I am not a sentimental person at all.

But I’m most grateful toward my sister.

Since that moment when the missiles dropped on our homes, and she disappeared in the forest, people have been fearing her.

I don’t remember how I escaped unscathed, but she went to the hospital for a bit, and since the moment she came back, she took great care of me.

She didn’t drop a tear for the deaths of our parents, buried under the rubble.

She took care of beating anyone that mocked me.

She was the strongest.

Everyone called her a monster, but I didn’t know why.

For me, she was a strong caring sister, and thanks to her, we didn’t face great hardship for a while.

Of course, our parents died in bombardment, but we both weren’t really attached to our previous lives.

I was pretty good with electronics, so I grabbed all the scraps I could, here and there, and built my own refuge among them.

Thus, I constructed my own little computer slowly but surely.

Of course, it was far worse than the one I had before, actually far worse than most computers since the past 30 years, but it was still good enough to access the internet through a Shell, and that’s all I asked it to be.

I programmed my own video games, which were basically as beautiful as Tetris on calculators, but for me, it was great achievements.

We lived at our aunt for a bit, until we left her for social housings that were closer to my sister’s work, and moving all my stuff was a big hassle.

Thankfully, the winter was over so it wasn’t that cold.

My sister asked me to stay with our aunt, but I wanted to follow her.

I didn’t know what kind of work she did, but I never asked.

I preferred not to know, I didn’t need to know, all I need was to be grateful.

But I could be more than that, and I decided to find a way to lighten her burden.

With my scrap PC, I started to learn to hack and proceeded to make money through illegal means.

First it was very simple, like phishing, but I quickly learned how to steal personal accounts on forums and social media and get their bank info.

I would then buy crypto currencies to an international company located in China, then transfer it back to my sister’s bank account, little by little, making it seem like they were transfers from relatives, and everything worked well for a whole year.

Thanks to that money, our lives were considerably more comfortable.

Until that moment the police knocked on our door.

Since I was the only one home when it happened, they arrested me and took all my scrap.

At that time, I didn’t know that Chinese websites were heavily controlled by the government.

I didn’t care about the geopolitics at all and didn’t even know that the country that sent us these missiles was none other than China.

And it only took a few hours for the police to release me.

I didn’t exactly know how she did it, but my sister was waiting for me at the exit of the police station.

She caught me in her arms and wouldn’t let go, she was out of breath.

Behind her, two men and a woman in white suits that I had never seen before were smoking with smiles on their faces.

They had tattoos all over their bodies, but unlike my sister’s arm tattoos that were family tradition, theirs weren’t abstract patterns but tigers, crows and dragons.

“So, this is your esteemed brother?”

“What a fearful little guy if he got himself in such a situation! At his age, I stole candy in supermarket!”

“Is he the brain and you are the muscle?

Still stuck in my sister’s embrace, I couldn’t tell which of them were speaking, but as I gave a look behind, I caught the eyes of the policeman who released me. His expression of disgust sometimes still haunts me.

“Why are you holding him like this? Hey URCHIN, did you forget our terms?”

I felt her arms shiver. It was the first time I saw her in such disarray.

“URCHIN..?” I pronounced. I didn’t recognise this name.

“I can’t let you! He’s my only family!” She finally shouted.

“It’s either that, or he goes back to jail. Who knows how violently they’re going to torture him? Are you aware how harsh the life in prison is? It’s not a life for someone like him.”

“Not with this potential.”

“We’ll take good care of him.”

I finally understood what was going to happen.

My sister slowly released me and crouched so her head faces mine.

She looked like she was about to cry, but still contained her tears. She articulated: “You’re so cute and precious, an innocent little TADPOLE, you did nothing wrong.” She put a hand on my head and gently stroke my hair.

“Do we have to live apart now?” I asked.

“Yes, but it’s only for a little bit. We’ll be back together, I promise. But for now, you’ll have to follow these guys and do what they tell you.”

“Don’t worry, little guy, as long as you can follow simple orders, nothing bad will happen to you, and you’ll be back with your sister in no time.” The man who pronounced those words was the tallest of them. He had long silver died hair, white-gold piercings and many rings on his fingers.

On his left, the man was bald with scars on his jaw and missed one of his fingers.

On his right, the woman had long curly blonde hair and blue eyes, a rare sight in Japan, and carried a large suitcase on her back.

My sister stood up and faced them. “He will be in your care. If anything happens to him, I will do anything to make you pay.”

The silver hair guy raised his hands with a smug. “Ah, that doesn’t depend on us, actually.”

Which my sister answered with a punch that made him fly across the empty street.

“I don’t give a fuck.” She spitted, her fist clenched and her brows frowned.

The blonde woman instantly took out a small machine gun from her suitcase and the bald man shot a warning near my sister’s face with a revolver he kept hidden in his suit.

“Don’t shoot, don’t shoot, I’m fine!” The silver hair man laughed.

“You’re the only person who could laugh after I punched them, TOBIUO. One day we’ll have to fight seriously.”

Still on the ground, he laughed. “I’ll be waiting in the dojo!”

After that happened, they took me their office, found me some place to eat and sleep, and then we took the train for hours, until we reached a dock in the middle of nowhere. There we took a boat and ended on an island somewhere in the east. I began working in the computer science department of this shady organisation for long months and slowly climbed the ladder. I met the boss and started working for her, and it took 3 full years to meet back my sister.

Her personality changed quite a lot, she was far more cheerful and excited than before and I didn’t really recognise her at first, but deep down, I knew she didn’t change and still cared for me the most.

She became more tactile with me, and is far more respected than before.

We were both assigned on the Crowned Shogun, so we would always be together during the 3 days it is at sea, and then go back to our own posts when it’s back on earth. Then, we would only see each other for some hours once a month during the meetings, and she would be hanging around me and be talkative.

