Chapter 1:
Landfall
THE MOTORBOAT’S ENGINE ROARED, leaving all of us aboard partially deaf. The only thing we could do was observe the land we approached.
On one hand, it was oddly overwhelming, the ever approaching land giving off the same bloodlust a predator emits when it has its claws clenching its prey, drool dripping from its mouth as it prepares to savor its future meal. It made me want to immediately jump off the motorboat and swim back home. It didn’t matter if I was stranded in the middle of the ocean, as long as I wasn’t there.
Maybe I’m just a coward…
On the other hand, it was horribly alluring. Similar to a good perfume, beautifully treated hair, and a dress that shows just enough skin to let your imagination run wild- it was almost hypnotizing. The Nehan itself grew more beautiful by the second. Trees grew as far as we could see, right behind the white sand that decorated the beaches. Their tops were crowned by rose flowers. Their roots, colored like the sand, were hidden by tall grass that reached up to the leaves at times.
We passed over a series of corals. Looking down and past the ridiculously transparent water, it almost seemed like we were navigating over a rainbow.
Yet in this beautifully picturesque place- with sands fit for the finest hourglass and trees decorated with the most magnificent blossoms.
I saw no animals eating from the trees.
I saw no birds nesting upon their branches.
I saw not a single fish in the water.
Well that’s… Unsettling.
Even after we made landfall and the engine was turned off, it was awfully quiet. The only thing that made the lightest degree of noise was the leaves’ rustling and the waves crashing against the sand.
Yshtar was the one to break the silence as she walked onto the sand, rifle in hand. “This is very peaceful, isn’t it?”
“You think so?” I replied as I disembarked.
“Yes, I was expecting to be greeted by something or someone, but there’s nothing. It’s pretty nice.”
“It feels wrong, if you ask me.”
“Hmm? How so?”
“I can’t really explain it, if I’m being honest.”
“Huh.”
“Huh?”
“I think you’re just scared.” A smile spread faintly across Yshtar’s face.
Oh, come on… Really? This isn’t fair. Our roles have reversed now! It was way more fun when I would tease you!
“Scared? Of course I’m scared…”
“Well, you’re the scout. So you better braven up a bit, now.”
“Yes yes, I get it. Don’t worry about it.”
Brigid interjected. “We’ll be right behind you, Daßterben!”
Ah… Where would I be without you, Brigid?
“No, we won’t be.”
Why have you gotta be like this Yshtar?
I’m not that terrible a guy.
I’ll stop touching where you don’t want me to, I swear! I really do!
Brigid placed a hand on her chin and tilted her head to the side. “Hm? Why not?”
“Because I say so.”
“And why do you say so?”
“Because it’s him.”
I decided the time was ripe to add my own input to the conversation. “Are you her mom or something?”
Kailasha, Minera, and Brigid quietly chuckled at my comment.
Hey! I did it! I got a reaction from them that wasn’t negative?! Incredible!
Now I just have to work on that consistency and they’re sure to be at my feet any day now.
This is a tremendous leap!
“No, but I will be just that if it keeps her safe from you.”
“I thought you didn’t wanna have children…?”
“This is very different.”
“Is it?”
She simply stared at me for a few seconds in complete silence. The red in her eyes started to really fit her.
Uh oh, Yshtar, it was just a joke, calm down.
“Ugh… Just… Go do your job, idiot.”
“Fine, fine…”
“Good luck, Daßterben!” Exclaimed Brigid.
“Don’t get lost, please. That’d be really inconvenient.” Added Minera.
Well, that’s at least some form of concern for my well being. I’ll take it.
I walked past the beach and immediately, there was an issue.
I swear…
The land dipped down after the sandy mounds of the beach, creating an environment into which salty water from the ocean would leak. On top of a forested, wet environment already being hard to traverse, this one was infested with a variety of smaller plants which would make it exceptionally troublesome to see where I was stepping on. Even with the swamp boots I just put on, in this sort of environment, it was ridiculously easy to fall or get bogged down, step on a trap, step on the nest of a dangerous animal, and so on and so forth.
Yet none of that happened.
In fact, I don’t think I had ever traversed a swamp so quickly in my entire life.
Excellent service! 10/10!
