I only met our butler today. Did my words have such a strong effect on the duke? The novel said that he loved his second wife, but I deeply doubt this. A man like him was probably incapable of loving anyone at all. I went up to my bedroom, put down the flowers, and changed behind the screen.

"My lady, are you back?" I heard footsteps and Nina's voice. She quietly entered the room.

"Yes. Did anything happen while I was away?"

"The Duke asked where you were."

"Really?" I smiled wryly.

"And the older young master, too."

"What did you answer them?" I put on my nightgown and stepped out from behind the screen. Nina was probably already used to the fact that I often change clothes myself.

"I said you were away on business but would be back soon."

"Understood, thank you very much. How is Desmond?"

"Junior young master was upset that you were gone all day, but after we played with him, he calmed down a bit."

"He's sleeping?"

"Yes."

"Good. Put the flowers in the water, please." I took the bouquet from the table and gave it to her.

"Who gave them to you?" She smiled her double-digit smile at me.

"A friend gave them as a token of gratitude for the help."

"Understandable. Would you like a snack?"

"Of course."

"Would you like to bring it here?"

"Yes. I'm sorry to disturb you." I smiled wearily.

"It is my duty to take care of you, lady." She smiled and left the room.

Outside, lightning flashed, and thunder rumbled. I took out a book in English, which I bought in a shop, and turned over a few pages. Aiden said it was the language of the ancients for them. It meant that the book, like the scroll, was written by a person who knew him very well. But who could it be? Was there a possibility that someone other than me was in this novel? I looked at the raindrops running down the glass and remembered that soon after the hunting competition, there would be Keane meeting Bella for the second time. He would ask her for a handkerchief after he won the tournament that would take place before the hunt.

"I thought you weren't coming back." Alex's voice came from behind me. "Did you have a good time?

"What did you forget in my room?"

"Yes, I decided to find out where the unmarried girl was carried all day."

"That doesn't concern you." I turned to him. Alex folded his arms across his chest and looked at me intently. He was wearing dark blue trousers, and his white shirt was completely unbuttoned.

"More than it concerns. Do you have any idea what rumours will spread about you?"

"I don't care. It won't be worse than before."

"Why did you refuse your father's offer?"

"I already told you I'm not interested."

"Why?" He never took his blue eyes off me. I couldn't tell from his face whether he was angry with me or not.

"I repeat, this is none of your business."

"Is it because of that man?" He quickly closed the distance between us. "Did you visit him yesterday and today?"

"No." I turned away from him.

"I can smell cigarette smoke from your hair." Alex leaned toward me. "You don't smoke, so I think you were with someone who smokes today. And most of the time, it's a man."

"Maybe I was with a friend who smokes."

"It can't be true. You don't have a friend."

"What happened to you? Why did you interrogate me?" I started to get angry.

He silently approached me even closer. I stepped back until I felt a wall behind me. Alex chuckled and put his hands on the wall, pinning me.

"Now you have nowhere to run." The blond whispered these words into my ear.

"Get away from me."

"I don't want to. So will you tell me where you've been?" I felt his hot breath on my neck. "Or should I ask you differently?"

"How many times do I have to tell you that this is none of your business?"

"You're so stubborn." He chuckled again. "But we have the whole night ahead of us."

"Nina will be back soon."

"She won't come back. I said that you are already sleeping."

"Why?" I looked at him in horror. What was happening to him today?

"So that we don't get in the way."

"Enough, get out of my bedroom."

I tried to push him away, and hit him in the chest, but he only smiled. Then he grabbed my arms and pinned me against the wall. Alex leaned so low that I could feel his breath on my neck again, and then his lips. He went down to the collarbone. I was so scared that my knees were trembling. I closed my eyes and whispered.

"Alex, stop being scary."

He didn't answer, but I felt the grip on my arms loosen. Alex gently tucked my hair behind my ear, smiled sadly, and left the room. I fell to the floor and wrapped my arms around myself. My whole body was trembling with fear. Why did he do all this? Ariana was his sister. Although not by blood, she was her sister all the same.

"My lady, are you all right?" I felt myself being touched again and screamed. "Lady, it's me Nina."

"Nina?"

"Yes, my lady it's me." She looked at me worriedly.

"Nina." I threw myself on her neck and hugged her.

"What's wrong with you?" The maid stroked my head.

"I'm scared."

"Don't be afraid, my lady. I'm with you."

Nina helped me get up from the floor and sit on the bed. I drank some water and took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry, my lady. The young master said he wanted to talk to you. He ordered me to wait outside the door." My maid looked at me with regret.

"It is not your fault."

"The young master is not himself today. He didn't even go with the duke to town."

"Did Alex sit all day at the manor?" I looked at her in surprise.

"Yes, my lady."

"You're free to go." I calmed down a bit and wanted to sleep, but I needed to look at my notes urgently before that.

"All right, my lady. Goodnight."

As soon as Nina's steps subsided outside the door, I quickly took out my notes. As I thought, today was the day Alex and Bella met. Why did Alex stay at home? This idiot should have gone with the duke, and he was sitting at home. Well, it was good for him. If he didn't fall in love with Bella, he would stay alive. We needed to stop thinking about this and what happened today.
