of all, we’re here to steal jewels on an isolated moving fortress with guards everywhere. Secondly, I have to wear a dress. And thirdly, meeting now with Francesco is…

“Someone we met, an acquaintance of DIANA.”

“Hi guys.” Francesco waves.

I… am not confident around him.

It’s not a lie when I said I barely recognized him earlier, but he… He noticed me in this crowd, while I was wearing a dress and makeup, things I never had in school… How?

“Some things happen, and we’re going to switch to his cabin.”

“After all we did to get your stuff in this one?!” Exclaims TIAN HUO.

I somehow have this weird feeling that… Francesco was waiting for me…

I rush to the bathroom and lock the door.

Boobies’s muffled voice resonates from across the door. “DIANA?”

This dress… truly doesn’t fit me.

It’s a deep navy blue patterned white dress, which is long enough to cover my ankles, but barely hides the blue lace floral sheer tights and small shoes that Boobies forced me to wear. My hair makes waves and is tied on the side by a long ribbon. Just looking at my hands reminds me of the hours she took for my nail polish, and I must contain urges to scratch my eyes that will ruin the eyeliner and mascara.

I sigh and get out of there.

Francesco sat down on the armchair next to the couch on which the guys are lying on. He’s smiling and befriending them.

“Where is Boobies?” I ask TIAN HUO.

“In the bedroom.” He answers, pointing at it.

I get to the door and knock before entering.

Inside the dim lit bedroom, the white-haired Goddess of the Hunt is smiling, her Gandiva in hand.

“They really did a good job, slipping this and the Hawkeye inside.” She says.

I go all the way to the other side of the bed and sit down, my back to hers.

“Are you okay?” She finally asks me.

Without knowing what to answer, I mumble something unintelligible.

The warmth of her body appeases me. Lying deeper at each breath, I close my eyes and fall asleep for a few minutes.

EPISODE 9: Auction

 

“DIANA… DIANA…”

I wake up to Boobies’s voice, wondering how long I’ve been sleeping.

“Uh, what?” I open an eye.

She’s been pushing me with her back muscles to make me wake up.

“You fell asleep!”

“I noticed…” I mumble, straightening myself.

“You shouldn’t sleep with your makeup. But don’t remove it now, a crew member just came in to give Francesco’s cabin’s keys to Francesco.”

I’m too zoned out for this shit.

“Why did Francesco open?”

“Because I was stuck with you, and the boys can’t be seen here.” She argues.

“What…?”

“If I left, you would have fallen down.”

“On a bed…”

“It would have woken you up.”

“Just like you did…”

Silence occurs.

“You could have left.” I pronounce.

“Yes, but I didn’t want to.”

Some weird sensation feels my head… It’s hot…

“I didn’t want to wake you up either, but we have to move out.” She says laughing.

I can’t process the reasons of my body heat rising, and I feel like if I looked in a mirror, I would be red like TIAN HUO’s hanfu.

“G-go away now, I’ll catch up!” I stutter.

I can’t let anybody see me this pathetic.

“Alright.” I can’t see her, but I can tell she said this with a smile.

She stands up and I can hear her leave the room.

After waiting a few seconds, I let myself fall on the bed in a stud.

I can still hear their muffled voices across the door.

“Don’t forget anything. If you leave anything behind, we’ll be in trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“You don’t wanna know.”

“Are you going to threaten me with your gun again?”

“Be quiet.”

And the main door finally closes, leaving the cabin silent.

Red Force and Blue Force probably left a while ago…

Resting for a few minutes, I feel a bit better. I think the heat eventually left my body, which is a good thing, I don’t want to fall sick now.

Putting myself together, I take my remaining stuff and leave the bedroom. On the round table of the cabin, a little note is left.

’Our new cabin is 12114’ is written, with a cute chibi self-portrait of Boobies next to it.

She didn’t forget anything… A smile draws on my face, and the heat settles in my belly.

“You’ll see, my cabin is much better than yours!”

“Well, yours is a VIP. Must be good to be rich.”

Walking together in the long corridors to get to the VIP section, we started chatting.

“Call me ARTEMIS.”