And it’s important to note that I wasn’t even focused on doing so. Once more, I had fallen victim to the enchanting views this land could provide. The sunlight dashing through the leaves, illuminating the clawed, underwater roots of the trees. The water was perfectly still and transparent, as it was in the ocean- only us agitating it. The fallen leaves, which changed their color when my legs slided against them, leaving a distinguishably yellow path at my wake.
A really bright yellow.
Way too bright.
Looking behind me was like looking down a path made for angels to descend upon. It was, quite literally, blinding.
And what’s with the water being perfectly transparent? That makes zero sense. Swampy water is supposed to be colored dirty, not neat and clean like this! This, however, gives me information. If the water is clean, then either someone is cleaning or there’s a process that naturally cleans it.
Might as well note this down, not like anyone’s gonna disturb me. I’ll have plenty of time to theorize on what’s causing it too.
I took out my journal. A book I have kept for a long time that contains information about the places I’ve been to and my thoughts on them. It’d be more akin to a travel log if it didn’t contain personal stories and information.
But that’s, quite literally, a story for another time.
My only complaint with the astounding state of this marvelous piece of real estate was…
The smell.
The unmistakable odor of blood.
However, that was the absolute only sign that there was fauna present recently in this swamp. Aside from it, there was no sign fauna was ever present here.
And that was chilling. Either whatever hunts here is skilled enough to leave absolutely no trace of its prey and terrifying enough for every creature to have developed traits that allow them to leave absolutely no traces… Or there’s something far more macabre going on.
I don’t like this.
I think it’s time to head back.
It has been a good few hours since I started walking inland anyways and the sun is starting to go under.
Might as well head back whilst I still can and report my findings.
And have food.
I have done a lot of work.
It’s my true, honest, and unquestionable belief that I deserve a good meal after this.
I returned with absolutely no issue, surprisingly. Brigid was waiting for me on top of the mound at the end of the beach, also surprisingly.
Wait, was she actually waiting for me?
No way.
“Hey Daßterben, welcome back!” She exclaimed, a smile covering her face.
Aw, she was!
She’s basically my wife by this point.
Please, Brigid, I’m unworthy.
“Hello.” I placed my hands on the bottom mound and sat down. My voice heavy on my breaths.
“Are you tired?”
“A bit… Just need a breather.” Despite my earlier praises for the state this swamp was in, it’s the undeniable truth that traversing through swamps in general is an exhausting task.
“Do you want me to help you up?” Brigid crouched as she spoke.
“Uhm… Yeah, please.”
Brigid extended her gloved hand to me and I reached out. Despite how adorable and fragile she looked, she was actually quite strong. I suppose that is a sensible trait to have when exploring new continents.
As I reached the top of the mound, Brigid gasped as I brought her into a tight hug, our bodies tightly pressed against each other. Her face flushed as we gazed upon each other’s eyes. I let my hands gently slide down her back and cup a feel of her behind.
“W-What are you d-!”
And before she could finish expressing herself, I brought my lips to hers and-
Yeah.
Ok.
I wish.
“Daßterben…?” She looked quite a bit… Puzzled.
“...Don’t worry about it.”
“If you say so!”
Did I go overboard with my fantasy there?
Nah, surely not.
“Are you hungry?” Asked Brigid as I held her hand.
“Very.”
“Alright, let’s head back to the others! They’re also hungry.”
“Oh? And why haven’t they eaten?”
“Because your pack is the one with the food.”
Oh.
I suppose you’re right.
Are they gonna be upset at me?
They’re definitely gonna be upset at me.
Oh, Brigid! Console me, please! Help me prepare before Yshtar cracks my head open!
I mean, since I’m still holding her hand… Does she not know or does she not care?
“Ah, right. My bad.”
“Don’t worry, they’re all pretty immersed in their jobs. So I don’t think they’ve thought about food too much.”
“Is that so…?” As I spoke those words, I let go of her hand and grabbed her shoulder. Pulling her towards me just the slightest bit in the process.
“H-Huh…?”
“Don’t worry too much about it… I’m just tired.”
“Was it that exhausting?”
“Yeah, I don’t really get along with boats. So immediately getting off one and having to go into some pretty uncomfortable terrain was a bit much for me.”
