EPISODE 17: AGENT

Sheltering from the rain, my eyes fixed on the telescopic sight of my sniper rifle, a familiar voice comes into my headset. “L2, 99, 129, 47F, 20.”

I adjust my position and the focus of the lens according to the coded parameters I have received and search for my target again. “Negative.” I reply.

“L2, 99, 129, 58G, 3.”

I recalibrate and finally find an unnatural reflection of light coming from one of the windows of a building in my line of sight.

“Sierra 1 to Mike. Unnatural light spotted, 7 from left, 15 up. Over.”

“Roger that, Sierra 1. Keep an eye on that window as if it were your best friend’s apartment and your girlfriend was cucking you. Over.”

“How oddly explicit, Mike. Want to talk about it? Over.”

“No need, I had a feeling it might ring a bell with you. Over.”

“Oh, fuck off! What do you know, you motherfucker? Over.”

“You didn’t miss that time, make sure you do just as well now. Over.”

I bite my lip, pissed. Where did he find this information? It was over three years ago and I have changed identities four times since then!

I stretch my back until it cracks. Staying in this position for so long can only make my whole body ache, but I keep my eyes on the building, bringing my binoculars up to my face.

It takes only one minute for a helicopter to reach the building. Four people with rifles in their hands and helmets on their heads drop out of it in sync with the help of wires and penetrate the highest apartment from its window. On the other side of the z-axis, an armoured car stops on the street and blocks the way out. Four other people with the same attire jump out of it and rush inside. Two from the main entrance, two go all the way around to find a backway.

Thirty seconds later, the racket of a gunfight echoes, so I throw my binoculars to the side and put my face on the rifle.

My eye is ready to order my finger to press the trigger the moment it sees movement. At this point, I only have to trust my reflexes, because if I hesitate for a half second, the situation will look drastically different after all the time it takes for the bullet to travel that distance, and I will most likely miss the shot.

Finally, the window explodes, dense smoke bursting out of it. Instantly, I press the trigger and quickly change the parameters on my lens.

The infrared mode allows me to see a silhouette jump out of the window. I lower the rifle a few degrees and fire a second time.

The first shot hits the falling silhouette’s chest, the second hits the hand that was holding some object. The inert body is abruptly slowed down by the sprouting of a parachute in its back, and slowly falls on the armoured vehicle’s roof.

The ruckus made by the helicopter and the gunfight has been loud enough to notify the whole district, so the armed people rush down the apartment, secure the body and drive away. The helicopter had left the moment they had entered the building.

“Good job, Sierra 1. Over.”

I finally stretch my whole body and stand up. “No biggie. It was a piece of cake. Over.” I respond while beginning to fold my rifle and tripod into their suitcase.

“Did it remind you of the old days? Over.”

“Shut up or I’ll shut you up!”

I start to walk down the building, but a sudden chill runs through my body.

I have the sudden feeling the place is surrounded…

I rush to the window and lean my body against the wall, and peek at the street under the building.

“Sierra 1?” The voice in my earphone asks since I didn’t properly finish my statement, but I can’t respond now.

I carry the suitcase in a strap and rush to the staircase, where I hide myself.

I look back towards the window only to see it suddenly get blown up by a bald guy in a dark blue suit and bow tie, who most likely came from the rooftop with a similar technique to the people I was watching a few minutes ago, except with less professionalism and a visibly interesting sense of fashion.

“I’m in.” He announces. “It’s empty. They must have seen us. It’s always my fault. I know they can’t be far, stop shouting in my ear.”

His allies must be down there, my only way out is up.

I climb up the stairs as swiftly as I can and open the door that leads to the rooftop, where a black man dressed in the same dark blue suit as the other guy is standing. He turns around when he sees me and pulls an earphone out of his ear from which I can hear classical music being played loudly.

“Aren’t you going to hurt your ears?” I ask him, honestly worried.

“No problem.” He pulls a modern-looking crossbow out of his guitar case and fires bolts at me that I avoid by rolling to the side, “It’s the only thing that keeps me awake.”

I approach, hoping that he will be weaker in melee combat, but he swings the crossbow as a bladed weapon since its front is sharp like a razor.

Realizing that I won’t be able to take him down, and his partner is going to sandwich me, I run to the edge of the roof and jump to the next one while avoiding the crossbow bolts.

“Oh no … I missed… Too bad…” He mumbles, already out of sight.

I catch my breath while running down the stairs where a strangely tall silhouette blocks my way. Since this person is also dressed the same way, I must conclude that they are from the same group.

In the middle of the staircase, the tall, androgynous figure smirks, juggling with their pocket knife. “Good job ASCLEPIUS, I’ll treat you to some cakes.” The person laughs in their earphone, then speak to me. “What a nice little mouse you are, would you be interested in dinner, by any chance?”

“Sorry, I’m into women.” I shrug, but the person’s eyes roll and I can hear some unhinged laughter coming out of their earphone.

