Dr. Conners spluttered in indignance. “Kill me! How dare you!”
“How dare I?” Jake retorted.” I’m not the one who screwed up the timeline! And I’m definitely not the one who triggered the apocalypse!”
“Well, you still can’t kill me. I…I have an army with me!” he shouted. Yet, his words reeked of desperation. He was a man out of options and he knew it. He was just trying to delay the inevitable.
Jake laughed.
“Oh Aleksei, I came to this timeline after you. And that means I had all the time to research you and prepare for this mission that I needed.” His laughter finally subsided. “That means I know everything about you and your soldiers. I know your routines, your habits, and your technology. That means that I know that at this very moment, your soldiers are on the other side of the castle, finishing up their drills. And by the time they get back… well, I don’t exactly need to spell out what they’ll find, now do I?”
The blood drained out of the old man’s face as the realization settled in. He was all alone and he was going to die.
The scientist's eyes flittered over the room, as he searched around desperately for anything that could help him. Finally, his eyes found the door and he lunged towards it, trying to escape the man who promised certain death.
Unfortunately for Dr. Conners, Jake was a lot faster than him, and by the time the older man had reached the door, Jake had already shut it.
Jake sighed. “ You know Aleksei, I had really hoped you wouldn’t fight and simply give up after I told you the consequences of your actions. But it’s clear that you haven’t repented for them.”
Dr. Conners didn’t seem to be listening. Instead, he started calling out.
“Help! Anyone?” he shouted.
“There’s no help coming Aleksei. The guard outside is dead and the nearest guards are too far away to hear anything from these thick walls.”
Of course, Dr. Conners didn’t listen and instead kept shouting for someone to help him.
“Alright, that’s it. Let’s get this over with,” and saying that Jake took out his dagger and lunged toward the other man. He wrapped his hand around Dr. Conners's neck and moved his dagger closer to the man’s heart.
“Please,” the man begged for his life. “Please don’t kill me.” His eyes suddenly widened. “If you let me live I’ll tell you where the weapons are.” he offered desperately.

Jake simply smiled. “Didn’t I just tell you we researched you? That we know everything there is to know about you? What makes you think we don’t know where you kept your weapons?” Jake suddenly cocked an eyebrow and raised his head sideways, as if listening to a sound far away. “Also, I think I hear someone in the armory. I hope there isn’t something important in there,” he teased the man ruthlessly.
And at that very moment, there was a loud explosion coming from the direction where both the men knew the armory to be in. Both their eyes widened. Dr. Conners’s in shock and Jake’s because that explosion couldn’t have been timed more perfectly.
And more importantly, that was the signal for him to make use of the distraction Zoe caused and make his back to the meeting point.
“Well, that’s my cue, doc,” and with that Jake brought his down to the man’s heart, saving the timeline, at least for the time being.

Jake quickly made his way to the soldiers’ rooms and changed into the soldier’s uniform. He used some water from a nearby vase to wipe the blood off his hands and face and ignoring the body lying on the floor, made his way to the halls.
The halls, as they had predicted, were empty. No doubt everyone was running towards the sound of the explosion.
Jake always wondered about why humans did that. Why go to something that has probably already been destroyed and leave everything else unguarded? He shrugged mentally. ‘Good for me,’ he thought.
He quickly made his way to the meeting point and it didn’t take long because there were no checkpoints to stop him and ask where he was going. Jake had expected that most of the guards would be running toward the explosion but he did not expect to find the whole route empty.
He soon reached their designated point, the servant entrance. They were going to quickly leave the Palace using that path and make their way to the exit window location.
He waited for Zoe anxiously, wondering if she was fine. Since all the guards had gone towards the explosion, Zoe had probably come across every single one of them. He just hoped that no one stopped her to ask any questions.
The guards outside were going to form a perimeter and every second that she was late meant that the perimeter would get tighter and their chances of escaping unscathed would go down. He just hoped that Zoe would soon reach the meeting point.
