Aiden's words were constantly spinning in my head, so I decided to take a bath to distract myself somehow. To be honest, I didn't remember how Aiden fell in love with Bella at all. It was said that he loved her, like everyone else. In general, if you think carefully, there were a lot of inconsistencies in the novel. It looked like it was written in a big hurry. I also wondered who would produce such a strange book in their right mind.

"My lady, are you taking a bath?"

"Nina, why are you back so soon?"

"I was very worried about you." Nina entered the room and sat down next to the bathtub.

"Again?" I smiled at her.

"Were you all right? Nothing happened?"

It happened that I was at night in a brothel with Aiden. I saw Victor there, dressed defiantly. Aiden was attacked there, and he kissed me so that my head was spinning, and I came to my senses for a long time. Apart from these events, nothing happened. I couldn't tell her all this because she would start to panic again.

"Things are good."

"Really?" She looked at me sceptically.

"Yes. Nina, tell me, why are you afraid of that priest?" We needed to change the topic and learn about Victor at the same time.

"My lady..." Nina shuddered.

"Please, tell me."

She took a deep breath. "As you know, my mother was the Duchess' maid. My sisters and I grew up here because the duchess allowed it. She was very kind and took care of everyone. When I was twelve, the Duchess took in a boy my own age."

"Victor." So it happened three years before the death of the Duchess.

"Yes. He was very reserved and unsociable. I don't know if you remember him or not when he lived here."

"No. I do not remember him."

"This is not surprising. The lady did not allow him to approach you. He always frightened me, and especially his look, the way he looked at your mother. He was obsessed with her."

"Obsessed?"

"Exactly. The lady was bitten by your father's hunting dog once. The next day, it lay dead in front of the estate, and so did the Duchess's horse. And then my older sister disappeared after she accidentally spilled tea on your mother's dress." Nina squeezed the edge of her apron.

"Didn't your mother notice this?" The duchess must have noticed such behaviour.

"She noticed, but we only kicked him out after the disappearance of my sister."

"And what happened then?"

"Victor settled in the church she helped."

"That's how he knew she attended church when she was pregnant. But how could such a person become a priest?"

"I don't know, my lady. After your mother's death, he disappeared. I thought he disappeared from our lives forever." Nina looked at me sadly. "You are a copy of your mother, so be careful. I ask you to. I promised her that I would protect you."

"Good. I promise." I took her by the hand.

Now I understand why Nina was so scared of Victor. Judging by her story, he was a real psycho.

After the bath, I went down to the dining room. The Duke and Duchess were not there yet. The door swung open abruptly, and Desmond ran into the dining room and wrapped his arms around me.

"Good morning, Riya."

"Good morning." I stroked his head.

"Can you imagine, today I found such a huge beetle and wanted to give it to you, but Alex said that you would not like it." He moved away from me, and I saw in his hand a small bouquet of flowers that had grown in our garden.

"And you decided to give me flowers?" God, he was so cute.

"Yes. Do you like it?"

"You know, I'll be happy with any of your gifts, even if it's a beetle." I took the bouquet from his hands and kissed him on the cheek.

Alex strolled into the dining room. His expression was bleak.

"Can we talk?"

"Can't it wait?"

"No."

"Good." I turned to Desmond. "Desi, find Nina, and put flowers in a vase with her. And then I'll come, we'll have breakfast, and we'll play."

"Riya, just talk to him for a little while. Come back to me soon."

"Certainly." I smiled at him.

To be honest, I had no desire to talk to Alex after his antics on the hunt. I thought talking to the duke helped him a little because he didn't make a scene with me anymore. But I felt the conversation we now have was not an easy one.

"Let's go for a walk in the garden." Alex looked out the window.

"Good."

We had been walking in the garden for ten minutes, but Alex was silent. I went to a small fence of hydrangea bushes and touched it with my hand. Nina said that Ariana's mother loved them, and so did my mother. They were very similar in character.

"I want to ask you just one question, please answer me honestly." Alex looked at me seriously.

"Ask away."

"Are you really not remembering anything or are you pretending?"

"I have already told you. No matter how much you ask, my answer will not change." I didn't have the strength to keep repeating the same thing over and over again.

"Why do I feel like you're lying to me?" he asked bitterly.

"It's true. I'm not lying to you."

"Why don't you want to remember?"

"I can't remember. I just can't." Taking a deep breath, I turned back to the flowers.

"I think you're driving me crazy. Where have you been? I don't see you in your bed today." His voice almost broke.

"On a walk."

"With that bastard and womaniser?" He abruptly grabbed my shoulder and turned me around.

"Yes."

"I don't understand what's going on in your head. Do you even know who he is? Or are you pretending not to know?"

"Aiden is a good person." I frowned.

"Are you crazy? He is a ruthless killer. During the war, he killed so many people. You can't even imagine."

"I don't care. I know about it."

"Why is everyone good to you but me?" Alex shook me hard by the shoulders.

"It hurts."

"Hurt? Yes, at least you know how you hurt me. For so many years, I've been going crazy, either from your warmth or from indifference."

"Enough."

"You are my first love. I can't let you go." He pulled me close.

"Alex, we were kids. It wasn't all serious." Wait, how did I know that?

"It's not serious for you. My feelings remain the same."

"Stop it." I hissed.

"I love you just like when I was a child. This will never change."

Having said these words, Alex released me and left. I felt like I knew what he was talking about for a second.
