Only a few yellow rays were coming from behind the numerous small clouds, which were aligned in the sky in such a way that resembled battalions. At the top of the mountain, the four survivors left were now starting their descent.
"So Paul was the messenger all along?" Akira asked.
"Something doesn't feel right. He said that he made a pact with the witch for those powers, but she never actually needed him, did she?" B was thoughtful and was looking at the ground.
They were descending a steep hill with gravel. If not careful, one could easily lose their footing in the countless small rocks and end up dead.
Luke was slightly behind helping Akira get over a more difficult and slippery part of the narrow path.
"I don't think we will find many monsters this high up, it's probably too dangerous and they won't come close," he added while stepping carefully.
"There is no time to waste, the more we advance, the better. Hurry up, guys!" Oliver was trying to rush them a bit despite the danger.
"And to answer your question, B... I've got something for you," he said as he stretched out the letter to the girl.
"So you changed your mind and decided to show it to me, you moron? Also, call me Saori, that's my real name," she smiled as she took the letter off his hand.
"Okay, I'll tell the other two as well. Take your time with it." He patted the girl on her shoulder and went to Luke and Akira to help them.

Seeing that she was now alone, Saori unfolded the letter and started reading it right away.
Dear Saori,
First of all, stop being a crybaby who cries for everything.
"I'm not a crybaby, stupid gran," the girl was stuttering embarrassed as tears were starting to fall down her cheeks already.
It's unbelievable, you kids only do stupid shit and then cry over it. Now to get serious and add some light to that unwoken brain of yours...
There are five witches in total and one is me. We have been gifted from birth with an overwhelming power that flows through our veins. The things we understand and perceive are on a level far beyond human reach. Hence, the humans feared us, forcing us to hide in the woods to avoid unnecessary bloodshed and conflict.
Despite being born from normal people with no magic abilities, we were labeled as a different species. We've never gotten to meet our fathers, nor could we go and meet other people, so mother was our only true love.
Eventually, an agreement was reached between us, the witches, and the kingdom that we lived nearby. It didn't last for long. Human greed knows no limits, so they broke it. They took from us what we loved the most, which led to an era of chaos where witches ruled through fear over many parts of this planet.
They swore revenge on humankind and not just the kingdom that wronged them. They scattered around the world to instill fear and torture people in unimaginable ways before killing them.
Right now, humans are alive only because the witches want them to suffer before completely wiping them out. My instinct tells me that the end of the world is only a few years away.
Emer may be the strongest witch, but I think even she has some limits. You should be safe once you get past these mountains as the curse will not reach that far. The monsters are forced to remain in this area if they don't want to die on the spot. If they leave the zone cursed by Emer, they lose their lives.
If we are both still alive, let's meet on the 10th of September at the top of the paddy fields. They are located north of Bird Valley Village. It's not far from the Kingdom of Riveria. Bring the rest of the punks with you!
"She somehow even knows my real name. We'll meet you there, gran!" Saori said smiling.
"Let's go, everyone!" the girl shouted as she started running towards the small group that was already far ahead down the steep hill.
"Come, Sa--" Luke got interrupted as she came flying down past them with a jump. She almost touched his head with her foot.
"Wow! Impreeeeesive!" Akira added looking after her. She was already far ahead in a matter of seconds and she was speeding up.
"It's daytime, you should be fine. I'll meet you later, punks!" Saori said with a playful smile pulling her tongue out at them. She was clearly happy now knowing that Anta may still be alive.
"Here I was, afraid for nothing. I thought the letter would just make her cry even more." Oliver thought in a loud voice.
"Silly old man," Akira replied as he went ahead to try and catch Saori.
"She's like fully recovered already and it's only been a few hours. What a beast!"

Another three days passed without too many unpleasant occurrences. The group had to move down the steep hill for a very long time which exhausted them and inflicted pain in their knees, but with breaks, they managed to recover.
A few monsters attacked them on the second night, but Saori managed to defend the small group and kill the creatures before they could inflict any damage. The bond between the remaining survivors was getting stronger by the day.
It was now the third night since the messenger's massacre and they were camping by the fire without being too worried about possible encounters.
Saori had been training all day. She was always going ahead to practice when the sun was out. The girl was now doing some stretching with one leg bent to the side on the ground and the other one stretched in front. With her hands, she was pulling the toe of the stretched leg towards her.
Having recently taken a bath in a river close by she was all wet, plus due to wearing only shorts and some bandages around her chest and back, she made for quite good material for Akira and Luke who were staring at her while blushing. Her clean skin was shining in the light coming from the fire.
"Damn, dude. She's gorgeous."
"I feel you, man. It's been a long time since we've done it with her."
"You think we should try it again?"
"Yo, lads. We're running out of sticks, go get some!" Oliver got down to the two youngsters with an annoyed smile and put one hand on each.
"Yea... On my way!" Luke answered.

