A woman walks away from one of the cabins and notices my presence.

She comes to greet me. “So, you’re the child they found yesterday? Where do you come from? Are your parents dead?”

Her tone is severe but her face is gentle. Since I started, I keep playing the mute and shake my head.

“You can’t speak? It’s true that Nila mentioned that you didn’t say a thing. Do you understand what I say?”

I nod.

“Good, follow me.” She waves me to come.

I enter the cabin where she came from and I notice the delicious smelling food came from here. Two children are diligently folding leaves in which they insert a mix of rice and stewed vegetables, then leave them to dry before boiling them. They give me a suspicious look but I don’t pay more attention to them.

The woman hands me a broom from behind the door and continues her severe attitude. “Since you’re here, you should work. Food isn’t free, you know? How about you sweep the floor in houses? Then go offer your services to the elders. Don’t forget to thank them for their hospitability!” She finishes with a finger risen.

I may be looking for something before coming here but I don’t know where to start so having an excuse to move freely and look around comes handy. I silently grab the broom and begin sweeping. The woman looks satisfied.

I hear the children whisper to each other. “Where does he come from?”

“Do you think he’s cursed?”

My appearance made them believe I was a boy but I couldn’t care less. It’s rare for girls in this country to have short hair and dress so lightly.

I sigh. Things would have been simpler for me if I was a boy.

Men have tried to abuse me multiple times in the past because I’m a girl, even that guy who worked for my brother… Recalling about this event makes me want to vomit, so I try to think about something else. Something drastically different, like what happened yesterday…!

My head burns when I remember about that night, I feel like my skull is going to split open, and I have the urge to fall in a fetal position and hide in a hole. Thankfully, the broom helps me stay on my feet, though I can’t keep straight and quickly jump away from this cabin.

The sun is bright in the sky and I feel it burning my skin. I used to be more dressed to shield from it, but I lost some of my clothes in the desert, and the girl from yesterday only gave me a top, which is long enough to fit my whole body, but is very uncomfortable and doesn’t cover properly my arms and my head.

I jump swiftly to the next cabin to not stay too long outside and start sweeping again.

The woman from before followed me and puts a hand under her chin. “You… Aren’t you a girl?”

I make an uncontrolled grimace and she grabs me by the neck like a stray cat. “I knew it! You can’t stay like this, you little idiot! Come back with me!”

She pulls me back inside the first cabin and starts looking in the wooden chest behind the stove. “Nimrit, come help me look for clothes that’ll fit her.” She asks one of the two children who were still making food.

“What? She’s a girl??” The boy exclaims.

“Why do I have to share my clothes?!” The girl, responds with indignation.

“I thought I taught you to share your things with people in need, can’t you see she’s an orphan? And mute? You have to learn empathy, child.”

She takes out a child-size Punjabi female suit that looks terribly inconvenient for fighting, but nothing can free me from this predicament, and I rather have this than burn under the sun.

“Anhad, go out for a bit, take a break and go play with Simrat’s children.” The woman says, checking if the suit fits me by hanging it in front of me.

The boy named Anhad stands, cursing. “Simrat’s children are little kids, how can I have fun with them?!” And then leaves the cabin.

Meanwhile, the woman pulls me further inside and I struggle like a stray cat who doesn’t want to bath, to not get undressed by strangers.

“Nimrit, grab her legs.” She orders, coldly.

“Ah! AAAAAAH! I CAN DO IT ALONE!!!” I finally scream.

Fuck, my cover is done.

Bewildered, the woman finally let go of me. “You can speak?! Why didn’t you say anything?!” She scolds me, angered.

“I … can get dressed alone…” I hiss.

She sighs and hands me the suit. “Fine, come Nimrit, we’ll get more water.” She takes the girl’s hand and walks away.

The girl, though, silently stares at me for the whole time with her big round eyes.

When they finally leave the cabin, I take off the light clothes that the girl from yesterday gave me and folds them properly before wearing the child-sized suit the woman offered me, a beautiful scarlet and Bordeaux red embroidered tunic and a light purple dupatta. The top, the kameez is similar to a long, tight shirt, and the top, the shalwar is loose and airy.

