Chapter 7: Ch7: Rain’s new partner

The scent of burned wood made me place my hand in front of my nose, covering it to a certain extent. Yet, I started coughing. The abnormal speed of the engulfing flames surpassed anything I had ever seen.

♤Hang in there kid!♤

I nodded lightly, dropping to my knees without removing my hand for a second.

♤Tell me what is happening.♤

From the words I received mentally, I understood that whatever it was, it couldn’t see the danger approaching.

“I’m on an island, and the goddess got mad at me, and... and everything is on fire. It’ll catch up to us soon.”

 ♤That’s... insane.♤

“Ugh,” the top of my hand started burning, causing me to feel sick. On it, a mark appeared: two arrows side by side aiming in opposite directions.

“The voice that speaks for the goddess said-“ as I was about to warn the thing in front of me, a different message came through.

♤The contract between the item and the wielder has been established. Upon the laws of this world, you will receive the class-♤

Static, more headaches. 

“No!” I shouted, but to no avail. The mark on top of my hand burned, and then it faded. Only then, the announcement came forth.

♤The class you have received is Witch.♤

“What did I get?” I shouted, keeping my head low.

♤This one wasn’t on my list!♤ 

I could tell it was incredibly upset by the tone of its voice. Yet, I dared not utter a single word. This could mean that we were going to die in the flames. That the end was coming.

♤My first ability seems to be a function.♤

“A what?”

♤It’s called open or close.♤

“Open or close?” Suddenly, a click, and then it opened, expanding in front of me like a cone. It was quite large, and I felt a small breeze coming from it open.

‘Maybe I could...’ with my brilliant mind, I lifted it and aimed it at the upcoming fire.

I repeated the ability’s name relentlessly, causing it to open and close in succession. This caused a soft breeze to push a bit of the smoke away.

♤N-no! Ah! You’re overdoing it!♤ it screamed in peculiar ways, sounding like moans of pleasure from the friction of opening and closing in succession.

‘What a useless ability,’ quickly, I complained in my mind. I was completely screwed. It made me regret for a moment that maybe picking the goddess’ blessing would have been a better choice in the end.

With no other option, I grabbed some food and water and walked closer to the shore where the smoke hadn’t reached.

“What do we do now?”

I heard what sounded like a long sigh. It was just like the final breath of recovery after a lengthy exercise.

♤Check your class and hopefully, the first ability will come in handy.♤

“How do I do it?”

♤The class name in your mind. It’s a part of you now.♤

‘Was it wit... witch?’ Naturally, I focused with great intent on the strange word, closing my eyes on the process.

For a brief moment, there was only me and the darkness. And in it, I saw myself holding a rock. It was a memory: one of the times when I played with the brothers. They had accused me of cheating before. Sadly, it had been one of the last memories I’d have of them. 

In that particular space, I’d throw the rock on my hand and, unlike the typical down curve, it floated softly downwards. Softly, it entered the hole, granting me a win, and more frustration from the two of them.

‘Thank you for showing me this,’ I smiled at them briefly, unsure when I’d see them again.

With a spark of energy tingling in my hands, I opened my eyes.

“I can make things float!” 

♤It’s great that you sound happy, but how is that gonna help us?♤

He had a point, what use could have such an ability in this situation? Both the flames and the smoke had a will of their own. And unlike the rock, it didn’t look solid enough to grasp and cause it to float.

My instinct was screaming of danger just at the thought alone. Harming my hands for a tryout didn’t seem wise. But what other option was there?

I looked around in a bit of panic, time running short. The temperature was quite warm, warmer than usual during this time. 

“Object... floating...” an idea popped. Something completely out of the box.

I picked a basket, filling it with water, and then grabbed another one, placing any food I could find. After placing both on the shore. I watched over the near waves melting down on the sand, combining in the same singularity.

Quickly, after waking up from my sudden trance with the sea, I turned the black object upside down.

“Open or close,’ just like I hoped, it opened, creating enough space for me and the two baskets.

“So, what are you really?”

♤I’m...♤ it coughed before resuming its speech.

♤They forcefully reincarnated me as an umbrella.♤

My eyes focused on its appearance, unsure of the name, but understanding that’s what such an object was called.

♤It was an object people in my world used to protect themselves from the falling rain.♤

“Oh...” now I could understand its peculiar use.

♤Back then we’d close them to become easier to store them and open them whenever we needed to.♤

“That’s smart!”

♤Yes. It was quite the creation.♤

Rustling sounds followed, causing the umbrella to whine in despair.

♤What are you doing to me?♤

“Pushing you into the water.”

♤Hey! Hey! Hey! I’ll definitely drown!♤

With the water almost touching it, I whisper, “float.”

Defying the laws of physics, I felt it become super light. Thus, I pushed it towards the water, watching it stumble a tad ahead.

“Hum?” As I approached it, the floating returned. 

“Is my power stronger the closer I am?”

I entered the inside of the umbrella carefully, taking a seat on top of the basket. 

To our fortune, the power was enough to keep it in the air, a few steps from the sand.

I pointed with a finger at the upcoming waves, “float that way!”

And it followed my command.

Thus, our journey began.