Yeah, right.
“Ah, right… Nothing a good night’s sleep and a good meal won’t fix, though!”
“I hope you’re right…” I brought her in even closer, to the point we were rubbing together and I could just rest my arm on her.
“U-Uhm…” Brigid was starting to get visibly flustered.
She’s blushing! I just can't with her, she’s too adorable!
I wish I could pick her up and steal her right now!
“Don’t think too much about it. I just need better support…”
“R-Right… I can help you.” She wrapped her arm around my waist to help me.
Ah… She sure does smell nice…
You’re too good for this world, Brigid.
“Ah… Thanks…” As I replied, slowly, my hand slid down, under her shirt. My fingers lightly touch just a smidge of her breasts…
Brigid let go of my waist, grabbed my hand, and pushed me away- her blush still present. I almost stumbled over.
“Don’t touch me there. The others told me to be careful around you.”
“How rude.”
“You touch them in places where you shouldn’t.”
“Me?! I’d never.”
“Y-You touched my chest!”
“Lies, you have absolutely no proof of such an event.”
“H-Hmph! I show concern for you and you try this on me!”
Uh…
“I tried nothing.”
Should I maybe… Stop?
“No! Stop! Control yourself and leave me alone!” Brigid stormed off towards a pile of bags around which Minera, Kailasha, and Yshtar were sitting- surrounding them were two pairs of tents. I joined them right after.
Whoops…
Kailasha placed her hand on Brigid’s back when the latter sat down and then looked back at me. A disgusting loss decorating her otherwise pristine face.
“Did he do something to you?” I heard her ask Brigid.
The blonde simply hugged her knees and pouted, still flustered and unwilling to give an answer.
At least she’s not gonna tell them…
I’m just the worst, aren’t I…?
I’m sorry, Brigid.
“What did you do?” Kailasha then asked me.
“She just helped me climb the mound.”
“Does it look like that’s really all?”
“It is!”
Sigh…
“You-” As that word left her mouth, Kailasha stood up filled with righteous fury and then-
Brigid grabbed her hand.
“Just drop it, please.”
“Huh?”
“Don’t harm him.”
“Why are you so keen on protecting him?”
“Just… Don’t harm him.”
Brigid didn’t make eye contact with Kailasha, she didn’t even raise her voice. She simply held her companion in place.
Ah… Saved yet again by Brigid!
I promise to make it up to you…
Not in a lewd way or anything, I’ll cook something nice for you when I get the chance!
Yshtar, who alongside Minera had simply been an onlooker to the unfolding situation, finally spoke up. “Are you done?”
Brigid nodded. “Yes…” Her voice was in the most saddened state I had heard it in.
What the hell, Brigid? Stop making me feel bad for what I did!
Shouldn’t you be upset?! The other three got really upset when I tried something on them and I got beat up and that was that, but you just make me feel terrible.
“Can we have food now?”
You are reading story Unconquered Paradise at novel35.com
Ah, right, I had forgotten about the food.
“I have all the stuff right here.” I said.
“Great. Brigid, if you may.”
And thus I handed over my backpack to Brigid and gestured to the particular part where the food and utensils were inside. As Brigid took the backpack from me, it seemed like she was trying really hard not to make eye contact with me. To the point she struggled to get a good grasp of the backpack and as soon as she did, she quickly swapped it away from me and ran off to Kailasha’s side.
How do I make up for that…?
You can’t make me feel this! I just wanna be simple and perverted, it’s easier that way! And here you come making me feel all guilty and shit. It’s not fair!
Certainly my fault, but not fair!
“Well then, whilst Brigid cooks, let’s get reports over with. Daßterben, give me your report.” Said Yshtar as she took out his notebook yet again alongside with a pen.
And so I did and Yshtar started writing. “There’s a swamp past the mound right here. It goes pretty far inland. I walked for around four hours before turning back and there were no landmarks that indicated it ended. No traces of fauna aside the smell of blood, whilst flora cons-”
“Blood, but no animals?” Her pen stopped in its tracks.
“...Yeah, blood.”
“And did you see any blood?”
“...No.”
“I don’t think I need to consult Minera to straight up tell you that makes absolutely no sense.”
“I know.”
