Liam

I saw myself on that same lab table again, where the whitewashed walls stared back at me. I held my breath, trying to cope with where I was, my worst fears suddenly unfolding right before my very eyes. How the hell did I find myself back here again?! I thought I blew up the research facility! I thought I’d taken out those bastards for what they’d done to me for nearly twenty years?! I started to freak out, those bright LED overhead lights intensifying in my eyes, making me squint and look down my feet, where two maniacal lab monkeys grinned at me.

I recognized them… they looked familiar. Only problem was that they had a few years shaved off of them…

It was then I realized what was really going on. I must have been dreaming, my consciousness scraping deep inside my memories to the earlier days I was in Sigma-RE. I thought that they were erased, and that those monsters took them away to hide more of their secrets. Yet, here I was, dreaming about those dark days, with a pimple faced Benjamin Bowser and a fatter Michael Richardson looking down at me in their lab coats like I was a fresh slab of meat.

I couldn’t have been older than seven, restrained top to bottom on the stretcher, with limited mobility. All I could do was move my head as I tried to wiggle my bare toes, my entire body numbed from the shoulder down.

“Hey, there’s the guy! Our super star!” Benjamin chortled, his greasy face lowering over me. I felt light-headed as my jagged vision continued to adjust, and the room finally stopped spinning. “You’ve been out cold for hours! We couldn’t start the show without you, sleepy bear,” he proceeded to taunt me, weaving two electric probes in his hands. I noticed I had no control over my body, and that this lucid dream came with strict restrictions. I could only watch as everything unfolded, but I was in no rush to shake myself awake.

I wanted answers, the same answers Pamela had been bugging me about in those therapy sessions. Maybe if I tuned in long enough, I could find out how all of this started…

“You are very lucky boy, to have been born with such unique qualities. I almost envy you.”

“Don’t talk to him like he’s human, Bowser,” Michael grumbled behind him, while Polish folk music continued to play softly in the background. “He’s an animal! No worse! Filth! Nothing but a threat to humanity.”

“Ah, but we are here to make it all better! We were assigned regulation of your treatment process. It make take weeks, months, or maybe even years, but we will perfect you, Liam. We will make you the perfect solider… and this unavoidable threat will crumble before our feet!”

Michael snorted. “Pojechać, you’re getting a little too ahead of yourself. We first need to spread his DNA. We must be prepared, and never underestimate what’s out there.”

“Yes… space, a massive cold void, with wonders beyond our imagination. We are but insects to the rest of the universe. I bet your family sees us just the same. Insects… ready to be crushed.”

“What?” My voice crooked, my face scrunching at him confused. “My parents would never—”

“Parents?” Benjamin looked over to Michael, and Michael glanced right back at him. And then, they both busted out laughing, ridiculing me. “Johanna and Lander? Your imposter parents? No, we aren’t referring to those stupid meat bags. What I’m talking about is your true parents, your alien mommy and daddy. The ones up in space!”

“Alien?”

Michael chuckled. “What a gullible piece of work.”

“Eh, they probably didn’t tell him. Didn’t see a reason to. It isn’t necessary.”

“Why don’t you enlighten the specimen?” Michael suggested with a condescending smile. “It’s not like he is going to remember it, anyway.”
Benjamin shrugged. “I don’t see why not. It’s the beginning of my shift. I could use some entertaining story times.”

“Please, I don’t want to be here!” I pleaded, my voice still hoarse and broken. My seven year old body strapped down and drugged begged two criminals for freedom. I was naïve back then, I didn’t know any better. All I really did was amuse the yes man and the fat kid with a blood fetish, my eyes watching him sharpen his scalpel while he wiggled his huge hips to the beat of his music.

