Chapter 8: Ch8: Towards the unknown

♤Are we being chased?♤

I looked around, finding nothing but the surrounding water, and a gigantic wave of fire and smoke in the far distance. 

“I don’t think so?” 

♤Figured this seed person would come after you.♤

He had a point, a very valid one at that. 

“There must be a reason!” a shout escaped my lips. 

♤Definitely.♤

Our trip had started with an escape out of my imagination. Never once had I thought of leaving the village, and now it felt like it was all but a distant dream. 

Slowly, I was saying farewell to my despair. Everyone that had died and those strangers.

“Did they perhaps die in the fire?” 

♤I doubt it would be that easy.♤

“For now...” I wondered what else to say, but the truth was no less than whatever fate held for us.

 ♤If your ability works properly, you should never change the direction we’re heading.♤

“Otherwise, we’ll get lost, is that it?”

♤Indeed Rain.♤

“I’ve never seen anything other than my village, and even that, well, only a part of it.”

♤How come?♤

I sighed deeply before uttering another word. Whatever happened made me feel a strange sense of trust in this item. 

Perhaps because it wasn’t alive, it didn’t cause me to feel embarrassed like it did when talking to a person.

Maybe it had to do with the connection we made.

 “As starters, you appeared out of nowhere.”

I heard a humming kind of sound, as if telling me to proceed.

“But before that, the goddess wanted to bless me, yet I refused.”

♤That’s new...♤

“All that power she showed engulfing the entire island. If it had been used to save my family. Then...”

I clenched the stick, causing it to let out a whine.

“Sorry...”

♤It’s alright. You don’t have to apologize after going through that.♤

“Say... do you really feel all sorts of things?”

 ♤Sadly. The cold water below is terrible.♤

I chuckled softly, covering my smile behind my hands.

“Before I couldn’t quite hear what you said. It had this strange noise, giving me headaches.”

♤Do you mean the pact?♤

“I think so,” I covered myself from the sun using a lengthy fur.

♤From what I was told, this is the world of items.♤

Instantly, I remembered the shovel that I had left behind. It was far too late to retrieve it. Maybe its weight would’ve made it impossible to travel.

“What’s so special about them?”

Carefully, I rested my body in a c-shape, looking like a croissant cuddling with a stick.

♤I’m not sure about what others can do, but at least I can grant my wielder a class.♤

“The witch thing?” I muttered softly, still unsure of its meaning and properties.

♤Well, yes. Even though that one wasn’t on my list, yet, by logic, it’s certainly one of them.♤

“I see...”

♤Basically, a class is a set of abilities that corresponds to its meaning.♤

“Oh!” Eagerly, I replied, interested and excited by what felt like a proper explanation. Yet, I wondered, if that was so, then this witch class. What was it all about? What could I get from it? How would it impact my future?

♤You weren’t surprised by me talking, yet, it sounded like I was the first talking item.♤

“I had a lot in my mind, and... You kind of appeared out of nowhere.”

♤Hope?♤

“Yes, a surging hope in a deadly pinch.”

♤There is something I don’t understand though.♤

“What is it?” I pulled the fur out of my eyes to be able to see the umbrella."

♤Your story along with the reason why the goddess was angry at you.♤

“Among my kin, my lineage was distinct from most of them.”

♤Oh? Do tell me more!♤

I smiled faintly at how excited and interested it had made it feel.

“Throughout the generations, there were only two differences among us. The black hair that I possess and the white hair others did.”

♤Let me guess, you guys didn’t like one another based on the color.♤

I opened my mouth, dumbfounded, shocked at my core that he knew of the discrimination my family had gone through.

“Yes!”

♤That’s too bad.♤

“Yes...” I stole a glimpse at the sky. It had this strange blue aspect to it with white clouds. Never had I imagined there to be two different colors.

“Despite the trolls on the other side grabbing us in the river, so they could feast on our bodies. My parents always believed that the goddess had enough power to defeat them.”

♤Yet she didn’t.♤

“After what I saw today, she had plenty to destroy the entire island with those insane flames!”

♤Then she didn’t care about you guys enough.♤

The tone came out on the cold side, feeling bitter to me. But it was the undeniable truth. 

“That was one of the reasons why I rejected her blessing, causing her wrath to befall on us.”

♤Interesting.♤

Was it really that interesting to the umbrella? Despite trying for a moment, there was nothing much to it. It sounded to me like what anyone would do in my shoes.

“Would you have done it any differently?” 

♤I would’ve taken the power and use it against her if it came to it.♤

‘Didn’t think about that,’ slowly, I thought about this matter. Had I made a mistake? Whether that had been one, I was yet to know. If I could ever meet the seed, then, without a doubt...

♤What was the other reason that you didn’t take her power?♤

“An ancestors’ tale passed on our side of the tribe.”

♤If only I had popcorn with me, and of course could eat them...♤

“Popcorn?”

“A certain food from the world where I came from.”

“Oh...”

“Now then, do tell me more about this new companion of mine!”

“Alright!” I grinned with a hint of happiness at how nice this umbrella was to me.
