It’s hot.

Even the morning on this stupid island is ridiculously hot.

I woke up in another girl’s bed and this cheap bitch doesn’t even have the air conditioning…

Without waking her up, I put on my clothes and leave.

As I leave her apartment, the sun rays tickle my eyes and I put my sunglasses on.

When I make enough money, I’ll leave for the south. I heard the weather is more chill near the volcano.

Of course, the volcano isn’t active so it’s perfectly safe.

But first of all, I need to find a way to get DIANA back. I can’t let her stay with that girl.

I walk between the buildings to profit of their shadows and begin a phone call.

“Too early, SIRONA, way too early.”

A hoarse deep 30-year-old male voice responds to it.

“What?” I spit.

“I barely slept.”

“Garbage like you doesn’t deserve to sleep. Where are you?”

“On site in 5 seconds.”

“And ASCLEPIUS?”

“He’s there since yesterday.”

“He didn’t tell me!”

“It’s in the group chat.”

“Y’all speak too much, I muted it.”

“That’s why you missed last week’s barbecue.”

“Fuck off, I’ll call him.”

I hang up and begin a new call.

“Yo whassup? Overslept?”

This time it’s a young and energetic male voice that responds.

“I was just told that you’re there already.”

“You’re late sis! I’m there for hours!”

“I know now, did you sleep in the trash?”

“Only losers sleep!”

“Say that to HECTOR.”

“He just arrived. Yo loser! No fuck off, that’s my spot, you go there. DON’T WALK IN FRONT OF MY RADARS!”

“Did you start analysing the building?”

“Yep, but there is only one person inside and none in the basement. Are you meeting with ORPHEUS?”

“Yeah, we’ll be on the other side. Are you sure there is only one person?”

“Positive.”

“Alright, I’ll call you back.”

I hang up and open my beacon app.

Since yesterday the blue dot appears on the sea. I thought it may have been bugged for a bit, or she may have lost it, but after verification, it seems that it’s following the Crown Shogun’s exact trajectory. It couldn’t randomly appear on such a ship, so it’s probably her, and there are no current missions like that in the agency.

She must be following the girl’s orders. I can’t let her do what she wants with my sister!

In the building’s shadows, I walk past a black man with sunglasses, long dread locks in a dark blue suit who is leaning on a wall, a blue bow tie and a guitar case in his hand. He finishes his cigarette.

“Hey ORPHEUS.” I say, without stopping.

He silently follows me and the few passersby notice how odd we are and look back at us. We definitely seem like a concert band.

I sigh. “Wanna stop in a café?”

He raises an eyebrow. “What about the mission?” I like how soothing his voice sounds like. It definitely contrasts with the two others.

“I’m going to call the other guys, we should drop the plan for now. The targets are away for at least 2 more days.”

He stops walking at once and scratches his head.

“I see… my sister is a waitress in a café, 5-minute walk from here… Their carrot cake is delicious.”

“Super, let’s-” I begin until my phone starts ringing.

“SIRONA, something is happening in the White Snake’s hideout!”

I click my tongue.

Guess the carrot cake will have to wait.

“What…?” She pronounces.

“Your real name.” He repeats.

My head hurts.

“What’s even the point? You will never know if what I say is true or false?”

“Right, but that’s not the point. What I’m showing is that I know who you are and whatever you do or say here, I can spread it. I have influence throughout whole countries. With your name, I ask for your trust. I want you to work for me. You will be wealthy and protected.”

“I don’t need protection.”

“I can end all the shit that happened on this ship with a snap of my fingers.”

“You think I can’t just kill you? You’re all alone here.”

My head hurts…

“The fact I came here alone, and I mean on this ship, with only two bodyguards, is a proof in itself that I risk nothing.”

“You have some guts but you don’t amuse me anymore. Tell me where the boy is now or I shoot you.”

“So that’s what you are? A coldblooded killing machine? A snake in and out? I should mention that my left eye is fake and has a camera in it. Whatever happens in front of me is recorded, everything you say or do is saved. If I die, it will be automatically retransmitted to all my family, and you will be tracked everywhere. You won’t know rest, you won’t know peace.”

“That’s my life already, one more or one less?”

“Then shoot! DO IT, WHITE SNAKE! My whole life I’ve been prepared to die! Do you know how many times I’ve had a gun on my-”

“Wh-”

Ah.

