Chapter 2: Chapter 2 – The Child of Revenge

“Vlad, run!” A man shouted while putting a sword-shaped pendant on the hands of a young man. “Take this and run! Leave this place! You must not lose this pendant! Understood!?”

“But what about you, father!? And what about mom and sister!?”

“I’m injured. I will be unable to escape. Go! I will distract them!”

“Father!”

“Go! Protect the pendant! Remember, you must avenge us!”

The young man bit his lips and nodded. He then turned around, got on a horse, and rode it away.

His vision was blurry due to the tears, but even so, he did not stop. He just wiped them off half-heartedly and focused on escaping.

Behind him, he could hear the noise of swords clashing and the groans and screams of pain from people being killed. A cloud of smoke rose further behind, coming from a mansion burning in flames.

That mansion was his home, and now, it was no more.

Together with his family.

He did not understand what was happening. He only knew that a group of masked men had invaded his family’s state, killing all the people inside and burning the place down.

He saw his big brother dying in front of him after being stabbed while trying to defend him. His grandfather was killed too after he killed several of the assailants. It was the same for several of his uncles and aunts.

He did not see his mother and sister die, but his father had gone for them, only to return alone and injured.

Although he did not want to admit it, he knew that they were most likely dead too.

Perhaps, he was the only one alive.

“… I must avenge them… I must…”

The young man rode the horse for a long time, even when the horse was about to collapse. His goal was the manors close to his family’s manor. That was his only hope of survival.

At some point in time, the sounds of battle and screams of pain faded away, disappearing completely.

But that only made the young man’s despair greater. He knew that it meant that everybody else was dead.

His father, his mother, his brother, and his sister.

They had been killed.

“… I must kill them.”

Hatred appeared in his eyes, making them turn blood red. He had never felt so much hatred in his life.

Just then, a warning of danger rang in his mind.

Instinctively, he yanked the horse aside.

However, it was useless.

The arrow was so fast that he was unable to avoid it.

It easily pierced his back, perforating his right lung.

“Ugh.”

The young man fell from the horse and rolled on the ground. Blood flowed out of his lips mixed with pieces of flesh as the horse ran away in fright.

Coughing, he tried to drag his body away, but he felt himself slowly losing strength.

Soon, he heard the sound of horse hooves and footsteps approaching.

“A small rat almost escaped. We were lucky to catch it.”

The young man’s eyes opened wide. He recognized that voice.

It was the voice of the patriarch of one of the noble families allied with his family.

The voice of the father of his fiancée.

The young man’s eyes became bloodshot. They were filled with hatred, rage, and desire for revenge.

However, his fading strength made him understand that his death was approaching.

With his last strength, he grabbed the pendant and brought it to his mouth, swallowing it decisively despite the pain.

Soon, he felt someone pulling him up brusquely. It was a masked man with a name tattooed on his right hand, Marie.

The masked man dragged him towards a man seated on a horse.

“… Y… Y… Yo… u…!!!”

“Oh? So it’s little Vlad, huh.” The man in the horse said with a sigh. “My daughter will be sad if she learns about this. Give him a quick death.”

“Understood.”

 The next instant, Vlad felt a cold metal stabbing his abdomen, followed by another stab in his heart.

In his fading vision, he engraved the scene before his eyes.

‘Revenge…’ That was the only thought in his mind.

“Is the pendant on him?” The man in the horse asked.

“It’s not.”

“A shame. Throw him into the river. I don’t want my daughter to see his dead body.”

“Very well.”

Vlad then felt his body being dragged away before a cold and wet feeling filled him.

‘So it’s death, huh.’ He thought to himself and closed his eyes.

One hour passed, followed by another, and another.

Vlad’s body was dragged down by the river, his life having left him completely.

However, although his body was dead, his soul refused to leave.

It was tied to his body by a powerful resentment. Hatred and rage so powerful that they did not allow his soul to dissipate.

Unfortunately, it did not change anything. Without a body, a soul was almost useless. Even in the best-case scenery, it could only become a resentful spirit, conscienceless and filled with hostility toward all living beings.

But then, a miracle happened.

All of sudden, a drop of blood broke through space, appearing right above Vlad’s dead body.

Countless magical characters flashed continuously inside the drop of blood. Eventually, they formed words in an idiom that did not exist in this world.

[Bloodline compatibility confirmed.] 

[Soul compatibility confirmed.]

[Body potential confirmed.]

[Found that this body is an excellent host. Possibility of integration, 97%]

[Possibility of integration meeting the necessary requirements.]

[Starting integration process.]

[Process started.]

The drop of blood entered Vlad’s body. It released an enormous amount of energy, healing every one of Vlad's injuries and at the same time, reforming his body and turning it into something beyond human.

Eventually, the process ended with Vlad’s body completely healed.

His wounds had disappeared, leaving behind a spotless skin as white as snow.

Then, several characters appeared in Vlad’s mind.
