“Remember, Maria, don’t show any signs of hesitation or fear,” Rasputina instructed her one last time. “Follow my orders exactly, got it?”

Maria nodded her head firmly. “Yes, big sister—I mean, Your Grace!”

“Good, you’re so much better than that ass kink-loving partner of mine.” She bent down to ruffle the hair on her head gently. “Let’s get that bag and get the hell out of this empire, alright?”

With her prep talk concluded, the pair strode over to the main gates leading to the grand palace.

“You two over there, what are you doing?” A soldier immediately came out of the palace guardhouse upon noticing their sudden presence. He held a lantern in one hand as he approached them warily, while the other hand gripped the pistol by his side. “Turn around immediately, no outsiders are allowed to enter through the palace gates!”

“Herr Oberleutnant!” Maria meekly raised her arm in the Königreich salute to the soldier. “Danke schön, thank you for going out of your way to greet Frau Kaiserin the Saintess of Kievsta! Can you please show us the way into the Königliches Schloss?”This is spoken entirely in German, but I was too lazy to translate everything heh.

“The Saintess?!” He stopped in his tracks and looked at the Saintess with wide reproachful eyes. “I didn’t hear any news about an official visit from the Königreich—”

“Rest easy, faithful soldier. I’m not here on an official visit to the empire,” Saintess Rasputina said in a calm yet warm voice. “I was on my way back to the port after visiting the Patriarch when I overheard the worrying state of Her Highness Princess Anastasia, so I decided to hurry here to visit His Majesty and offer my sincere prayers to the royal family.”

The soldier instantly straightened his back and clicked his heels before bowing. “P-please forgive my earlier rudeness! It’s an honour to have Your Grace here, I shall show you the way to His Majesty immediately!”

At his order, the other soldiers rushed to their posts and opened the wrought-iron gates for the unexpected visitors.

“That went surprisingly well…” Maria whispered in a small voice such that only Rasputina could hear her.

“They really must be desperate to not even check our documents,” the Saintess whispered back, “And I’m surprised you know the Königreich common language, actually. Even Theo can’t speak it well.”

She gave a slight smile. “My half-uncle was a oberstabsmajor in their army, so I have a vague understanding.”

“You seriously are smarter than you look, little miss…”

They were brought to the familiar heavy set doors and told to wait for His and Her Majesty to receive them. In less than five minutes, the butler opened the entrance doors and invited them to enter into the palace foyer, which was now devoid of people save for one weary but still dignified-looking figure.

“Queen Cetheri, thank you for having me tonight. Please pardon my sudden intrusion.” Saintess Rasputina bowed gracefully before Her Majesty. “This is my appointed acolyte, who is accompanying me on my visit to the empire these past few days.”

Maria quickly followed suit, lifting the hems of her skirt up slightly. “Pleased to meet Your Majesty, my humble name is Maria.”

Queen Cetheri merely acknowledged their greetings with a perfunctory bow. “I didn’t know the Saintess is currently residing in our territory, may I know the nature of your visit?”

“Maria, please pass Her Majesty the letter,” she calmly ordered before turning to Her Majesty. “This letter is a show of my sincere gratitude for honouring my impromptu visit to the Church for the purpose of cross-religion talks. Thanks to Your Majesty, the bilateral ties between the Church and the Kievsta is progressing smoothly as we speak.”

The Queen stared at the red seal of the envelope silently and accepted it. “I’ll pass on your message to His Majesty in a short while. The King is currently by Anastasia’s side in her bedroom; please follow me to her chambers upstairs.”

Knocking on the oakwood door leading to the princess’ chambers, Queen Cetheri pushed it open gently and invited the pair to enter the dimly-lit room. “Please pray for my daughter’s recovery, Saintess. I’ll be outside if you need me.”

“I will.” Rasputina smiled kindly and gave a slight bow. “Please don’t fret about Her Highness, I shall cure her of her malaise now.”

King Cetheri, who had been sitting on a chair by Princess Anastasia’s bed, stood to his feet in an instant. “Frau Kaiserin, ist das wahr?”

“?” She shot a pleading glance at Maria, who quickly whispered, “His Majesty is asking if you can really do it.”

“Ah, there’s no need to speak in the Königreich language, Your Majesty. The empire’s language is perfectly fine for our conversations,” Rasputina said politely. “And as for your question, I can’t guarantee you any results, but I promise Your Majesty that I can help ease Her Highness’ symptoms.”