“...You’re 100% serious?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not trying to get one of us to go over there so you can grab our asses or something?”
That’s just rude Yshtar, come on.
I’m actually being serious with you for once.
“No, and we should all four go investigate it later. I’m sure Minera can give more input on the matter than I can.”
“I see… What else?”
“The water was oddly transparent and the trees’ fallen leaves changed color upon contact, but that’s about it as far as worthy mentions go.”
“Minera, what do you say?”
The one Yshtar called simply started giving her answers as she played with one of her locks. “As far as most things go, theoretically that all makes sense. Big swamps on coastlines aren’t uncalled for, no fauna could simply be that he didn’t see any fauna, leaves changing color isn’t exactly new, but water being transparent in a swamp? What…?”
“I know.” I replied.
“Unless some event we simply haven’t observed back home happens here- there’s no way that’s possible.”
“I agree.”
“We have to be careful, then. Whatever happens could put us in danger.”
Yshtar nodded. “And what do you have for us?”
Minera continued. “Took some samples of ocean water, nothing out of the ordinary there. I didn’t really find much in my area of expertise since you told us not to go inland until Daßterben came back. So not a lot I can add, really. Other than the fact the roses on the tops of those trees aren’t natural.”
“Hm…?”
“Roses simply don’t grow on trees like that. They can grow on smaller trees, but not those five meter behemoths, especially not on their top.”
“Huh… Kailasha?”
The gray haired woman quickly answered. “I must say, this place is quite interesting. This sand isn’t natural to beaches, no matter their origin… To be honest, I don’t know what this sand is. I simply couldn’t figure it out.”
“That’s… All?”
“Sadly, yes. I spent all my time trying to find an answer to this question and it wouldn’t come to me.”
“I see… Brigid, I know you helped all three of us at different points since there was nothing particularly relevant to do for you, so don’t worry.”
“As the medic, I hope it stays that way…” Replied the blonde as she was stirring around ingredients on a pot.
“So do I.”
Following the reports, the beach fell quiet as the sun fell beyond the horizon as well. None of the girls so much as glanced in my direction.
It’s almost like I’m unwelcome here.
Ain’t that just the wildest thing?
That said, I wasn’t particularly upset. Watching the sun go under the sea on a beautiful beach whilst the smell of Brigid’s cooking incensed our noses…
It wasn’t a bad feeling.
If I so desired, I could just slightly turn my sights to one side and see Brigid’s angelic figure cooking for us- her blonde hair blending in with the sunset. And if I wished to, when no one was looking, I could just come up behind Brigid and…
No! Bad thoughts, go away!
Not touching Brigid anymore! I’m on Brigid abstinence until she allows me otherwise!
…Or I’ll try to be, at least.
After dinner, I started putting up my tent. Seeing how all four of them already had completed said task, I figured I might as well ask them for help.
“Hey, Yshtar. Can you help me a little here with my tent?”
“Hell no.”
“How about you, Kailasha?”
“You can do it yourself.”
Oh boy…
“Minera…?”
“It’s not that hard, Daßterben”
Because you probably got help from Yshtar or something like that! I’m out here trying to put it up alone whilst y’all are getting ready to head to bed!
Sigh…
I turned my eyes towards Brigid’s. She was sitting on the front of her tent, hugging her knees. Her eyes pierced me like cold ice. No words had to be spoken, not even the thought of a suggestion crossed my mind.
Man… What a shame…
And thus I was left alone to work on my tent. I got it up by the time the night had truly fallen on us, but it was a daunting endeavor- and I definitely got something wrong in the process. I don’t even have to check to know that’s the case.
I entered my tent and sat down. Before going to sleep every day, it’s absolutely crucial for me to note down my experiences in my journal. Even beyond noting them down for the sake of noting them down, I honestly believe they might be useful for someone far into the future- so this was an essential part of concluding every single one of my days.
Although, today there wasn’t as much to write as I was expecting- having just arrived to a new continent and all. It was actually mildly disappointing.
After that, nothing was left to do for me other than go to bed. All things considered, it wasn’t a bad first day at all in the Nehan.
Except when it comes to my relationships with the girls…
Besides that, no run-ins with natives, no encounters with predators, no injuries… It was really non-eventual.
