After they said goodbye to the guild members, Anta and Saori decided to visit the daily street fighting competition grounds. It was an event organized by the local people and anyone could join as long as there were still enough places left. One would probably have to spend all day in the village if they were to win every round and reach the final.
Anta brought Saori here to have a look at today’s fighters and get a rough idea of what to expect tomorrow when her turn comes. No fee was required to join because plenty of people were paying to watch; that was enough for the organizers to make a comfortable living.
The old woman put a couple of coins in the pocket of a bald and tall man who seemed to be the leader. He nodded to her.
“There are obviously not the same people fighting every day. Sometimes you’re lucky and get to fight against couch potatoes who came here because they ran out of money and don’t have much of a choice, while other times there are plenty of stronger, experienced fighters who simply join the tourney to make a name for themselves.”
“You clearly know things around here, gran. Yet, you never told me anything about this village.”
Saori was suddenly hugged from the back by a man reeking of alcohol who was barely able to keep his balance anymore.
“Hey, beauty. I don’t think this is a place for a young girl like you. Why don’t you join this beast and come find a bed together?” The man shamelessly used his thumb to point to himself.
Seeing that he was getting completely ignored, the man touched the girl’s abdomen.
“Uuuu!” He was surprised to see how muscular she actually was under her clothes.
Next, he tried to touch her boob, but he stopped when he saw the threatening look on the girl’s face.
“Ok, ok. I get it.” The man let go and turned to leave. Ashamed and annoyed by the situation, he added one more thing, “You good-looking bitches reserve your crotches for muscular gorillas, you don’t need those with a higher level of intelligence like me.”
The beast girl didn’t even bother listening to what he said. Something else grabbed her full attention. She was staring in the direction of the ten meter square fighting ring surrounded by simple ropes tightly bound to wooden poles.
“Weirdo.” After a last glance back, the man went away.
Noticing the strangely serious look Saori had on her face, the old woman used her walking stick to gently tap her foot, but she got no reply. The girl was absorbed by something. She was standing still with her arms crossed, staring intensely at one point.
Anta turned to check, but the only thing she felt was a knight wearing gray and blue armor. He was sitting on a chair with his legs crossed supervising the competition.
“That man is keeping an eye out for trouble, and by that, I don’t mean in the ring, but outside the ring. The organizers don’t want the villagers to get involved in the fights.”
“You’re wrong, gran.” The girl replied promptly in a low voice as if her mind was far, far away. Her eyes were wide open. She was completely captivated by the person in armor on the other side of the fighting ring. “That’s simply not it.”
Saori was acting extremely strange, but Anta decided not to be a bother to the girl and let go of that thought. She didn’t feel any danger around.

The night was just around the corner and the wind was blowing increasingly harder with every hour. The two were now on their way back home on the gravel filled country road. A full moon was hiding behind numerous dark clouds that indicated rain.
It was so dark outside that they would normally need a lantern, but Saori had no problems seeing in the dark, and Anta was already blind, so it made no difference. She was holding onto the girl’s arm for guidance.
Halfway to their home, the old witch decided to break the silence.
“Tell this old woman what’s bothering you, child. Come on.”
“That armor… belonged to my father. He never used it after I was born. It was left hanging on the wall. According to my father, Salan, the armor will only hold one back after reaching a certain skill level. He said that the armor kept our enemies away due to its glorious past.”
“Really? Are you completely sure?”
“Yes, I believe that I will remember more of my past if I meet that thing again.”
“Thing? Was it not a normal human?”
“No, the smell was different.”
“Saori is a very cheerful and strong lady, but she is still young and has an incredibly difficult past. Who knows what might she have been through before I found her? I think her not remembering things is a self-defense mechanism of her body. She should let herself cry more often.” Anta couldn’t help but feel sorry for the girl. Saori’s tragic past would eventually catch up to her.
“You’re crying.” Saori noticed the tear falling down her gran’s cheek. “You’re sad, I can tell.”
“It’s fine. Nothing a youngster like you should worry about.”
The girl seemed to have still not recovered her normal cheerful attitude yet.
“So? What did you use in the bar to get information? Your boobs or your fists?” the old woman changed the subject to try and lift her spirit up a bit.
“Ha, ha. I used my butt in the beginning, then I changed to fists.” The girl replied, punching the air in front a few times.

