By sundown, Theo had finished forging the seals, while Maria was done applying and touching up the makeup of their fake Saintess.
“A-hem-hem!” Rasputina cleared her throat and adjusted her voice to sound higher and more demure. “Let’s go, darlings. The King is awaiting our presence.”
“Darlings?” Theo muttered as he sealed the fake letter in an official-looking envelope. “Also, we haven’t had our dinner yet—”
As if on cue, a knock on their door interrupted their conversation.
“Babushka, you’re in this with us too?” Theo joked while opening the door for the innkeeper.
“Huh? What did you say?” Granny made a gesture of waving her hand over her ear. “I have some leftovers from lunch today, do you want a pot of stew?”
“Oh, thanks.”
“Sorry? You’re speaking too softly, young man.”
“Babushka, thanks for the dinner!” Theo hollered at the top of his lungs.
“There’s no need to scream, I’m not deaf,” Granny mumbled. She caught sight of the other two people in the room and smiled. “You sweethearts must be friends of this young man, ah…welcome to my humble inn, please make yourselves at home.”
Maria and Rasputina thanked her loudly for her hospitality, and Theo brought the small clay pot to the dressing table after closing the door back shut.
“Smells like chicken mushroom to me,” he said after removing the lid and inhaling a whiff. “Come on guys, let’s dig in.”
Maria went down to the kitchen and brought up three plates, cutlery and a ladle for everyone. Theo gave her a generous scoop of the stew, one mid-sized scoop for himself and the remainder which couldn’t fill half the ladle was given to an annoyed Rasputina.
“The Saintess can’t get too fat, you know.”
“...”
It was just a simple chicken mushroom stew cooked in a pan and left to cool for too long, but since it was free of charge, the three digged in and savoured every last ingredient on their plates. In a matter of minutes, everything was wiped clean and the two girls returned the plates and cutlery to the kitchen while Theo looked for Granny to give back the pot.
“How was the stew I made?” Granny asked with a kind smile. “I hope it wasn’t too cold.”
“It was delicious,” they said in unison.
“Sorry, I didn’t catch that, what?”
“Granny, your stew was delicioussss-a!” Maria shouted at the top of her lungs.
“Ah, I see, I see. Thank you, young miss.”
“Babushka, can we borrow your cart?” Theo asked, not forgetting to raise his voice loudly. “We’re going to the capital now.”

“This late? It must be something urgent, right?” Granny glanced out of the window at the twilight sky. “Do be careful ah, young man.”
The wooden cart was originally intended to transport bales of hay from the fields to the stable belonging to the inn, so it wasn’t designed with passenger comfort in mind. As a result, Saintess Rasputina and her poor delegate Maria were jostled about roughly whenever the cart bounced over the smallest pothole on the road.
“Aren’t you a smartass?” Rasputina complained to Theo, who was in the driver’s seat, in a disgruntled voice as they bumped up and down relentlessly. “Look, there’s bits of hay getting stuck in the folds of my dress now!”
“Shut up, will you?” Theo snapped, his eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and some other emotion she couldn’t discern. “You’re not the one getting hay sticking into their ass hole here.”
Maria, who was wearing a plain white dress to match with the Saintess’ outfit, giggled upon hearing his remark. “Big brother Theo, you must really have an ass kink.”
“...”
The two girls laughed a little too loudly for his liking, so he purposefully drove the cart over the large pothole in the road and smirked to himself when he heard their cries of rage.
Theo stopped the cart in a quiet alleyway close to the grand palace grounds.
At this time of the night, the myriad maze-like streets of the capital were ablaze with candlelights. The air was warm; the windows of the brick-and-stone apartments lining the cobblestone roads were mostly wide open, and the pubs were especially crowded and rowdy. Horse-drawn trams packed with the working class and carriages of the wealthy rattled past one another along the main street. Truly the capital was a city of glitz and glamour that was bursting with nightlife.
Yet only a sliver of the city’s glow reached deep into the back alleys; the still air lingering around them had a sultry mysteriousness to it, creeping into their heads and tainting their thoughts with whispers of sin.
In the near pitch-black darkness, Theo struck a single match against the brick wall and lit the small handheld lantern by his side. “I’ll wait here until the lantern burns out.”
“Aw, brother, don’t be so cold,” Rasputina whispered in a titillating voice. “Aren’t you going to at least wish us good luck?”
“...” He sighed and shook his head. “Just so you know, I still think you’re suicidal for following this plan. You’re just doing this out of your own greed, and you of all people should know that best.” He turned to Maria. “Please reconsider doing this, Maria. You don’t have to follow big bro—sister here to your death, you know?”
Rasputina kept silent while they waited for the girl to say something.
“I don’t have anything to look forward to in my insignificant life, big brother Theo,” Maria finally replied, smiling brightly. “If you ask me to choose between this and selling odds and ends on the streets till I’m old, I would choose to follow big sister. This is also my thanks to her for helping me in the main square that day.”
Rasputina gave her a surprised yet contented smile. “Maria, you…”
Theo didn’t say anything, but he hung the burning lantern by the side of the cart and motioned for them to go.