"That's exactly what I was thinking. Let's get some sticks," Akira stood up and went to help Luke.
The following day at noon, shocked to see a wooden signpost in the middle of nowhere, they stopped.
Don't go through the swamp without me! was written on the post.
"Hmm, that's rather interesting. Is someone here?"
"HEEEEEEEEEEEEY! Is anyone around here?" the girl shouted hoping for an answer.
A very short bald man in his 50s made his appearance from behind a tree. He was wearing a green medieval braided tunic with a black belt around his waist along with dark brown boots.
"Hey, fellas! I'm glad to finally see people after three years of living alone here by the swamp."
"Hal! Is that you? Holy shit, man! Haven't seen you in such a long time, thought you died."
"Ha, ha, ha!" the man laughed with his mouth wide open. Meanwhile, his fists rested on the sides of the man’s body. He smelt of sweat and piss.
"YOU STINK!" Saori pinched her nose with her fingers and took a few steps back to avoid the smell.
"Who is she?" he asked curiously.
"Don't mind her, she is a beast, hence no manners," Oliver took the girl by the neck and started rubbing her head with his knuckles.
"Hands off me!" the girl caught his hand and threw him to the ground on his back by twisting his arm. She then used her left foot to press him on the neck and deny his breath.
"I give up! I give up!" Oliver was struggling to talk and hit the ground with his hand to show the girl she won.
Saori let him go and smiled proudly. "As long as you understand your place, we are good, muscles-for-show!"
"That's going too fa--" he got interrupted as the girl put her toes into his mouth.
"Shut your mouth and suck on my toes."
The other three were looking at the two amazed by what was happening. The girl always did something unexpected, but to put her toes in the mouth of their leader was beyond mindblowing. That was a first for everyone. Nobody dared to defy Oliver until now.
"I'm having an erection," Akira added.
"You've got problems," was Luke's reply.
"Ha, ha, ha, ha!" Hal was again laughing, "What a noisy bunch of fellas I've got here. Follow me, we'll go to my tree house and talk there."
They were all in a lovely small house in the tree. The moon once again pushed the sun away to take her place in the sky as the queen of the night. The five of them were drinking some hot water to warm themselves as it was getting cold now during the first days of September by the swamp.
Because of her acute sense of smell, Saori was the only one unable to relax and was staring menacingly at Hal. He was stinking too much for her sensible nose.
"It feels so gooooood to finally be in between four walls after all this time," Luke said as he stretched his legs.
After a quick glance around, Oliver asked, "How come you've been here without anyone noticing you? And how come you are still alive?"
"Ha, ha, ha! Don't mind me, I'm a laughy fella. Ha, ha, ha!" once he stopped, Hal continued...
"When I left the village I pretended to suffer from the sickness like most of the people my age. I just put a big plastic ball on my back underneath my clothes to make it look like I had a sudden malformation over the night, then I left through the main gates. Ha, ha, ha!"
"Were you not afraid to leave?"
"Me, afraid? Ha, ha, ha! There was no hope for the village. It was doomed long ago. I just decided to put my life into my own hands and leave because the others were too scared to do so. It wasn't easy and I kept on hiding every night up in the trees. I think I was just lucky. I had a few scary encounters, but nothing an old man like me cannot manage. Ha, ha, ha!"
After a short break, he took a serious tone and continued without laughing.
"My instincts tell me that this is as far as I can go alone. Why? Weird sounds are coming from the swamp as if someone is sharpening his knives, and they come from all directions. I don't know why, but I also have the feeling that I'm on somebody's plate who is looking at me lustfully ready to cut me and eat me ALIVE!" the man raised his voice at the end to try and scare the rest of the folks.
Everyone was looking at him not scared in the slightest.
"If you think this will scare us after what we have been through, you're wrong," Akira said.
"Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Can't blame an old man for trying to have some fun. It's true, though. Trust me, I've been through many things during my life and my instincts never wronged me. I know that if we try to pass through the swamp, we'll die. But don't mind all that crap yet... How about you guys? How did you get here?"
Luke and Akira swallowed dryly when they heard about the swamp. They were scared and everyone could see it just by looking at their faces. Meanwhile, Saori seemed intrigued.
"Very long story. 80% of us who left the settlement are dead, and the rest most likely died in the village during the attack," Oliver replied promptly.
"Don't you see monsters around here at night? How have you survived for so long?" Akira was curious.
"At night sometimes I see them, yes. But they don't come any closer than twenty-thirty meters to the swamp. It feels like they are avoiding something. It's almost like they are scared of someone hiding underneath the muddy waters. It's pitch dark in the swamp even during the daytime because of the numerous big trees, yet the creatures don't risk getting in there. That's why I'm safe here." Hal sighed and took another sip of hot water.
"Listen, everyone! The sad reality is that the world has changed a lot during the years that we've been stuck in the village. There are many unknown creatures and strong species out there. The swamp is probably going to be our worst obstacle so far. It stretches over a very long distance and it will take us at least one extra week of walking through the dark woods filled with monsters to go around." Oliver's determination could be seen in his eyes as he stood up.
"We'll take the shortcut and go through the swamp!"
Saori smiled when she heard his decision. This was her best domain. She knew how to use the dark to her advantage perfectly and she wanted to put into practice the hard training she's been doing these past days. Meanwhile, on the other side of the swamp, far in the pitch dark, someone else with a big triangular face smiled just as enthusiastically. He has been waiting for this moment.
"Let the horror movie begin! Hee, hee, hee!"
