Chapter 33: Chapter 32

Detective looked at the friends that walked in and his eyes landed on the boy with an oversized shirt on with red hair. His gaze moved over to the other, who looked like he didn’t want to be here.

“Detective Rowen, this is Halo McClelleand and this is Niam Brown,” the secretary introduced.

Detective Rowen looked at Niam again and smirked inwardly. Niam was checking him out, but he couldn’t lie. He knew he was handsome. Clearing his throat, he showed them the seats with his hands. “Let’s start with you. I heard you slapped Nicola at a Justin Owens party three months ago. Why?” He asked Niam.

Niam crossed his left leg over his right and said, “Because that bitch slept with Romeo that night and still said she’d do whatever to be his.”

“That is not a reason to hit a woman,” Detective Rowen stated.

“Yeah, and I bet your wife’s best friend would do the same. And don’t swing the gender-based violence card at me,” Niam said.

He looked between them and asked, “Do the two of you have any knowledge of why Romeo would act violently towards his friend?”

The pair looked at each other, than Halo spoke, “It’s none of your business.”

“I am an officer of the law...”

“And that means shit to us. Why don’t you just tell us what this is about because we are missing class,” Halo snapped at him.

Detective Rowen looked at Halo and saw that he was angry, he narrowed his eyes and asked, “Why are you so eager to head back to class, for all, your school is known for the low grades even though your boyfriend is a straight-A student.”

“Excuse you sir, but I don’t care about the others, but my ass has to make a bunch of cupcakes for an order,” Halo answered with a huff and sat back, annoyed.

Detective Rowen stared between Halo and Niam, then asked, “One of the students of Horizon High was killed last night. Have the two of you heard about it?”

“You talking about that bitch Nicola?” Halo asked him, surprising both Niam and Detective Rowen.

“Why am I sensing hostility?” Detective Rowen asked.

“Because I am glad that bitch is dead. At least now I won’t have to argue with Romeo about her ass!” Halo said with a sneer on his face.

Detective Rowen narrowed his eyes on him and asked, “If I remember correctly, your father is Mr McClelland, the lawyer, right?”

“Yes,” Halo answered.

“Do you know your father is a criminal lawyer who makes sure all of those who commit crimes, including your boyfriend, stay out of jail?” He asked.

Halo stared at him for a moment then said, “I only know that he is there when I need him and you should stop accusing Romeo. You said Nicola was murdered last night and Romeo was nowhere near her. He was busy eating my ass out at my home and even slept over. You can ask my mother too if you don’t believe me.”

Detective Rowen wrote his words down, then said, “So, the reason behind Romeo attacking his friend? That is a criminal offense, and he will be put behind bars if his parents press charges.”

Halo turned to Niam, who looked at him too, then they both sighed. Niam looked at Detective Rowen and said, “Justin won’t press charges, and he’ll convince his parents not to.”

“Why is that? You seem so sure,” Detective Rowen asked curiously.

“Because he got me pregnant without my consent and isn’t taking responsibility,” Niam answered.

Detective Rowen and the other two were shocked. So what Romeo said was true about him falling pregnant.

Halo scoffed at his reaction and said, “You see, detective, something you don’t know about my boyfriend is that he always plays superman and that is why I love him. It was just last night when I told him about what happened to Niam and he went silent. Romeo could barely sleep because Justin is his homeboy but did something like this. Romeo always does something for a reason, just like on the night Niam was raped, Romeo was fucking Nicola. We broke up shortly after that and as much as he wanted to move on, he couldn’t. And the day we got back together, Nicola was trying to get him to be hers when all Romeo wanted was to be with me again. Romeo looked like he aged a few years after I left him and now that we are back together, why is this bitch even in her afterlife still bothering us?”

Tapping the pen on the table, Detective Rowen explained, “Well, Halo, I don’t think you are stupid enough to kill her, but your boyfriend might be. I asked him who she has a conflict with and he mentioned you two. Now I do not know if you are acting as his alibi, but I did deeper research on Mr Washington. His father is or was ex-military who served in the police force then moved onto working for the FBI, but sadly he went missing one day and his body was found brutally beaten up in the outskirts with bullet holes in his chest. Now we are uncertain who it was, but Romeo did not even cry at his father’s funeral and…”

“And just like Niam’s child, Romeo’s father raped his mother and told her to keep the kid. I know all about who Romeo is and, just like him, I wouldn’t cry at my dad’s funeral if he did not show up at my soccer games or showed his ass around the house. Don’t go digging up his past, please. I do not need my man sulking around me,” Halo said.

Detective Rowen looked at Niam and saw that he was crying. He sighed and looked down at their files and suddenly said, “I saw on your file that you are working under Mikyle Prince.”

“Yes?” Halo answered, confused.

“Do you perhaps know his girlfriend, Vanessa Miller?” He asked.

“Of course,” Halo answered.

“And how is the relationship between Vanessa and Romeo?” He answered conversationally.

Halo thought about it and answered, “I wouldn’t know. When Romeo picks me up at the shop, they just greet, but why would you ask about their relationship?”

Detective Rowen stared at him momentarily as if thinking something, then turned to Niam and said, “Niam, you do not have to be afraid of Justin. If he raped you and you have the proof within you, you can press charges i…”

“I’m sorry, detective, but I don’t want my child’s father in jail. Justin may have forced himself on me even after knowing my situation makes him an asshole, but he is trying to take care of me,” Niam answered him.

