Sa Lei did not do anything improper except carry Qin Fei (in his arms) back to the tent and use something dark to apply it on his injured legs. However Qin Fei felt as if he was sitting on pins and needles. Both of Sa Lei’s large and calloused hands gently scraping all over his bare skin unexpectedly, brought him some kind of unexplained shudder. He couldn’t help the goose bumps that sprang up all over his entire body, even when Sa Lei was treating a tiny wound on his thigh, Qin Fei had to clench his teeth firmly, only then he could hold back the moan that came to his lips.

As he helplessly watched the medicine finish being applied, it was unexpectedly more tiring than climbing a mountain all day. Qin Fei sighed quietly in relief. When he looked up, he saw Sa Lei staring at his leather skirt with keen and sparkling eyes. To be precise, Sa Lei was staring at the beneath of his leather skirt. Enraged and ashamed by it, Qin Fei suddenly lifted one of his legs and kicked Sa Lei who was crouching in front of him, right in the chest. Sa Lei was completely absorbed by the view under the skirt and was completely unprepared. The kick was so solid that he immediately fell to the ground.

Sa Lei looked at Qin Fei whose face turned red as he stared at him angrily, the corner of Sa Lei’s mouth cracked a smile and pointed at the beneath of his skirt and said, “It is very energetic.”

“Go away! damn it…” The tribe’s camp suddenly resounded with Qin Fei’s angry roar.

When it was time to eat, Qin Fei was still foaming with rage while Sa Lei was all smiles. The clansmen dug out leaf-wrapped roasted yam (sweet potato) from under the fire. The sweet and rich aroma spread. The broth with the sweet potatoes on it was also less fishy than usual and became less unpalatable.

From that group of children, Qin Fei took notice of a dark little thin boy who sat very quietly by Ruma’s side. With his withered yellow hair and dull look, it was as if he was straight out of a poor African child. He sat quietly while the other children grabbed the sweet potatoes, never taking it himself unless Ruma handed it to him. He was also quiet when he ate. In fact, Qin Fei had seen the boy twice, both times from a distance, when he saw him entering and leaving from Ruma’s tent.

He looked at the package of roasted sweet potatoes that was placed next to his lap, wrapped in the large leaves of the plant. It had been left by Sa Lei specifically for Qin Fei and was also the reward he had won for finding the food. Although sweet potato was not a rare thing, it was considered delicious here. Qin Fei sighed before he picked up the packet of roasted sweet potatoes. From behind, he bypassed the people gathered around the fire and moved slowly up next to Ruma. The little boy looked at Qin Fei in surprise since he had slowly come up to him. He thought that he probably wanted to talk to Ruma so he was about to move his body away but Qin Fei pulled him back, his tiny arms trembling.

Seeing that he was nervous, Qin Fei hurriedly said, “Don’t be afraid! I’m just going to give you something.”

As he said that, Qin Fei shoved that bundle of roasted sweet potatoes to the little boy. The little boy looked at Qin Fei with his whole face full of horror while the noisy crowd around him was suddenly dead silent. As Qin Fei wondered and didn’t understand why, a roar came from behind him. Qin Fei was taken aback as he turned back to see Sa Lei glaring angrily at him. This was the first time Qin Fei had seen such a Sa Lei, so subconsciously, he felt in danger and tried to avoid it.

Like a furious wild beast, Sa Lei took a few steps to reach Qin Fei. Although Qin Fei did not know why Sa Lei was so angry, that huge slap palm which came at him made him close his eyes in fear.

The expected pain did not happen but the muffled sound of something hitting the ground was heard. Qin Fei opened his eyes to see the packet of roasted sweet potatoes that he had handed over to the young boy scattered on the floor. Sa Lei glared angrily at the baked sweet potatoes that had fallen to the ground and ruthlessly stomped on it a few times. The little boy on the other hand, had an aggrieved look on his face and was being shielded by Ruma Priest.

Sa Lei seemed to have finished venting his anger and gave Qin Fei a cold look as he walked towards his tent. Behind them, the people of the tribe fell silent like cicadas in winter and dispersed quietly. The little boy behind Ruma’s priest, pouting his mouth and felt wronged as he ran off alone. The only sound left in the air was Ruma’s low sigh.

Qin Fei was confused by this series of inexplicable events and was unable to return to his normal state for quite a while. Seeing how miserable the formerly lively ‘evening bonfire party’ had become, he cursed angrily and said, “Why on earth is this Sa Lei suddenly gone mad about?”

Ruma patted him on the shoulder and told him in detail what had happened.

Sa Lei, who had suddenly gone mad, was the male protagonist of the story. The story was very dog blood (melodramatic), a very sad and tragic one. Nine years ago, Sa Lei already had a mate, a relatively beautiful female, get through from a massive food trade. As the son of the previous chief and the bravest warrior of the younger generation of the tribe, Sa Lei was counted as the person who was given some special privileges. The special treatment was the priority to mate especially if the other party was a strong, healthy and beautiful female. This way there would be less danger during childbirth and the chances of getting a healthy offspring were also high. Just six months after the females arrived at the tribe, a famine struck the tribe and almost all the males of the tribe were sent out on hunting trips, leaving the tribe with only the old people, the females and the children.

Just like this a misfortune struck when a migrating tribe arrived there by chance and attacked the defenceless tribe in order to obtain more females. Although the males who had been out hunting returned one after another to rescue them, they were still able to take several females, among them was Sa Lei’s wife.

Sa Lei who rushed back home was between grief and anger, not only his mother died in this war but his wife also had been taken away from him. In a fit of rage, Sa Lei took the males of his tribe and pursued that tribe. After a hand to hand battle, he retrieved all the females of his tribe. Unfortunately, Sa Lei’s wife had been forcibly mated by that tribe’s male for three days. Soon after she returned to their tribe, she became pregnant.

In this period of time, the tribe had no way to abort the child and so this pregnant female was the evidence of Sa Lei’s disgrace; the poor woman gave birth to her child amidst the peculiar looks from the people of the tribe, not long after that, she fell ill and died. Therefore this child too would have died early if it had not been for Ruma’s insistence. There was a reason for Ruma’s persistence; according to his calculations, the child should have been Sa Lei’s. But Sa Lei, because of the humiliation, had always firmly believed that it was the sinful child of his enemy. So today Qin Fei took the food that Sa Lei had rewarded him and gave it to the bastard son of his enemy, in Sa Lei’s eyes, it was the same as a mere humiliation for him.

Translator’s Note:

便宜儿子 literally mean the cheap son or the convenient son, but actually it has quite confusing meaning  The example I found in the internet is cheap dad. It means picking up someone else’s, so a woman is pregnant but her husband doesn’t want her, someone else wants her and the baby is with him so he’s the cheap dad… But in this case, the kid is actually Sa Lei’s so the woman is pregnant and having an affair, Sa Lei as his husband couldn’t be nice to his own kid for a reason that will be explained in the next chapter which is quite heartbreaking and understanding if you are in Sa Lei’s position. The kid is still considered living in the same tribe of Sa Lei and under his protection, so that’s why the kid here is the cheap son.

Just ignored this note if it’s not interesting or too confusing (。>﹏<。)
