Dead silent, I follow the tracks on the sand until I notice they split.

Judging by the size of the footprints, the girl went on the left, so I follow her steps.

The chill wind blows on the dunes, pushing the sand atop the footprints. Before they totally fade away, I notice her figure bathing in the moon’s glitter.

She slowly advances, one foot after the other, probing the sand with the metal detector in her hands.

This is how she found me… I wonder what she’s looking for.

I slowly get closer and am now crouching a few meters away from her.

And now what?

Should I just go to her and say, ‘Hey, it’s me!’??

I don’t even know why I am doing all that.

I took this rifle by reflex, how am I going to justify why I have it?

Struggling to find a way out of this situation, I just admire the scenery.

The chill weather of the desert nights contrasts with its daytime counterpart, but I find it far more enjoyable.

The girl’s figure looks so nice under the full moon that I can’t help but think she would make a great painting.

Suddenly, I hear a gasp.

A snake sneaked near her, and I unconsciously rush to save her.

If I can get close in time, maybe I’ll be able to kill it!

In a few seconds, I reach close enough to pull her away from danger; yet, she smashes the metal detector on its head with a solid ‘BONK,’ leaving it knocked out.

She didn’t need my help at all!

“Oh my, what are you doing here?” She giggles while looking back.

I am speechless, I’ve never seen anyone take care of a wild snake like this.

Seeing me so astonished, she moves the earphones from one of her ears. “Why did you come? Is Nali okay?”

Without saying a word, I grab her dupatta and nod.

She frowns and stares at me. “You really wanted to come, did you? I thought I told you it was dangerous!”

I shake my head.

“Wait, is that Nali’s rifle?! You can’t carry this!” She gasps, taking it from me.

Ah… Why did I not struggle a bit?!

“Nali will hear a word from me! I can’t believe he let you take his rifle and come all the way here!” She pouts.

I look down as to not face her anger.

What anger? I could kill this girl anytime I want!

Suddenly, the screeching sound coming from my ears rises.

Distressed by it, I crouch, hide my head between my legs and cover my ears so that the girl doesn’t notice.

“Falcon to White Snake, Falcon to White Snake, over.”

If I keep quiet, he’ll notice I’m busy and can’t speak now. He’ll call me back later.

“Falcon to White Snake, Falcon to White Snake, over.”

I just have to stay quiet a little bit more. I hope she doesn’t hear anything. I hope she doesn’t notice anything.

“White Snake, contact us in the next 24 hours, over.”

Finally, I’ll just have to contact them in the next 24 hours or I will be labeled as fallen in battle.

That wouldn’t be so bad, if only this didn’t imply, that they will annihilate everybody until they find my body…

Why would I care about other people’s lives anyway? I can just let them die, it’s not my problem. Right?

I didn’t notice I was shivering until a hand gently falls on my head and makes it stop.

I look up and meet her tender smile.

“Poor girl, I’m sorry if I looked angry.”

Tears build up in my eyes and I lower my head so she doesn’t see them.

“I should have noticed you needed more than what I gave you. I thought that leaving you in the village was enough, that you would reconstruct in one night. It was naïve, sorry.”

Did she interpret my behavior as being terrorized from being scolded?

I’m fine actually… I’m… I’m fine…

The words can’t come out.

“I … I…” I blatantly try to say.

Why do I need to say anything?

I don’t have anything to say! I’m playing the mute!

“It’s okay.” She strikes my hair playfully. “Take your time.”

Bursting into tears for the first time of my life, the calm of the desert gives echo to my lament.

Taking me into her arms, I sob uncontrollably. The tears that I’ve been holding all this time are overflowing and it takes me long minutes before retaking control of my body.

When I can finally stop the hiccups, I stand back up and sneeze. My nose is stuffed with snot and I have nothing to blow it.

The girl notices and takes out a handkerchief. She blows my nose with a smile and wipes my face with her dupatta. After rearranging my hair, she stands back up and holds my hand.

