Chapter 38: The fool’s gold

One punch splits the mountains, another changes the course of rivers.

Her soul burns like the blaring sun.

The fire in her eyes illuminates the road to glory.

None on Heaven or Earth can march alongside her.

Those are the emotions one with martial knowledge feels when crossing the path of this absolute monster.

With steam escaping from her mouth with each expiration, she has lost most of her human traits.

Incapacitating TIAN SHUI with one arm, she slams him on the walls with ease.

Holding his neck, he doesn’t have time nor strength to scream or call for help.

Trying to escape her grasp, he pulls his legs up to her face and pushes as hard as he can.

With one crazy headbutt on his chin, he drops instantly unconscious.

His brain still shaking from the shock, she throws his body above her shoulder onto the ground, in a famous judo grip, the ippon seoi nage.

Not stopping there, she steps on his unconscious face and kicks it.

Snapped out of my confusion, I call her.

“STOP IT!”

The ‘fight’ lasted thirteen seconds and resulted in complete defeat.

Bloodthirsty, the monster ignores my call and kicks him a second time.

“STOP RIGHT NOW OR I KILL YOUR BROTHER!” I shout, pressing the boy’s neck with my hand.

“Ugh~”

The sound of his difficult breathing reaches her madden ears, and she growls.

She grabs TIAN SHUI by the shirt and throws him in my direction.

“I’m done. Give my brother back.” She says, coldly.

I release my grasp on his soft neck and lay him on the ground.

I walk towards TIAN SHUI, slowly, as to not anger the monster.

I put two fingers on his neck and feel his heart beating.

“TIAN SHUI…” I feel ashamed of myself for having asked him to get beaten like this.

At least it’ll allow us to escape, right?

I raise my sight and the monster has disappeared.

A shadow grows on top of me and as I look up, I see her body.

Without impulse, she jumped above us and reaches the other side of the corridor. She reaches her brother.

Standing right between, she rid us of our hostage.

“Now it’s your turn.” She breathes.

“That wasn’t the deal.” I rapidly panic.

“You tried to kill my brother. The deal is over.”

Her cold voice leaves no place for mercy.

Of course, mercy was a gift from the gods granted to humans.

Beasts and monsters have no use for it.

As she closes the gap between us with two steps, I ponder desperately how to get out of this situation.

The exit is right behind us but I won’t have the time to run away with TIAN SHUI in my arms.

Thankfully, right next to me lies a fire extinguisher.

I rapidly grab it, but I don’t have time to open and use it.

So, I’ll just throw it!

I throw it on our opponent’s face, who predictably blocks it with a punch.

But her strength is thus, her arm went right through it.

The highly pressured nitrogen that lied inside is now releasing in the corridor, making a dense cold mist around us.

Reacting at the speed of light, I grab TIAN SHUI in my arms and run towards the exit. On the other side, the girl roars from anger.

The elevator opens in a ‘ding.’

When I hoped that we could finally escape, the thin smile that was drawing on my face vanishes.

From the crowded elevator, fifteen trained security guards are rushing out.

Episode 10.5: Blaze

 

“Wake up! Cavalcanti!”

“Cavalcanti! Wake up!”

Two idiots slap me out of my coma.

My skin hurts from the burns and I still have trouble breathing.

Coughing, I open my eyes and notice the reason why the wind is blowing so much down here.

I mean, up here. We’re on top of the ship’s roof.

“How did we survive?” I ask in a cough.

“Oh! He’s alive!”

“He’s alive! But blind! He doesn’t see the swimming pool!”

The swimming pool?

What I thought to be the ship’s roof is actually a hidden deck, the highest one, with a gigantic pool and what looks like saunas.

“Is this a joke?”

“No, no! The crew has its own leisure deck!”

“It’s common on cruise ships!”

I take a deep breath. It’s still hard for me to do anything but lie down.

“And you two, how could you breathe in the smoke?”

The look at each other with huge smiles on their faces.

“Us?”

“Caasi and Airim?”

“We don’t have lungs!”

“We have fake lungs!”

“Robotic lungs!”

“Cybernetic lungs!”

“Beautiful, shining, silver lungs!”

“Sparkling, clean, filtering lungs!”

“The Camorra can make you…”

“Make you…”

“ANY LUNGS!” They laugh in unison.

So, it’s just prothesis lungs, like my eye.

“Is that the only modified thing in your body or is there your brains too?” I sigh.

“How did you know?” The woman raises an eyebrow.

“IT’S A JOKE! A JOKE!” The man shakes his hands quickly.

I cough and sigh. What now?

“Why did you save me?”

They stop playing around and look at each other seriously.

“Why did we save you?”

“Caasi and Airim?”

“Hmmm…”

“HMMMM……”

Are they making fun of me!

“It’s very simple!”

“VERY MUCH!” They finally say with a finger risen.

“You still have a part to play!”

“Indeed, you do!”

“Pfft.” I laugh.

I laugh and tear up a little bit.

Why, though? Because some people I was making fun of and planned to torture and kill, in the end saved me and are telling me I still have a role to play in the world?

Or because they are such idiots, I can’t help feeling sad for them?

“Yes, yes, Cavalcanti, if you die…”

“If you die…”

“HOW ARE WE GOING TO ESCAPE FROM HERE?!”

“DIAMOND!” They shout in unison.

I look at Boobies who seems to understand the situation.

“What are you giving in exchange?” She asks.

The grandma and grandpa laugh with their funny manners.

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“They don’t think it’s obvious!”

“What we want is diamond, the most precious one!”

“In exchange…”

“The most beautiful, shining, pure, expensive!”