He whistles. “Nice name.”

“Thanks, I like it too.” I smug.

“ARTEMIS, now that we are friends, would you mind telling me what you and DIANA are planning on this boat?”

“We aren’t friends.”

He stops me by passing in front of me.

“Two members of the agency allied with crew members and armed with guns in their bras… I suppose you’re in a mission, right? Are you here to assassinate, to cover, to protect, to… steal?” He says with a smirk, doing a “no-no” movement with his finger.

I stop smiling.

“You’re not as dumb as you look like.” I spit.

“Hahaha, thanks, it takes a lot of training, you know?”

This way to act dumb to hide your potential… It reminds me of DIANA…

“You know, when I met DIANA, she was sad like a depressed puppy.” He says, laughing.

“It seems like you’re the reason why she acts so carefree?”

“See, you can guess things too! Being sad is good to make yourself look pathetic, but acting like a happy idiot, that’s what makes everybody lose their guards!”

“Why are you revealing yourself so early? You could have fooled us until the best moment.”

He puts a hand to his chin.

“Well, that’s because I want to make a deal. I wanna be part of that thing.”

“What thing?”

“Your mission, I want to be part of it.”

“Why?”

“It looks exciting.”

I heard of stories of very rich people who are desperately looking for sensations because they have everything they want, but I had never seen it in practice before.

But I hear some people walking around the corridor and I recall that we’re not in a private place, so I begin walking again and push him aside.

“Come talk in your cabin.”

Following me, he starts humming a joyful song.

Humming a pop idol song, I hear my sister slam the board in front of her.

“Have you found these Chinese yet?!” She exclaims to her 20 security guard officers.

“There are too many employees, miss.”

“But we just have to find who they impersonated! Can’t anyone tell who was that sailor who was mopping the 1st deck two nights ago?!”

“No, miss. They were working outside of schedule apparently.”

“Great time to be overzealous with your work, deck ratings!” She slams again.

Removing a single earphone, I start speaking. “The Captain has told me about a certain Takoyaki who keeps leaving work, so this might be one of them. He also mentioned someone named Unagi who has Chinese parents, but they work too hard to be a spy, according to him.”

“What does he mean by ‘work too hard’?”

I look upward to remember what he said.

“Something like… They do everything people ask, even if it’s the most humiliating and infuriating job without complaining. They apparently worked so hard they puked in the toilets and then came back to work with a smile…”

Looking around, I can notice every security guards tear up.

“This dedication…”

“What an example for the whole crew…”

“The captain should promote them…”

Even my sister seems to feel sorry for them.

“Well, being a deck rating is truly hard work…”

I put the earphone back in my ear and look to my tablet.

“Considering this Takoyaki… It’s really weird, because I have been looking for him on all the security cameras for the past hour and I can’t find him at all. Are we sure we sailed with him?”

“We’ll look into it. OK you guys? Find this Takoyaki, he must be on this ship, my guts are sure of it!”

“YES, MISS!” Say the 20 officers in unison.

After they left the security cabin, I can finally tell my sister about another important thing.

“I also sent the keys to the Cavalcanti.”

“How are you interpreting what happened?” She asks me.

“Hmm, I don’t think they’re going to make a move, the Cavalcanti family won’t win by making enemies with us, but that interaction was truly fascinating.”

“Were they just testing our knowledge?”

“I don’t know but they should know that we have identified all the guests except these two. And the Cavalcanti was with them.”

“He didn’t seem to be with them. Was he taken hostage? Or are they all Cavalcanti? Or maybe a rebellion?”

“This case is truly mysterious, but thanks to them being VIP now, we can observe all their movements. If they act suspiciously again, we can send your bears on them and they will finish the cruise in confinement. Oh, but it’s almost time!”

I stand up and launch a program on my tablet.

A jingle starts playing on all the ship’s speakers and an announcement begins.

“Ladies and Gentlemen. We are happy to inform you that the main event of this cruise will begin in 30 minutes. Please navigate toward the atrium to take the Deck 0’s dedicated elevators, if you wish to assist or participate in the Sea of Stars auction.”
