Jake finally registered the pain in his knuckles. His fists were covered in small cuts and it looked like he had gone boxing with a mirror. ‘It looks like going to town on the man’s face wasn’t the wisest idea,’ he thought wryly.

He looked around the room. For a room where a fight to death took place, it looked surprisingly clean. Well, except on the side where the fight actually took place.

‘Looks like the Tzar will have to replace the carpets,’ Jake chuckled to himself.

He was lucky that the walls were thick and no one heard anything. He feared the ruckus would cause Dr. Conners to come out of his room to check on the man. And thank god for that. Otherwise, he wasn’t sure he would be able to take on the two of them. Even if Dr. Conners was an old man, he was still a military scientist and while no trouble on his own, would definitely have been able to aid the soldier. Now, all he had to do was deal with Dr. Conners.

Jake entered Dr. Conners’ room and looked around. He was still working on the battle plans. Jake sighed. One more thing to do. He would have to destroy the battle plans before he left for good.

“Dr. Conners!” Jake called out to the old man. He didn’t get a reply. The man was standing in front of a map, probably planning one of the upcoming battles.

“Dr. Aleksei Conners!” Jake said louder, his voice filled with authority. The man jumped, suddenly spooked by the loud noise. He turned back around, to give whoever interrupted him a piece of his mind but when he saw Jake’s ruffled state, he was shocked.

“Who the fuck are you?” the old man growled.

Jake simply smiled, enjoying the man’s ignorance.

“Why I’m just the person who picks up the laundry,” Jake replied in a sarcastic tone.

“Stop fucking with me! I asked who the fuck are you?”

Jake sighed. “I am your reckoning, Dr. Conners. After all, you didn’t really think that you could travel through time without any consequences, did you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” the man replied, panic seeping into his voice.

“Don’t you, Aleksei? You don’t mind if I call you Aleksei, do you?” Jake continued forward, without waiting for Dr. Conners to respond. “Good. As I was saying Aleksei, are you sure you don’t know what I’m talking about? You absolutely did not come from the future with the weapons and technology of that era to win the world war for Russia?” Jake asked with a cocked eyebrow.

“How do you know that?” the old man asked, his voice shaking.

“Ah, I did not introduce myself, did I?” Jake asked rhetorically. “My name is Jake, and I am a Time Knight.”

“What the fuck is a TIme Knight?” Aleksei asked incredulously.

“Huh, I suppose you can think of us as the time police. Whenever people like you screw up the future, we have to come and clean up your messes.”

“Screw up the future?” the man repeated, indignant. “I am saving the future! The world is a mess! In 2070, there’s a shortage of food. The water is polluted. The air is so bad you can’t even see stars with the naked eye! My plan will save the world. When Russia wins and becomes the superpower, we’ll put a stop to wars. The thousands of tons of crude oil and natural gases that were wasted to kill and destroy will be put to better use. The great minds will be developing technology to colonize space, rather than technology for mass destruction and genocide!” the man ended his speech passionately. Jake didn’t know what to think. The man’s ideas were sound and his reasons were even better. Yet, he had seen New York become a barren wasteland. Billions of people were killed, and all because of the man in front of him. His intentions might be good and pure but then, the path to hell is paved with good intentions, in this case, literally.

“Unfortunately, your plan didn’t come to fruition as you wanted,” Jake started. “I live in New York in 2007 and after your time traveling adventure, the city that once housed eight million people is now little more than a barren wasteland. Your plan caused genocide. Do you say Earth was being

destroyed in the year 2070? Well, you brought that destruction around 60 years earlier!” Jake finished, his voice rising with each work, till he was yelling the final works at the old man.

The scientist stared at Jake in stunned silence, still absorbing his words, trying to comprehend the damage his actions caused.

“Impossible!” the man finally spat out. “I have accounted for every possible variable! There’s no way this leads to the destruction of the planet!”

Jake shrugged.

“Don’t know what to tell you, doc. I saw the wasteland with my own eyes.” When Jake had thought of Aleksei Conners, he was a villain who destroyed that world in his hunger for power. And yet, the man in front of him was very far from what he had thought. He was not some criminal mastermind or some insane genius, he was just a man brought down by the circumstances. He saw his world being destroyed and took the only possible solution.

The doctor kept mumbling to himself for a few minutes, acting insane, before his eyes suddenly brightened.

“But you’re here now! You can tell us where we made the mistakes so that we can fix them. We can save the world together.” Dr. Conners's voice had gained a hysterical note and by the end, his face was almost fanatical. “Yes! Tell me what happened and I will fix it!”

Jake was getting worried about his behavior. “I don’t know doc.”

Dr. Conners paused. “What do you mean you don’t know? You said you’ve seen the wasteland!”

“Oh I’ve seen the wasteland, but I don’t know what happened. You see, my team and I, live in a separate time loop, that’s entirely disconnected from the reality. So while I saw what happened, all I know is that it happened, and you caused it!”

The man growled. “Then if you aren’t here to help me, what the fuck are you here for?”

Jake smiled. “Why Aleksei, I thought it would be obvious. I’m here to kill you, of course!”