There were things worth investigating further and writing home about, though. So whilst I’m still somewhat nervous, I’m looking forward to our discoveries these next few weeks. Being nervous is simply another part of the adventure, after all!
Besides, I could at least feel safe in my tent knowing Yshtar was standing guard for at least first half of the night. I’ve got nothing to worry about at least for some time.
And with those thoughts in mind, as I could faintly see the silhouette of the massive boat that brought us here in the distance, I fell asleep.
I don’t know what time it was, I don’t know if it was the wind, the water, or the earth underneath- I don’t even know if I was quite really awake.
But one thing was clear, something had rumbled. It had echoed far and wide from whichever epicenter it had. The noise akin to that of the stirring of a ship’s innards. The clanking of pipes and plates, metal and wood- reminiscent of an infernal orchestra. And the sound was long and deep too, as if it had been played at ridiculously slow motion, but suddenly stopping in the middle. The movement was sporadic and brusque and strong enough to shake all the things that surrounded me to some degree.
None of my things had fallen over, but my tent was slightly warped. Although one could say that was merely the result of the poor job I did earlier.
I scrambled to put some clothes on and leave my tent. Yshtar was standing right outside- rifle and flashlight in hand.
Before I even had a chance to open my mouth, she was already speaking. “Yes, I felt it.”
“What do you think that was?”
“Hell if I know.”
“Earthquake, maybe?”
“I don’t think earthquakes make noises like that.”
“...Did anyone else feel it?” I said as I glanced over to the other tents.
“It looks like it’s just us.”
“I see…”
“Well, if it didn’t wake up any of the others, it probably wasn’t that bad.” Yshtar took a seat back on her chair.
If this rumbling doesn’t have anything to do with any living being, I’m also certain it’s somewhat related as to why the lands beyond the beach are flooded and swampy. Which means that assuming a good percentage of that water comes from the ocean- we’re right on its course…
“I disagree, we should move.”
“Huh? Don’t you dare think I’m going with you anywhere in this darkness.”
Seriously? I’m actually concerned for our well being here!
“I’m being serious.”
“So am I.”
Yshtar, please. Really not in the mood to get berated by you right now, for fuck’s sake.
“Listen to me, we might be in genuine danger here. We gotta wake up the others and leave!”
Her bloody eyes glared at me for a few moments, probably pondering whether I was serious or just attempting to do perverted things again. She rested her head on her hand and remained silent.
Everything was silent.
Even the wind was quiet.
And then it started again.
A rumbling, rough enough to startle Yshtar- a battle-hardened warrior- was happening yet again. I could feel the sand shift under my feet and over the starlit ocean, we saw the waves change direction and collide not against the shore, but against each other.
The noise surrounded us. Like the drums of a marching army, whose feet quake against the soil. It was inescapable. It didn’t go away. It rendered us both completely vulnerable, no matter how either of us covered our ears, we couldn’t stop it- it wouldn’t stop. There was no way of telling from where it came either, look high or look low- east or west- it was encompassing.
And then it ceased.
The waves calmed down.
The noise died out.
From one of the tents, came out Kailasha- her face lit by the moonlight. “We need to leave. Wake up the-”
And before she could finish speaking, Minera left her tent- dazed in panic. ”What the fuck was that?!”
Finally, crawling out of her tent was Brigid, rubbing her eyes. “Mmm… Who shook my tent?”
Kailasha stood up quickly and grabbed Yshtar’s hand. “We need to leave. Now.”
“We can do that.” Answered Yshtar.
Aha, ok. So you listen to her, but not to me? I can’t believe this Yshtar!
Is it because of her tits? That’s it, isn’t it?! Tits got you?!
Although admittedly, she is the geologist here… And she also doesn’t have my reputation…
Nonetheless, I still feel betrayed, Yshtar.
With haste, everyone scrambled to pack up their tents and prepare to leave. Minera had to slap Brigid a couple times to wake her up, but once she was awake she finished packing everything within three minutes and proceeded to help everyone else.
As I packed, I felt the need to clarify the situation with Kailasha. “Earthquake or what, Kailasha?”
“It felt like a natural earthquake.”
“How could you tell?”
“I can’t, but that would make the most sense.”
Oh.
“Huh.”