“I-I see, I apologise for my earlier outburst.” King Cetheri glanced at the bed before returning his solemn gaze at the Saintess. “Saintess, I can’t express my gratitude enough to have you visit us. Please, I’ll do anything for you to cure my daughter! S-she has been unresponsive for two days now, I can’t—”

“Your Majesty, rest be assured I shall do my best. I also wish for the princess’ good health, after all.” She bowed and gestured at the door. “I deeply apologise, but I need everyone in this room to evacuate for me to perform a healing ritual on Her Highness. Please understand my well intentions.”

King Cetheri immediately ordered all guards to follow him out of the chamber, and closed the door behind him.

Hearing their fading footsteps, Maria finally collapsed onto the ground in exhaustion. “O…oh my…I can’t believe we actually made it this far, big sister Xavier!”

The Saintess herself was also heaving a sigh of relief as she took her veil off and tossed it on the floor. “I sure hope His Majesty doesn’t read the letter anytime soon. It seems like the King and the (real) Saintess are close, so we’re definitely dead if he opens that envelope.”

Maria picked herself up and slowly approached the bed where Princess Anastasia was lying down. “So this is what Her Highness looks like in person…she’s far more gorgeous than I thought, wow.”

Rasputina joined Maria’s side and gazed upon the unconscious princess. Her body was so still it was as though she had already died; yet, the almost imperceptible rise and fall of her breast indicated she was alive. Her rose-coloured hair was neatly arranged around her head and neck, adorning the serene smile on her beautiful face. Her midnight-blue gown on the night of the ceremony had been replaced with a thin modest linen nightgown that loosely hugged her slender, almost frail-looking figure.

“How are you going to wake Her Highness up?” Maria asked quietly. “D-do you really know a healing ritual to cure her?”

“My healing ritual is for you to crawl under her bed and imitate her voice, while I convince the King and Queen that the princess had just awakened and is too weak to meet them.”

“Are you sure that will work?” Her expressive eyes showed great doubt. “They seem very desperate to see Her Highness.”

“I know, let me think first.” Rasputina breathed in to calm her nerves and leaned over Princess Anastasia’s face. “...Your Highness, we meet again.”

There was no response from her still, unmoving lips.

The Saintess reached out and gently brushed her fringes away from her forehead; with a pensive smile, she drew the silver floral hairpin out and placed it in her cold hand.

“I’m returning this to you, alright? You don’t need to act anymore, I stole the Crown Jewels successfully thanks to you,” she said softly. Then with a sigh, she shook her head and slapped the princess across her cheek with a bit of force. “Hey, I need to get out of here alive—preferably ten thousand doubloons richer, so are you going to wake up or not?”

“H-hold on, there’s no need to resort to violence!” Maria whispered frantically.

“Look, little miss, either she wakes up before the King suspects us or we both are seeing the guillotine tomorrow,” Rasputina huffed. “What do they always do in fairytales again? Kiss the sleeping beauty or something, right?”

“But that’s just a fairytale—n-no, big sister, you can’t do that!!”

“Sorry, these are desperate times.” Ignoring Maria’s quiet protests, the Saintess crawled onto the princess’ bed and leaned in to seal her lips against hers.

“Now you’ve done it…” Maria turned around to mutter, unable to bear with the sight before her innocent eyes.

Anastasia’s lips were cold as ice, offering no warmth at all upon contact; Rasputina frowned and pressed her hand against her weakly beating chest, making sure she wasn’t actually engaging in necrophilia.

“Well, that was worth a shot, I guess…” Heaving a resigned sigh, she was about to tell Maria to hightail it out of the palace when she felt a sudden movement brushed against her sides.

“M-Maria, Maria! Help me!” she shouted in fright, scrambling out of the bed in a haste. “S-s-something’s moving under the sheets!”

“Eh?!” Maria spun around and the two stared at the princess’ bed in trepidation.

“...y…” Anastasia’s lips trembled.

They didn’t dare to speak; their eyes were now riveted to her face, which was twitching ever so slightly.

Her eyelids slowly fluttered open, revealing her bleary lilac eyes. With a soft groan, she pulled herself to an upright position on her bed and glanced around before meeting their shocked gazes.

“...yu…” Anastasia rubbed her eyes and blinked a few times. “...yume desu ka…?”Japanese?