“You let them touch it like this?” Anta grabbed her butt cheek firmly with one hand.
“W-W-W-WHAT THE HELL YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING, PEDOPHILE BABA?!” The girl screamed as she pulled away from Anta.
“You’re eighteen, idiot!”
“You’re sixty-seven, idiot!”

While the beast and the witch were having a friendly argument, the evil in the village was making its next move. The knight was there to make sure none could intervene in the affairs of the devils and it was watching even now. Its tale was more illustrious and sinister than anyone knew.
From the flat roof of a village house, from a few hundred meters away, the thing in armor was watching even now, but something was off about it. The knight figure was still sitting on its chair in the exact same position it did back at the battlegrounds. While its face was hidden behind the armor, the head was turning to follow the two distant figures.
As the rain started to fall, a flash of lightning accompanied by a boom of thunder hit the roof. Behind the chair, an unnaturally massive woman stood up. She was smiling with her overwhelmingly big mouth that she used to eat humans.
Dragnya opened her jaw making room for the long and split tongue that reached down to her belly button.
“Look at them messing around worry-free. Enjoy your little chatter as long as you still have air in your lungs, sister. It won’t be long until you two will be separated for eternity.” The witch put her hands on the knight’s shoulders.
“Let’s go run some errands, shall we?”
As it was ordered, the thing snapped its fingers and a dark fog started to form around them. They disappeared with the first gust of wind.

At midnight, somewhere in the village, in a rundown house with weather-scarred walls and a patchy roof, a young girl was looking out the window waiting for her dad to come back from work.
The girl was thin and average looking. Her hair was messy and unwashed, while her clothes consisted of dirty pajamas.
“Heeeeee… I wonder when my dad will come home. He’s always late, but he usually gets here at around ten. It is also rainy and windy… I really hope he will be fine.”
Troubled by the fact that her father was out in the merciless cold rain, the girl decided to light up a candle and get outside of her room, despite clearly knowing that she was not allowed to do so after sunset, especially when she was home alone.
Right then, outside the house, a man wearing a large floppy hat was dragging a huge bag with a corpse inside, leaving a clear trail of blood behind. In his other hand, he held a letter.
The girl first went to the bathroom to wash her face, then grabbed some thicker clothes. She was planning to go after her dad, even if that meant defying the rules imposed by him. Ten minutes later she was finally ready.
After running halfway down the creaky stairs, the girl stopped. She couldn’t believe her eyes. Her dad was there peeling the skin off the face of a corpse with a kitchen knife. And it wasn’t just one corpse. There were several of them, either inside the bags by the door, or laying around the room with their skins already peeled off… on the couch, on the desk, by the chair, and behind the curtains.
A circle was drawn on the floor in the living room using the blood of the deceased. Some of their limbs were also positioned around it as sacrifices for the future summoning call.
As she gazed at her father she saw he had many, many blisters, bruises, and cuts on his arms.
Scared, the girl wanted to scream, but she managed to refrain from doing so. After a few intense moments of watching her dad methodically butcher the corpse, she slowly turned around hoping she had not been heard. While covering her mouth with a hand to avoid making any noise, she carefully took the first step up the stairs.
She usually liked the noisy stairs, but now she hated them. One mistake could mean her death. For some reason, the little girl knew that if she got caught, she'd be killed.
Right then, at that moment, her only hope was to go to bed and sleep. Maybe, just maybe, when she woke in the morning, everything would be back to normal.
With two fingers, the man pulled his hat down a bit to cover his face, locked the door behind him, then grabbed a broom and turned toward his daughter who had almost entirely climbed the stairs to the next floor.
“D-D-Daddy?”
“Yes, my darling, just come down here for a moment. I have something very important to tell you.” The man evilly smiled under his hat as the clouds collided and a thundering storm echoed outside.
“Bedtime story!”
