When they stepped out, Jake could feel his eyes widen. As he looked at the city, dread settled at the bottom of his stomach.
The beautiful city of New York, once the liveliest city on the planet was now a barren wasteland.
He felt Zoe tremble at the sight as her legs gave out and she fell into his arms. As he held her against himself, he heard her murmur.
“What? But… how?” Zoe asked in a low voice, and for once, Jake was completely out of words. He didn’t know what to say to comfort the woman in his arms.
Jake hugged her tighter and patted her back comfortingly. As he smelled the acrid smell of the once beautiful city, he had only one thought. ’What the fuck happened here?’
He stepped back into the mansion, Zoe still firmly wrapped in his arms. He sat her down on the sofa and poured her a glass of water, all the while rubbing her back comfortingly.
“Is everything alright?” Jake heard Liam ask. Jake knew he was whipping up the dinner but he didn’t notice the old man come over to him.
“No,” Jake answered in a miserable voice. “Outside… the city is…” He paused, unable to explain what he saw. “I think you should see it for yourself.” he finally said, gesturing to the door to the alley.
Liam swiftly moved to the door and opened it. He stood there for a minute, calmly taking it all in.
“I had hoped that you wouldn’t see such a sight so soon,” he finally said, turning around to face them both. “But it’s one of the consequences when someone meddles in time and tries to change too much.”
Jake’s eyes widened.
“You mean this sort of thing is common?” he exclaimed.
Liam shook his head. “Not exactly common but it happens often enough that it can’t be called rare,” he answered sadly.
“But I thought that the timeline changes once the person has traveled to the past?” Zoe asked.
Liam nodded. “Yes, that would be much simpler, wouldn’t it? You could just decide what changes to keep and what to remove?” he asked rhetorically.
He looked at them for a few seconds. “Unfortunately, what happens is, that when someone goes back to the past, they don’t change the timeline at once. Every time they make a decision, the timeline changes to reflect it.”
Jake and Zoe looked at him, confused.
Seeing their faces, he decided to elaborate. “When Dr. Conners went to the past, his decision might have been to conquer the world through money and technological advancements. So, the timeline changed to show that. Then, he might have decided it was taking too much time or maybe one country was resisting change and ordered an attack, which lead to what you saw outside,” he completed.
“So this isn’t the final result of Dr. Conners’ timeline?” Jake asked.
Liam shook his head. “It’s impossible to say if this is the final result. Maybe he can take a decision that will revert the world into its previous state. Maybe it’ll be better than that. Or maybe it’ll be so bad that the very air we breathe will turn poisonous.”
Both the new members of Time Knights stared at him in horror.
“Perhaps it’s a good thing you saw this. This situation is why we don’t let someone go to the past. Maybe this will help you understand the consequences of failing.” Liam concluded.
Both Jake and Zoe stared at him.
“Come and have dinner. Take the night to unwind and rest.” Liam said. “By the time you wake up tomorrow, I’ll have all the preparations done.”

With that final statement, he turned and moved towards the dining table, with Zoe trailing after him and Jake following behind quietly.

After a simple dinner of casserole chicken and mashed potatoes, both the younger knights wished Liam good night and moved to their bedroom. As they changed into their night clothes they were deep in their thoughts.
When they finally settled in their bed, side by side, Zoe called out to him.
“Jake?” She called out to him. “Are you asleep?”
Jake turned to face her and found himself looking at the copper locks of her hair at the back of her neck.
“No,” he answered. “You can’t sleep either?”
“No,” she replied back in a sorrowful voice. “I keep thinking about the wasteland we saw.”
Hearing the pain in her voice broke his heart. He pushed his chest against her back and wrapped his arm around her waist comfortingly.
“So do I,” He admitted. “But we have a way to stop this, and we will stop this.”
Jake was surprised to hear the conviction in his voice. And he meant it too. He knew he would do his best to take the world back to its natural order.
“And no matter what,” he continued. “I will be beside you, always.”
“I know,” Zoe answered, as she pressed back further into him.
She turned back to look at him and Jake was surprised by the depth of emotion in her eyes. He almost knew what she was going to say before she said,
“And I love you for it.” She finally finished in a small voice and closed her beautiful eyes as if she was embarrassed.
Jake wasn’t surprised at hearing that. They had been together for a lot of cycles and he would be lying if he said he didn’t feel the same. But he was very happy to hear her say that.
He noticed Zoe had opened her eyes and was looking into his. It looked like he spent a long time in his thoughts. He smiled brightly and softly kissed her on her lips.
“I love you too,” he finally answered, resting his forehead gently on hers.
Her smile at his words could outshine the light of the sun as she leaned forward to kiss him passionately and burrowed her body in his.
His one hand went straight to her hair while the other sank into her thigh. Her rock-hard nipples poked his chest sharply and sent the tension straight to his cock.