Detective Rowen took in a deep breath and said, “Well, okay. I think that is all. You can go back to your classes now.”

Halo got up and looked at him, then said, “Stay away from Romeo.”

Detective Rowen smirked and looked at his partner after they left, saying, “Keep an eye on McClelland’s son. He knows something and is intentionally covering up for Romeo. Nicola died brutally and so did Romeo’s father. This can’t be a coincidence, especially with the new information about Romeo sleeping with Nicola. None of them know it, but Nicola was the one who notified our connect right after Romeo and Halo got back together.”

His partner nodded and they walked out of the office. As they were walking towards Romeo who was hugging Halo, Romeo turned around and looked at them.

Detective Rowen looked into Romeo’s eyes and felt a shiver go down his spine because of the look he was given. Instinct told him he was right on the money and stopped in front of the couple. He looked at Halo, who was crying, and said to Romeo, “I hope we do not see each other again.”

He was about to walk away but stopped and looked at Romeo again and said, “Oh, I forgot to mention, the one who told us you were selling drugs is none other than Nicola who is now dead, that is why we suspect you.”

Romeo gave him no reaction but Halo turned around and said, “Well, it’s good she is dead.”

“Enough Halo,” Romeo said, and pulled Halo to follow him.

“He doesn’t seem phased,” his partner said.

Detective Rowen looked at his partner and said, “Make sure you keep your gun on you at all times, especially in the night. Nicola’s death was planned with precise attention to detail. Word is on the street that a eighteen-year-old African American is a clean killer with a thirst for blood and the look in Romeo’s eyes tells me he might just be the one everyone is talking about.”

She stared at Romeo’s back and said, “He fits the profile, but I don’t see where and how he’d be a deadly killer.”

She mindlessly put her hands in her pocket and felt a sting, and hissed. She pulled her hands out and looked at her left hand. On her middle finger was a small white dot and her finger was turning red. She sucked on her finger. Detective Rowen looked at her and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Something pricked me in my pocket,” she mumbled.

“Well, we need to be wary of him. His father’s murder still isn’t solved,” he said.

His partner narrowed her eyes and nodded her head. “You still didn’t answer me.”

“Nicola may have done it out of spite, but if he is the school’s plug then he will obviously be trained. Cordell, K’Lavon and Romeo must all have killed someone to join the mafia under Vanessa. The word on Vanessa is that she only hires those that are ruthless or teaches her followers to be ruthless.” He said as he thought it over.

His partner rubbed her head, feeling a headache coming and said, “I still don’t know-how can you link all of these together?”

Detective Rowen looked at his partner, and just as he was going to answer her, he saw her eyes roll back into her head and caught her.

“Naomi?” Detective Rowen called to her and slapped her face a few times. Her chest started moving fast and as he was panicking and calling for help, foam started bubbling out of her mouth and she stopped moving.

“Why are you yelling?” Romeo asked, and crouched down on the other side of Naomi.

Rowen looked at Romeo, surprised at who was looking at him, who then lifted his hand and ran his hand over her face, closing her eyes.

Rowen stared down at her, horrified as he just realized what had happened. “How? How could you? She has a family.”

“Yes, a loving husband and daughter. You can only blame yourself. You should have never gotten involved with me or brought Halo into this,” Romeo said, and stood up. He pulled his phone out and called the ambulance.

He looked down at Rowen, who was distraught, and said, “You won’t find any evidence. Our specialist is the best.”

Rowen looked up at Romeo and asked, “How could you kill the girl pregnant with your child?”

Romeo burst out laughing. “My child? She was for the streets. Nicola slept with the teachers too and you expect me to believe that? Shit, the only one I’m trying to get pregnant is Halo.”

“I know you’re not an idiot Romeo,” Rowen said.

Romeo shrugged his shoulders and said, “I am sorry for your loss, Detective Rowen.”

Romeo climbed into his car and looked at Halo, who was staring down at his feet with tears in his eyes. He rubbed his hand up and down Halo’s back and said, “You did good.”

Halo’s shoulders started shaking, and he started sobbing. Romeo sighed and looked ahead of him and said, “If you really want to have children with me, we can get you into the program Vanessa told me about. The one where they implant a uterus in a male body.”

Halo looked over at Romeo and said through his wailing, “Don’t fucking talk to me about children. You are being chased by the cops and you just killed one!”

Romeo glared at him and asked, “Does that have anything to do with you?”

“Romeo, answer me! How will I know if you won’t just suddenly kill me too? I love you, but I don’t think I can do this anymore,” Halo said.

Romeo glared at him and slapped Halo across the face. “And what? So you want to fucking leave me now, huh? Do you think I will let you leave just like that?”

He grabbed Halo by the neck and pushed him into the seat and said, “I don’t give a fuck if you are in your feelings. You better get it into your head that you are never leaving my side because I killed that bitch for us, not myself!”

“I didn’t tell you to kill her,” Halo said as he pushed Romeo off of him and rubbed his neck and cheek.

“Yeah well, I killed her anyway end of the story. Now you need to remember your story,” Romeo said, and started his car.

Halo glared at him and said, “I still want your baby.”

Romeo’s whole body sank. He looked at the red mark on Halo’s face and said, “I’m sorry for hitting you.”

“You have issues Romeo, my face and ass are two different things,” Halo said.