“I am a woman!” She responds, annoyed.

“My apologies, but you clearly aren’t my type either!”

“It’s fine if you prefer it the painful way.” She approaches me, knife in hand.

I can’t fight properly in such a narrow place; she’s clearly advantaged with her knife.

So, I turn around and start running back up, and the tall woman rushes behind me. “Come back here, you little bitch!” She catches up to me and yanks me backwards by the hair.

I fall over her body and we roll down the stairs we had just climbed up.

She curses, while I get back on my feet quicker and start running down, but she catches my leg midair and I fall on my face.

She pulls me up and prepares to stab me, but doing a headstand, I kick her and roll a few steps down.

My nose bleeding abundantly, I stagger while trying to stand up, and seeing the tall girl approach, I use the suitcase as a blunt weapon and smash her flank before jumping down, but I stumble and reach the first floor on all fours.

Running out of the building, I hear a gunshot and crouch. Realizing that I’ve been missed, I roll on the grass, when a car going towards me at full speed appears in my line of sight.

Ready to get hit, I cover my head with my arms, but the car drifts and stops perfectly, less than a metre away. The back door opens, and two familiar men order me to get in.

I jump inside the car that rapidly drives away and sigh. The guy who is driving the vehicle is one of my new comrades. The one on the passenger seat is none other than the man I was talking to earlier. Mike for M, aka Major. That’s how everybody calls him.

I am Sierra 1, for S1, aka SWAN.

“How did you know I was getting fucked?” I wipe my bloodied face with my sleeve.

Major hands me a tissue and adjusts the mirror to allow me to see my face and notice how much of a mess it is. It’s not only covered with blood, but also mud since I rolled in the dirt, and it takes a thorough cleaning before I’m able to see my freckles.

My hair is of deep crimson, like the blood that I wiped off my face, and my eyes are just slightly browner.

“You didn’t finish your message.” He responds softly.

I take a deep breath and sink deeper into the leather seat. “You truly are a bad motherfucker. Forcing a girl like me to do such dangerous work, only a bad motherfucker would do so.”

“Watch your language. What am I going to do if you’re the only one who disrespects me?” He seems to find it amusing.

“I don’t know, just throw me in the sewers where you found me, I guess.”

“That won’t do. Sewers aren’t a good place for a 16-year-old girl.”

I turn red from shame. I never mentioned my real age and always presented myself as an 18-year-old. Since I do look older than my age, it never failed to fool everyone. “How many things do you know, you motherfucker?!”

“I’ll tell you once you stop calling me like that.”

“No way I will. You like me too much, don’t you?”

“Maybe I do… You remind me of someone.”

I raise an eyebrow, slightly annoyed by the revelation that I’m not original enough.

“I bet that person didn’t call you a motherfucker, motherfucker.”

“They didn’t.” He laughs almost heartwarmingly.

“Well, they were wrong. You truly are a bad motherfucker, motherfucker.”

“FUCK!” I scream as I watch the car drive off.

“No way! I can’t believe SIRO-PI failed at killing one little girl in a closed space.”

“SHUT UP!”

“Damn, I didn’t do anything.”

“NO SHIT!”

“I’m sorry, Sis… I missed.”

“Don’t worry about it, ORPHEUS… You tried your best…”

This is so frustrating! We had finally found an isolated member of their specs ops groups … and she slips through our fingers!

“We can’t continue like this; did you see what that girl was able of?”

“No way, there was only the two of you in that staircase.”

“Well, I tell you she isn’t just a random girl.”

“We already knew that.”

“No, I mean, what the hell was that…? She was fighting like she didn’t care about her body. As if she didn’t feel any pain.”

“Do you think she took drugs?”

“That’s definitely an option.”

“Using meth is common among soldiers.”

“I didn’t expect to see the day where we’re fighting crystal meth buffed specs ops on this stupid hot and rainy island!” I kick a can that was lying on the ground. “I need the Banta to put at least five more teams on the job, or even ten! What the hell is he thinking?!”

“Don’t be angry, Sis… It’s not your fault… ASCLEPIUS’s tactic was flawed, that’s all…”

“OY, ORPHI! That’s rude and uncalled for!!”

“It’s nobody’s fault.”

My head cooling under the rain, I run a hand through my hair. “You’re right, HECTOR. It’s nobody’s fault. Let’s leave it at that, and I’ll try to contact the Banta again.”

“How about that cake you said you would treat me to?”

“Tch.” I click my tongue. “You don’t deserve it anymore.”

“Sis… I also want cake…”

“Fine.” I crack up. “Cakes for everybody. HECTOR, you’re in?”

“I’m always in when I’m not paying.”

“You’re one hell of a needy team, you know that?”

“Yes, but you like us like that, don’t you?” ASCLEPIUS’s teasing voice echoes both in my ear and in front of me. He walked out of his hidden position to meet with me under the rain. He waves at me like a child would.

I smile softly and nod. “Of course, I do.”