Sometimes I found her sticky and would avoid her, but nonetheless, I was still grateful.

I never missed her, but I was still grateful.

Even right now, I am still grateful.

This monster shows me a side than none other know.

She cherishes me, I am her gem.

A monster’s precious treasure.

And for that, I am forever grateful.

“Iyayraykere, Has-Uk.”

“What did he say?”

I had pulled up my phone and started filming the unconscious boy in order to blackmail his sister, but he suddenly started speaking.

I wave at the two Chinese guys behind me.

“Ainu language.”

“Yes, it’s Ainu.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

The red one answers. “I don’t know, but he just sleep talk.”

I take a few seconds to ponder and shrug.

He just mumbled some stuff in his sleep, who cares what that means.

I steady my phone and keep filming for a few seconds until I get interrupted a second time by a gunshot.

“Puttana!” I shout. “They don’t wanna let me work!”

More gunshots can be heard from my other cabin, they’re probably from DIANA’s hot friend.

The Chinese are mumbling to each other.

“Hey! Gattino! Drago!”

My two cousins who were playing poker with the Camorra couple look at me.

“Come over here.”

“But we’re winning!” They complain.

“You’re cheating anyway.” I spit.

The Camorras are shivering from head to toe and are too scared to try an escape anyway.

When my two cousins finally decide to stand up from their couch and enter the bedroom where I’m filming the unconscious boy on the bed with the two Chinese in the corner, I explain. “I’m going to see what’s going on with the commotion. Drago you keep filming it and Gattino, I want you to keep an eye on the Chinese, we don’t want them to betray us.”

“What about the Camorra?”

“They’re too dumb to leave. Capito?”

After they gave me an acquiescing nod, I walk past the couch where the Camorra are still pretending to play.

“You two’d better not move an inch, my guys are allowed to shoot you if you do.”

“Hahaha, yes, of course, we won’t, right Airim?!”

“Of course, we won’t Caasi, we love to play poker!”

“Right, we love poker so much! I love losing money!”

“Hehehe, it might be our calling, we should try getting some job in a casino!”

Their little circus is amusing, but I have more important to do and the gunshots aren’t stopping.

“We have a bunch of casinos in which you can work for us! See ya!” I wave while leaving the cabin.

I quickly walk to the other cabin. The gunshots are definitely coming from there.

I try to open it but it’s locked.

I put my ear next to the door and try to focus, it’s funny how the gunshots are now bursting in a regular rhythm.

After less than a minute, I hear a man’s scream and then a final gunshot, then nothing.

I wait for a bit and knock.

“IT’S FRANCESCO! OPEN ME!” I shout.

It takes almost 30 seconds for them to finally open me.

“What the fuck is going on here?” I say before even laying an eye on the battleground.

It’s DIANA’s hot friend who opened the door. DIANA is lying on the ground, covered in blood and short breathed.

Next to her are lying 2 bodies, and more blood, lumps of meat and bones.

“Sorry we had to stain your cabin a little bit.” ARTEMIS laughs.

I don’t know if I should act like my dumb self or my normal self anymore.

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN, ‘STAIN’, THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM! WHO ARE EVEN THESE GUYS? ANOTHER FAMILY? SECURITY?”

“Hey calm down Michelangelo, there’s no need to shout. It’s security and they wanted to search us so we had a little argument.”

“YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING INSANE!”

They were definitely already looking for the boy.

“They started. Also, we have some big issues now. We were as discreet as elephants in a room so they are already coming here, and these guys were strong as fuck. We’re gonna need the Chinese to beat them. Do you know where they are?”

“Nope.”

“Don’t forget the password, you dumb empty-headed Boobies!” DIANA says from the ground.

“Ah, true. Good job for keeping up!”

“What kind of password?” I ask, worried.

“It’s probably something the little boy with the tablet had… You know, the one who spoke with us yesterday. Would you have an idea of where he could be, by any chance?”

“Not a clue.”

Now we’re in fucking trouble. How are we supposed to fix this situation?!

First of all, I need to go back to my second cabin and…

This woman is still blocking the way.

“Hey, move aside, I need to-”

“You need what?”

“To go…”

“To go where?”

Her shining red eyes are piercing through my soul, like the ones of Glykon.

“Where were you tonight, Francesco?” She asks again.

“Just hanging out in the casino.”

“You’re lying.”

Her snake eyes can see through me. I should be a great liar, but she must smell my disarray. What the fuck is wrong with this woman? Who is she? Where does she come from? What has she gone through to be able to read human soul like this?

A moment of weakness is all she needed to understand.

“If you don’t tell the truth right now, I will blow your head up. Where were you tonight?”

“I thought we were allies.” I smile weakly and try to put a hand on her shoulder.

“Allies trust each other.” She pushes me. “You don’t trust me, and I don’t trust you. We’ve never been allied.”

“How about the escape plan?”

“It’s just a deal. It’s put on hold until you say everything you know or end on the carpet.”

I take a moment to ponder.

“Alright, I’ll tell you, but I want something in exchange.”

This woman is growing on my nerves and I need to pin her down.

I can’t let anybody walk on me like this, it’s a question of honour!

“No more deals between us. You say or you die.”

“That’s not how it works. I have information than you want, we should exchange it.”

“What do you know?”

“I know where the boy is.”

“What do you want?”

“Just one thing, White Snake. You are the one we called Bashmu from Middle East and Vritra from India, right? I never expected to meet a legend like you.”

“I’m not.”

I may have a hard time hiding a lie now, I’m still good at noticing one.

“You’re not the only one who can read souls, White Snake! Say, ARTEMIS of Omond’s agency, what is your real name?”

If some believe that knowledge is power, then how much power would this invaluable knowledge bring me?