“We give you…”

“The most unscathed, radiant, rare!”

“A WAY OUT!”

“A WAY OUT!”

Well, if it isn’t our escape plan?

Boobies seem satisfied with the terms and quickly takes a diamond out.

“Is this what you want?”

They rush to the counter, stepping on the corpses with no care in the world.

“YES! YES!”

“GOOD JOB, MISSY!”

“VERY GOOD JOB!”

“BEAUTIFUL JOB!”

They reach their hand to grab the precious gem, but Boobies takes it back.

“You’ll get it when we’ll have escaped. Don’t take me for a fool.”

They look utterly disappointed and disgust is clearly showing on their faces, but they still smile.

“Naturally!”

“Obviously!”

Their spite can’t be more obvious, but I like them.

“Perfect. Show the way.” Boobies smiles.

“Yes, yes.”

“The way, this way.”

They mumble while walking back from where they came from.

Before leaving, Boobies take out a few more gems with her and then jump across the counter.

She gives me a hand and I intuitively grab it.

Inside of it, I feel another hard rock.

“What is it?” I ask her.

“I don’t remember the name.” She answers. “It looked good so I took it.”

In my hand lies the shining jet black with white reflections enclaved cubes. This gem’s radiance can’t be called pretty, but is strangely soothing and addictive.

“Fool’s gold…” I whisper.

“That was the name? Sounds perfect for us.” She laughs.

I smile.

“Sure does.”

What are we going to tell our superiors?

‘We’re sorry, Jinqian Shi, our mission is a failure because we followed the two women, we were supposed to spy, on a suicide mission on a ship filled with yakuza!’

We definitely weren’t the right people for this mission in the first place.

For the next time, I recommend choosing members with bigger brains.

That’s what I was thinking, halfway unconscious, as what looks like TIAN HUO is fighting like there is no tomorrow.

The yakuza are surrounding him, they’re using different kinds of weapons from katana to trident.

With his clothes ragged from all the action, he struggles as he can to make us escape this mess, while I’m lying in his arms like a princess.

“You… Should have left me…” I finally pronounce.

“TIAN SHUI, YOU’RE AWAKE!” I can hear despair in the timbre of his voice.

The sister doesn’t seem to be around here. When I look behind his shoulder, I see she is squatting next to her brother. Her left arm is rolled up in a long gray cloth.

“TIAN HUO, we won’t be able to leave together. Not as long as this monster is there.” I say with difficulty.

It was my mistake if we’re in this situation in the first place.

“Let me down.”

I push TIAN HUO who finally lets me go and I fall on the ground.

Because I got hit in the chin so bad, my legs still won’t listen to me.

One of the yakuza grasps the situation and try to stab TIAN HUO with his long trident, but he steps aside to avoid it and the weapon falls right on me and pierces my trapezius.

Our duo’s cohesion is long gone…

“TIAN SHUI!” He screams and kicks the yakuza so hard; he breaks the wall and falls over.

It was exactly on this part of the wall that my body was thrown at multiple times, damaging its structure enough that it could break with some little help.

The wind blows dramatically from this hole and what lies on the other side is the open sea.

The other yakuza are stunned by what happened. Of course, they didn’t know the wall was damaged before, so now they have to consider that TIAN HUO’s power is enough to pierce it and are going to proceed with more care.

But we don’t have time for any of that.

With the trident still stuck in my back, I find the strength to stand up.

The wind brings with it the smells of the sea, the noise of the boat and the sound of seagulls.

“TIAN HUO, I am going to take full responsibility for this mission’s failure. You ought to explain that everything that happened was my fault, and be discarded from it.”

“What do you mean?”

TIAN HUO standing right behind me, I can’t find the strength to look at him in the eyes.

From afar, the sound of an engine in the sky approaches.

The yakuza slowly surrounding us again, I can hear the sister speaking with her brother in the back. She seems to not consider us as a threat anymore, but there is no way for both of us to leave.

With a faint smile, I sigh.

“You always were the hard worker between us, you’re smart and strong, so you’re the one who should live. That’s just fair.”

“What?”

“Heck, it’s been months and I still can’t speak a bit of Omen. There are things that only you can do.”

“No, you… You can do many things that I can too!”

“The only thing I’m asking is that you take care of our shidi, you always had little patience for that.”

“I don’t care about them; I care about you! What are you-”

In a swift, inescapable movement, I turn around and push him.

He did not expect this betrayal.

He falls right in the hole he made in the ship’s wall and plunges into the sea.

I trust the shidi and shixiong to find him in time. His chances of living are much higher in the sea than up here.

After this effort that asked me all my willpower, I fall on my knees and sob.

The yakuza, bewildered by what happened rush at me and pin me down.

“Don’t kill him.” The sister says. “Dying is too easy, he’ll pay tenfold the amount he hurt us.”

Pinned down by the men and women of this ship, all my body is in pain, but my soul is more.

In the impossibility to think straight, my only hope is that TIAN HUO will never have to pay for what happened.

We were too confident and arrogant.

We deserved a divine punishment.

But if I’m allowed to, I’d like to be punished for both of us.

There is nothing that scares me more than TIAN HUO being hurt because of me.

They can torture me all they want, if I have the slight hope that TIAN HUO will be safe, then I can die in peace.

CHAKCHAKCHAKCHAKCHAKCHAKCHAK

“What is it?” The sister asks.

“It’s the sound… of a helicopter.” The boy who had awakened pronounces.

I don’t really care about anything else, but it’s true. While all of this happened, a helicopter was coming towards us, and is now in a stationary flight above the ship.

Through the hole in the wall, I can partially see it, and its colors remind me of a European flag.