He finally shut up.

His face covered in blood, he puts a hand to his left cheek to evaluate how big the hole is.

“-iada…” He tries to articulate.

From behind his back, I planted my knife in his cheek.

He falls on his knees and spits blood on the ground. Some pieces of his tongue and gum mixed with it. He’s lucky he didn’t lose all of it.

“DIANA?” Boobies asks with surprise.

I can’t explain why.

At this moment, I felt utter disgust towards my previous friend, but I couldn’t say why.

I just couldn’t let him.

Let him do what?

I don’t know. I couldn’t let him.

He wasn’t allowed to do it.

To do what exactly?

Whatever it was, I wouldn’t let him do it!

“I DON’T CARE!” I shout.

“What?!” Boobies exclaims, surprised.

Still on his knees, I put my foot on Francesco’s head and make him crawl on the ground.

“Aaaaaaaaaa! -iada! -iana!” He weeps.

SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP

“SHUT UUUUUUUUUUUUUP!”

I release his head only to push it harder.

“I DON’T CARE WHY I CAN’T ACCEPT IT BUT I CAN’T!!!”

“Hey DIANA, calm down. What’s wrong?”

“APOLOGISE!”

“What? Who? Me?”

“NOT YOU! YOU! APOLOGISE!” I say while insisting on the second you by pushing his head harder on the ground.

“Ah… I get it… DIANA, do you actually feel bad for me?”

Uh, what?

My anger towards Francesco is uncontrollable, but somehow these words made me release the pressure on my foot.

“Are you angry because Francesco was rude to me? I don’t need you to react like that, I was going to kill him myself, you know.”

That doesn’t make any sense.

Of course, I know Boobies can defend herself. She can much better than me, actually.

My reaction must be more complicated than that.

“IT’S NOT THAT!” I shout.

“So, what is it? Francesco didn’t do anything bad to you, right?”

YES, HE DID!

Wait, why am I sure of this?

I can’t remember what he did exactly to me that made me feel this bad.

“HE-” I begin, but I get interrupted by his difficult mumbling.

“-ry. -ory. -ory. -ory.”

Is he actually apologising?

I totally release my foot from his head but he doesn’t stand up, his face bleeding so much that he almost could drown in it.

“Francesco, why don’t you just tell us where the boy is now?” Boobies asks, a little exasperated. “We’re running out of time.”

Still facing the ground, he slowly takes out his phone from his pocket and throws it to the ground. He then proceeds to fall on his right flank and breathes heavily.

“-orry, -sorry DIANA, I… fucked up…”

“What the hell did he do?” Boobies grabs his phone and her expression changes.

“You’re a piece of garbage, Francesco, you know that?” She says with a little smile on her face. “Where is that?”

“-oom. HM! AAaa. -bin -cabin 12249.”

She quickly transfers the video to her own smartphone and throws Francesco’s back next to him.

“Come DIANA. We don’t have a minute to waste. Francesco, the ninjas are all coming here. Cooperate with them or help us, the choice is yours.”

Boobies grabs the suitcase in which she hid Gandiva and opens it. She puts it on her shoulder with the strap and throws a lighter to the ground.

“I think you’re smart enough to make the right one.” She finishes, and opens the cabin’s door.

She looks left and right to make sure that the road is clear and heads into the corridor.

“DIANA!” She whispers behind her back.

I take a few seconds to look at Francesco’s pathetic body on the ground and admire how quickly all my anger vanished before my eyes.

I give a long sigh and head towards the corridor to follow Boobies.

I did wrong to my friend.

I didn’t know they were in such a relationship, but it all adds up now. I’m sorry DIANA.

Short breathed, it takes me long minutes for the pain in my cheek to lighten enough so I can move my body.

It’s only a matter of seconds before the whole cabin gets surrounded by dozens of yakuza.

I grab the lighter that the White Snake gave me and gather all the inflammable stuff I can find.

With a piece of glass from the window that’s lying on the ground since the previous fight, I cut slices of my clothes and a bunch of my hair to put on top.

I seize the small sample of perfume I keep in my jacket and pour it on the pile.

Finally, I open the lighter and throw it on top.

I proceed to go back to the bedroom and hide under the bed.

And now, I wait.

“-live… -live… feel alive…” I laugh.

My improbable excitement makes me forget the pain on my cheek.