I take a deep sigh and take a better look at what the children have been doing.

From what I’ve seen, they’re just making small packages of leaves with the rice and vegetables inside. And without thinking, I continue their work.

Watching them do a few times was enough for me to catch the trick, and when the woman and her daughter come back with water, they see me and gasp. “My, you know how to do this?”

I had lowered my guard and stood up straight the moment I heard them enter; as if an enemy was coming. And when I realize I had no need to act so suspicious, I stand still, confused, without knowing what to do.

The little girl runs toward the stove and awes. “Wow, you did it alone? Sit with me, big sis’! We’ll make more!”

I preferred when I could move around the cabins by sweeping dust, but I can’t seem to be able to refuse, and sit back down.

The mother walks past us and asks me. “What is your name? Do you have one?”

I shake my head left and right.

“That isn’t right…” She says, a finger next to her mouth. “How about we call you Gini? With your shining skin and white hair, I think it fits you well.”

A warm sensation builds in my stomach and I feel heat on my face. I lower my head and nod slowly.

“Good girl, Gini!” Laughs Nimrit, who continues the leaf folding.

The woman squats and lands a hand on my head.

“Yes, you seem to like this. Nice to meet you, Gini. My name is Ishqam.”

I blush and look into her shining brown eyes. She smiles so brightly that it brings tears to my eyes.

As to hide them, I nod and lower my head further.

And we silently work until the end of the afternoon.

When the sun is setting, some parts of the settlements gather together to have dinner.

A group of men and women accompanied with their numerous children have gathered in front of this small cabin to eat the food we made.

As the people get agitated, I wonder where the girl from yesterday is.

I hesitate to ask Ishqam about it, but she is now busy chatting with the others.

Suddenly, they turn to my direction and wave at me to come.

Two elders and three women were speaking with her and they greet me with a smile as I meet them with a nod.

“This is Gini.” Nimrit says. “It’s the girl that Nala and Nila brought yesterday.”

“Is that so?” One of the elders says. “Where did they find her?”

“In the desert, a few dunes west from here.” Another woman explains. “I thought she couldn’t speak; how do you know her name?”

Nimrit smiles. “I gave it to her myself.”

She didn’t mention the fact I could speak…

“Are you going to adopt her?” The same woman asks.

“I don’t know, but the best would be to know where she comes from. Does anyone have a hint?” Nimrit questions the elders.

The old man takes a closer look to me and puts a hand on his chin. “Are we sure she is an albino?”

A woman who didn’t speak yet asks. “Aren’t all albinos pale skinned and have white hair?”

The elder agrees. “Yes, but I’ve seen many albinos and they didn’t look quite like this… This child… If she’s a foreigner then it would explain why she can’t speak, she simply doesn’t speak Punjabi, don’t you think so?”

“She understands.” Nimrit cuts. “She did what I asked her.”

“I see…” The elder finishes. “Well, she’ll be in your care, then.”

Under the suspicious look of the other women Nimrit thanks the elders and walks away, her hand gently pushing my back so she doesn’t leave me behind.

From back there, I hear the women whisper to each other. “What if she’s an albino, they’re bad luck! Nimrit’s household is cursed!”

“I’ll never eat her food anymore. May the gods protect us.”

“What if she’s with the terrorists? I heard they used children too!”

They’re quite suspicious as expected, but I need to make myself look more vulnerable and harmless so they trust me enough to show me where lies what I’m looking for…

I eat some bits of the stuffed leaves and feel satisfied with my work. Too bad if you won’t eat, stupid woman.

Most children are still scared of me or find me suspicious, but Nimrit’s children are happily playing with my hair and running around me, saying jokes.

The sun has almost entirely set and some families have already left to their cabins. When I look up at the sky, the moon is still very full and bright, and I can’t help but remember the scenery from yesterday.

Blushing again, I shake my head. Why am I so obsessed with this?