“Either way, it doesn’t matter. Earthquake or not, a tremor like that would definitely bring after itself at least a few large waves. We have to go somewhere else.”
“The only thing after this beach is a swamp.”
“It’s still better than being here on the beach.”
“Wilco.”
Unfortunately, no one of us had the opportunity to change into proper clothes- we had to do only the most essential thing- pack. We will be getting our feet soaked, but that’s not a big issue compared to what’s facing us right now. Although it might allow us to travel faster, the call hasn’t- and probably won’t be- made.
When I finished packing my tent, I turned my sights on the others. Brigid was helping Yshtar wrap up, whilst Minera and Kailasha were both already done. Before long, Yshtar’s orders echoed across the beach. “Alright, move out. Pervert, lead the way.” She gestured at me with her rifle.
“Alri- Hey! At least call me by my name!”
Seriously, what’s with her?! Can’t she at least do that whilst we’re in danger?!
I know I wouldn’t grope her if we were in danger and I got the opportunity!
Probably…
“Did I stutter?”
“I- Wilco.” And thus, I took the first steps over the mound and down towards the swamp only lit by moon and starlight- the girls right behind me.
I’ll get you back for that, I swear. I’m not as immature as you as to risk delaying us at this crucial moment. Hmph.
The swamp was dark.
Very dark.
Although from the outside we were able to see the red tops of the trees lit by the stars. Within the swamp, under the trees, it was ridiculously dark. Each of us five took out their flashlights without the need to receive a command and lit them on. What we saw was roughly what I expected to see, nothing more than water, trunks, and a few fallen leaves.
And it was quiet. No crickets, no frogs, not a single step could be heard as far as we could tell. The only thing that we were capable of listening to was our very own steps as we crossed the swamp with haste. Not even the sound of the waves was heard in the distance anymore- presumably because the waves had receded in anticipation of the tsunami.
We had no time.
But then I took a step into the water and the leaves started to move and when they did, the phenomenon I had observed previously took place yet again. This time under the night sky, illuminating the path left behind me.
“Woah…” Gasped Minera.
We really have to come back and see this at a more appropriate time…
No one else voiced their reactions, but behind me I could almost sense Brigid and Kailasha’s eyes glistening at the sight. Yshtar didn’t seem like one for pretty things, though.
The further in we walked, the longer the path stretched. Until we could barely see it off in the distance. We must’ve walked for at least five or six minutes by this point, running away from the coast.
Most of the path directly in front of the girls had been lit by the leaves. Therefore, unlike me, who had to focus solely on the path in front of me. They had the opportunity to point their flashlights at the trees and look at our surroundings. And they needed to point their flashlights at them because otherwise it was absolutely pitch dark, given that the leaves seemed to direct their light straight up.
And that’s when they noticed it.
“Hey uhm… Daßterben…?”
Yes! She talked to me again!
“Yeah?”
“Were the trees always this tall?”
“Huh?” I stopped dead in my tracks. Despite the darkness, Brigid’s body and face were perfectly well lit by the leaves.
She looks kinda scary, though…
Not my Brigid!
She pointed her finger towards a tree to our left. It looked like a normal trunk, running from the roots under the water to the top…
Wait.
Where did the top go?
There was a strange black mist covering the top of the tree. When I turned around to observe the tops of other trees, I noticed the tops of the trees on the higher scheme of things were also covered by the mist. In fact, the mist went on forever as we could tell. And when I really thought about it, at some point, we stopped receiving light from the skies at all.
“I don’t like this.”
I slowly pulled my machete out. It wouldn’t protect me from what I couldn’t see, but it made me feel safer to wield it in my hand. Ysthar saw this and pointed her rifle at our left. Kailasha and Minera both got their handguns out and pointed them towards our right.
“I’m…” Brigid couldn’t finish the sentence, her voice was shaking. She hadn’t even pulled out her firearm. I could see her, in the corner of my eye, simply looking at me.
Having her eyes on me was oddly relaxing.
She was just… Looking.
But then, there was something on the way, and it was biting at my arm.
It was hard, it was too hard. It bit and crushed my arm immediately. My skin and muscles turned into mush.
And as soon as it struck me, it was gone.
I couldn’t even scream.
And then everything turned black.
