Because of Alex, I was only able to fall asleep closer to the morning. Therefore, when I woke up, I felt simply disgusting. While Nina was styling my hair, I almost fell asleep. Today she chose for me a dress of emerald velvet with flared sleeves. It was cool outside, and Nina said that I needed to dress warmer, but this dress also had open shoulders. I didn't even know if it would warm me or not.

"My lady, hold on a little longer. I'm almost done."

"Good."

"The Duke has brought a present for you."

"What present?" I opened my eyes.

"Open the box in front of you."

I opened a small box and saw that it contained a golden tiara that looked like a wide headband studded with emeralds and earrings to go with it. Wow, he decided to give his daughter a present.

"What a beauty. It's perfect for your outfit." Nina gazed admiringly at the jewellery. "Trust me, my lady. No one can take their eyes off you."

My maid gave me a voluminous Greek hairstyle, applied a minimum of makeup, but painted my lips red. Ariana looked like a girl from Celtic legends. Thanks to the colour of the jewellery and dress, the emerald in my eyes became even brighter.

"Lady, you look so much like your mother." Nina smiled sadly.

"Really?"

"Yes. You are as beautiful as she is."

In the novel, it was said that Nina was Ariana's mother's maid and took care of her after the duchess' death. I never had an older sister; I was the one who took care of my younger sister. I closed my eyes and remembered Sasha's face. Her curly blond hair, sonorous laugh, and innocent grey eyes. The way she pouted at me over trivialities was cute.

"My lady, forgive me. Because of my thoughtless words, you're crying." I felt Nina wiping my cheeks with a handkerchief. She thought I was crying because of the Duchess.

"It is not your fault."

"Sorry."

"Stop apologising, we've got to go." I smiled at her.

"All right, my lady."

We left the tent and went to the venue of the tournament. Alex and Duke had already left. Men and women in the tournament sat on different sides. A huge platform was made for the arena. Knights fought on horseback using special long spears. There would be about ten participants in total. At least that was what the novel said.

Not everyone wanted to cripple themselves at the tournament; they came to hunt. I noticed the girls who were with Bella yesterday sitting in the chairs. The main character was also with them. They were talking about something with a fair-haired girl who was very pale. They giggled and looked sideways at her. Was it Sarah? If so, then it was time to save her. I confidently walked toward them.

"Good afternoon, lady. May I join?

"Lady Ariana, of course." The girl in the blue dress pointed to a chair next to Sarah.

"Thanks."

"Lady Ariana, since you're here to ask a question?"

"Of course, ask."

"Is it true that you turned down the offer to become a candidate for the bride of the Crown Prince?"

"Yes, it is." I chuckled. Not only were they bullies, but also gossips.

"May I know why?"

"Why should I participate in the selection, if the winner is already obvious? Are there any of you who are at least a little suitable for this role?" Even though I knew that he would choose Bella, I still decided to annoy them.

"You are overconfident."

"Do you think so? I am a duke's daughter, and you? None of you have as much influence as my family."

"Lady Ariana, you are just as they say you are."

"Even though I'm a jerk, I'm still the duke's daughter. I don't really care what you think." I got up from the chair. "Lady Sarah, do you mind moving elsewhere? There are too many annoying flies."

"Oh, sure." The girl got up and followed me. I sighed. Thank God it was her, and I was not mistaken.

We went further and sat on the chairs near the wooden fence surrounding the spectators' seats on both sides. Sarah was in tears.

"Lady Sarah, why are you crying?" I looked at her in surprise.

"Thank you for everything, Lady Ariana. You have helped me even though I am the daughter of a low baron. They wore dresses that I made."

"Your dresses are beautiful. I wanted to meet someone who makes such amazing things. I am grateful to you." I took out a handkerchief and handed it to her.

"Thank you."

"Please stop thanking me."

"Sorry." She whimpered.

"If you want to thank me, then become my friend."

"Are you serious?"

"More than." I took her by the hand. "You should have come to me yesterday."

The bugle sounded as loud as yesterday. The Emperor stepped out onto the balcony and raised his hand.

"I declare the beginning of the tournament open. All knights get ready. We expect a fair fight from you."

The people applauded vigorously. A knight in black armour entered the arena. There was no coat of arms on his chest. Who was he? I didn't remember this in the novel, but then I couldn't remember everything in the novel. The black knight and his opponent rushed to meet each other. But his opponent did not have a chance, because he was immediately taken down from the saddle.

There was loud applause. I watched all this with horror. Did anyone really like to look at this? The black knight quickly dealt with all the participants in the tournament, but for some reason, Keane was not among them. His coat of arms was a white lily. Why didn't he participate?

"Greetings to the winner of today's tournament, the black knight." The judge shouted. Everyone applauded again.

The knight dismounted from his horse and approached him.

"Take off your helmet so we can see our winner."

The knight slowly took off his helmet and turned to the emperor. It was the crown prince. Everyone hummed loudly. He just smiled smugly.

"Mikael, what are you doing? Why did you participate in the tournament? You could be hurt badly!" The Emperor yelled at him.

"As you can see, I'm unharmed, father. Listen carefully, I don't need the prize money, give it to the servants who prepared it all."

Another applause. I didn't think he was capable of such things. I shook my head. The prince was in no hurry to leave the lease. He looked at me and smiled. Throwing a helmet at the judge, Mikael came up to me and leaned against the fence.

"Lady Valmont. I don't want prize money, but I want your handkerchief as a token of my victory."

"I'm sorry, your highness. But I gave my handkerchief to Lady Sarah."

"It is true, your highness." Sarah showed me my handkerchief.

"Then a glove." Did he have an adrenaline rush from victory?

"Very well, your highness." I got up from the chair, and went up to him. If I refused him in front of everyone, I would run into trouble. "Are you sure it's my glove you want?"

"Absolutely." He took my hand, pulled me to him, and again I heard his whisper, just like that time at the ball. "I want the glove of the one who refused to be my bride."

I could have guessed that if those girls knew, then he certainly would.

"Lady Ariana, I never give up what I like." The prince removed the glove from my hand, but his lips were also pressed against my ear.

"Your Highness..."

"I dedicate this victory to you." He kissed the corner of my lips, and left with a grin.

I wouldn't forget this. The sassy asshole made everyone stare at me because of his antics. How dare he? He thought that if he was a prince, then everything was possible for him. The humiliation from this day, I would return it with anger to him tenfold!