Deep in my heart, I kind of wish to see this girl again.

And here she is, happily waving at me from the back of her camel, twenty meters away.

“Heyyyy! How are you doing?!” She shouts.

Blushing, I look away.

Why am I doing this? I thought I wanted to see her?! Why is she shouting like this?!!!

She jumps off her camel and runs to me, she’s wearing her headphones and holds a metal detector again.

And without leaving me room to fight back, she grabs me in her arms.

“You’re so cute and light! Hahahaha!” She laughs, making circles with me in her arms, and my head is overheating too much to allow me to take a decision.

I struggle and giggle to get out of her grasp, like a cat who is sick of being cuddled.

“You’re so adorable, sorry, sorry, I’ll let you go!” She finally lets me go and I get on my knees.

Why am I so defenseless against her?!

“Sorry I couldn’t resist, you looked so adorable from there, it seems like you’re well integrated! Sorry but I can’t stay any longer, I already have to go!” She laughs and runs away.

This is outrageous, first she appears from nowhere, then disappears, then jumps at me and doesn’t give me room to breathe, then runs away somewhere again without leaving me time to say anything! This girl is worth than a free electron! Unpredictable like the laws of quantum physics!

Don’t ask why I know quantum physics at my age, my brother gave me a great education!

But I can’t let her go like this, I just need one thing, yes, one thing, I want her name before she disappears until who knows when.

Maybe with her name, I’ll be able to investigate where she lives and what she does, maybe I’ll be able to see her more.

But she’s already running away, so I rush behind her.

I quickly catch upon her, my sprinting speed is unparalleled, and while she gasps, I jump on the back of the camel she came from.

She stops her run and takes a few seconds to ponder, a hand on her chin.

“By any chance…?” She begins.

I stare at her, my eyebrows frowning. I make sure my intentions go through her thick head.

With an ‘oh’, she bonks her clenched fist into her palm. “You want to come with me!” She exclaims.

I honestly impress myself with my telepathic skills and nod.

“Ah, why not?” She shrugs, “but where I’m going is dangerous and you’ll have to do what I say. When I leave the camel behind, you stay with it and you don’t follow me, okay?”

I nod. Of course, I don’t intend to respect these instructions.

“Good.” She jumps on the camel, behind my back and orders it to stand and leave.

She doesn’t say a thing on the way to the dunes but hums a pleasing song, and my heart keeps pounding for no reason.

Thirty minutes of camel driving later, we meet up with the twins Nali and Nala next to two camels. One of them looks at me with bewilderment and the other is frowning so much he won’t be able to leave this place with no wrinkle.

“Why is this kid here?!” They shout in unison.

The girl laughs. “I just couldn’t refuse her to come! It’s fine, Nala, you’ll keep an eye on her, right?”

Nala is the one who was frowning. “Me?! No way!”

“I’ll do it, I’ll do it.” Nali says, as if to cool the situation. “What is done is done, but we can’t let her get too close. I’ll watch her with the camels, you two can go.”

We get down from the camel and I notice Nali is carrying a rifle this time. Nala also has a metal detector like the girl.

“Are we sure we won’t need Nali?” Nala says, annoyed.

Nali shrugs. “We never had use for me all the time we went. It’s fine. I’ll keep company to the camels too.”

The girl gets down from the camel and gives me a hand to go down, which I accept.

I didn’t need her help to get down, but I still accepted.

The girl holds my hand until I reach Nali’s side, he gives me a simple yet gentle smile.

“Alright, I leave her to you! Be a good girl, okay!” She waves at me.

For some reason, I feel the urge to waver her back.

Nala and the girl put their headphones on their ears and begin to slowly analyze the dunes.

In a few minutes, they’re already indiscernible in the horizon.

Nali tries to speak with me but since I don’t respond, he gets bored and yawns. Half an hour later, he throws an apple at me, and after patting the camels, lays himself on the sand and falls asleep.

Now is my chance.

In a swift movement, I sneak next to Nali, grab his rifle and disappear like a snake under the moonlight.