“Can you walk?” She asks, softly.

I nod and we start moving.

We walk like this in silence for maybe an hour. The metal detector doesn’t seem to detect anything. And after a while, we decide to take a break and sit on the dune.

The girl shines brightly, with her blue eyes that match her earrings, and white hair that reflects the light. I try to find a way to tell her how ethereal she looks to me, but I can’t.

“By the way, what’s your name?” She finally breaks the silence.

With a hoarse voice, I finally pronounce, “Gini.”

She makes an ‘oh’ with her mouth and laughs. “Gini! That’s a beautiful name! It fits you well.”

Now, I can finally ask her.

‘How about you?’

Say it! Say it!

Ask her name!!

But the moment I reopen my mouth, detonations are heard.

Such awful timing!

We both turn around to find where they came from, but the sound originated from behind me, I heard it with acute precision.

“Nala…” The girl says, worried.

It was the sound of a rifle. An automatic, so a different model from Nali’s… So, it’s from them!

In a breath, I jump on my feet and grab Nali’s rifle that the girl kept lying next to her.

“Wait! You can’t go alone!” She shouts as she extends her hand to stop me, but I’m far already.

She jumps on her feet and runs behind me, but I’m much faster.

Ten minutes of sprint is enough to reach the place where Nala is lying. His forehead is bleeding but he doesn’t seem hit by a bullet. Maybe it grazed him.

From the next dune, I see a shadow moving.

Quickly, I use the dupatta to cover myself and lay on the sand, as flat as possible.

I cock the rifle and remove security.

I take a deep breath and aim at the moving shadow.

I wait … 3 … 2 … 1… And shoot in an expiration.

The detonation echoes for kilometers around and I hear the girl shout, “GINI!!”

Meanwhile the shadow I was aiming at falls on the sand, so I unveil myself and wait for the girl to come.

“What happened?!” She screams, breathless.

I point at Nala and her face turns white.

“NALA! ARE YOU OKAY?!” She panics, checking whether he’s injured anywhere else, but notices he’s only knocked out.

“Who did this?” She hisses.

I point at the dune with a finger, and her beautiful face darkens.

“You stay here. I’ll see what it was.” She orders.

I grab her dupatta and shake my head.

“I come.” I answer with determined eyes.

I see her frowning face fade out and she sighs. “I can’t refuse you anything.” She adds.

Thus, we walk together to the next dune, and find, as I expected, one of the Indian separatists who was looking for me, a deep wound in his chest.

I notice the girl’s face blemish, maybe it’s her first time she has seen so much blood. She looks like some fancy rich girl after all.

She approaches and puts two fingers under his wrist to make sure the man is dead, but he suddenly grabs her hand.

“You…” He pronounces. “Weren’t you wi-” His coughing cuts him.

“Why did you attack my friend?” The girl asks. She’s showing me her back so I can’t see which face she’s making, so I move a little on the side until I’m able to see the man’s face as well.

“It’s not you… It’s” His face deforms when he sees me and he tries to point at me.

I need to finish him before he says anything more.

I quickly raise the rifle and aim for his head.

It’s going to splash on the girl’s face a little bit, but it’s okay.

This was fun as long as it lasted, I’ll also kill the girl and her two friends when I’ll be done with this. I can’t leave any witness.

So, I prepare to detonate and yet…

A silver blade penetrates his throat.

A beautiful incurved dagger named the kirpan is held by none other than the dazzling girl under the moonlight.

Her mouth sharpens into a grin as she plunges the dagger deeper until all forms of light disappears from his eyes.

Confused, I lower my weapon and admire.

“This is for my friend, you bastard!” She smirks.

When she’s done, she carefully removes the kirpan and carefully cleans the blood with the same handkerchief she blew my nose with…

As she stands up, she slowly turns around to face me with a bright smile.

“Now, now, Gini, how about you tell me who you really are?”

Bringing the kipan to her mouth, she laughs, her face under the dazzling moon looking as stunning as ever.