“I’m afraid you have no choice. You see, your parents brought you into the clinic to see Dr. Edgar Jones. He specializes in abnormal growth in children. At least, that’s what he wanted your parents to think. Truthfully, he was a candid replacement for the real Dr. Edgar Jones, after he found out that you had magical powers! He disposed of the kind doctor and fed your parent’s lies, that your super human abilities were signs of a rare disorder.” He chuckled. “You can see how foolish and desperate your parents were, to belief such a tale. I mean, come on? Super human strength, energy absorption… even, explosions? Under what biofunctional abnormality do those fall under, really? Your gullible parents took the bait, giving the good doctor everything he wanted. You were adopted, Liam, a mere baby in an alien pod sitting at the front door of the Chago residence. They told them everything. Can you imagine how quickly it all unfolded? From a trip to the ER, to a seat in an extraterrestrial research facility. Your parents were fed lies upon lies, until the doctor persuaded them to give them the biggest piece of the puzzle. How did this mysterious super powered baby reach Earth? The answers were lost in a device way before our time, hidden in a compartment beneath your infant pod. It took the doctor months to decipher just a simple line embedded in that com device, because you see, the woman behind the message was speaking in another language. But no worries! We have smart people working in our sector! One line was truly all we needed, and it was enough push to straighten your parents out, and take you in.”

“She said, he is coming! He is coming!” Michael mocked, flailing his hands in the air. “The bitch kept wheezing and shuttering, making it more difficult to hear what she was trying to say. Not to mention, the feedback was atrocious, so much static and noise in the background. It sounded like a warzone.”

“She wanted you to escape. We suspect the woman on the line was your biological mother, a pretty woman she was, too. She was trying to keep you away from this dangerous foe. But… we are afraid that this threat will soon make his way here. Because if he is too much to handle back home, in your planet filled with supernatural beings, then best believe, he would be more than a handful for us regular humans.”

“And that’s where you come in!”

“We are still deciphering the rest of the code, but the alien distress message was a clear enough motive for what we are prepared to embark in today. We stand for humanity, and we will not bend before alien scum! We will not let this monster flatten our world, and destroy our people!”

I looked back at them terrified. I couldn’t comprehend any of it. My heart thumped wildly in my chest, the subtle beeping in the background amplifying the more I panicked.

“Ah, don’t worry, you won’t remember any of this anyway. Because that shit is going to mess with your brain, you little freak!” Michael said, pointing at the metal electric probes in Benjamin’s hands.

“I’m not an alien! I’m not a freak!”

“Poor kid’s in denial. Why don’t we put him out of his misery?” Just like that, Michael cocked his arm back and punched a child right in the chest. He went in full force, and I felt it, all of it. He knocked the air right out of my lungs, and I swore I was about to pass out from that brutal punch. “Ahey! It worked!” He pumped his arms up in the air, cheering himself on. For what, I wasn’t sure, not until the terrible feeling in my chest started to gradually fade away.

“We stuffed some weakening juice inside of you! It made you lose your invulnerability! Our first successful test! Nikkita would be proud! This calls for a celebration!”

“It’s too early to celebrate, Bowser, look at the graph on the monitor. His powers are spiking right back up again…” Michael said disappointingly, then squinted his eyes on the flat screen on wheels. “Wait… what is this?”

“Be careful, his core is heating up!” Benjamin wailed, rushing across the room in a hot hurry.

“Fetch the serum!”

I remembered feeling this way before, that time I took out the barn house with all of those animals in it. I blew up, the sensation of intense heat running up my limbs and bubbling in my chest. I had no idea how to start or stop it! It came on its own. I couldn’t imagine how terrible I’d felt back then as I sat and watched me frantically look for a way to escape, breaking through the enforced restraints around my wrists and ankles.

Michael didn’t seem so worried about blowing up. I had the power to reduce bodies into ashes, and yet, he faced me with a hateful glare burning in his eyes. “Look at you, trying to blow your way out of here! Well, it’s not going to happen! I won’t let you and your planet doom us all!” I got a clean wallop across the face, and the younger me couldn’t understand how I’d went from weak to strong in seconds. Hell, it didn’t even tickle, the look on Michael’s face changing like a switch. He knew he was fucked, the brave chunky bastard, but I didn’t have it in me back then to kill the both of them. Not that it would matter, anyway, feeling a needle jab me right at my neck, shutting me down, and forcing me awake…
