Ranked fifth lowest team out of the Delta Region super heroes, not the greatest way to start my time in a crime-fighting organization. I had to take that L with my head up high, because I was team captain, and it was my job to keep morale up. But shit, that couldn’t have gone any worse. I felt like if we’d had more time left, Rynn would have jumped me just to shut me up. She blamed Aster and I for the fuck up, and had no problem reminding us of that while we made our way back to our ward. Dessi kept quiet throughout our walk of shame, while Aster bickered with Rynn, up until we unlocked the front door with the code key, those two relentlessly going at it.
“Your brain must be one-sided, you know-it-all hypocrite!” Aster barked at Rynn. “Saying that I was the one who wanted to show off and take matters into my own hands, when you’re the one who thought she could take care of all twelve guards by herself!”
“I could have if your disgusting tentacle monster hadn’t stepped on the trap and exposed me!” Rynn retorted.
“If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have even known where they were posted at!”
“I get it, putting that extra effort in to compensate for being the weakest in the group! Sure, whatever, but don’t jeopardize the mission for your own selfish gain in the process, and bring me down with you!”
“Excuse me? Weakest?” Aster gasped, subconsciously summoning a shadowy construct to lift her feet off the ground. She hover-skated over the living room, following Rynn inside. “You need to take a good hard look in the mirror, snow pea, because I’m not the weakest supe in this apartment right now, you are! As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were the weakest in the entire base!” She scoffed. “I mean, weapon forging? How is that honestly even a super power?”
I tightened my teeth nervously. “Aster—”
Rynn gave Aster a villainous side smirk. “How about you keep talking and find out?”
“Wait—”
“Please, if you think that you can stand around and threaten me, then you must be a bigger idiot than I thought. You can’t tell what’s so obvious to everyone. Makes me wonder how you managed to take care of those little girls, the way you so carelessly walk around like you’re big talk, when you can’t even protect them without TBC’s help.”
“You slutty bitch!” Rynn fumed, dropping her hands on the coffee table and forging arm canons out of them! It all happened so quickly that I couldn’t react, Rynn launching two hot beams at Aster dead center.
The heavy artillery caught me by surprise, but that was the least of my worries. Rynn was on the edge and committed to taking Aster out. Unfortunately for Aster, she took those high beams to the gut, a gaping hole torn through her stomach, while the other end of that blast exploded right into the kitchen.
My chest tanked, the explosion that echoed in my ears soon after dropping me over Dessi. I crouched behind the living room couch for cover with her, the sound of our neighbors in the next ward escaping into the hallway making me poke my head out.
All I saw was smoke and flames, feeling Aster’s blood splattered on the side of my face…
“Rynn…” I gasped, looking around at her devastating mistake while trying to quickly get on my feet to run damage control.
“Haha! Well, that escalated quickly. You actually managed to tag me, good for you!” Aster said, the delirious look on her face bringing my jaw on the floor. She was still standing, her bloody gaping wound immediately sowing itself back up. “But, you only get one, snow pea! And since you so kindly dropped my blood levels, I’d be more than glad to take some from you!”
Bloodlust, loss of control—Pamela’s last words about Aster started to resonate with me. It was like a mood switch but something far worse, Aster summoning a horde of black familiars from the floor to attack Rynn.
“Hey, that’s enough!” I growled, Aster not even glancing my way.
“Keep your nasty freaks away from me!” Rynn retorted, engaging her canons again at Aster’s demonic-looking tentacle familiars.
“My cute little sticky pets, have at her, please. Pin her down for me,” Aster giggled, and when Rynn’s canon started to roar, I intercepted.
“Rynn, no!” I shouted, knocking her arm up to ward off her next shot. Instead, she pierced the ceiling with her cannon burst fire, the feedback knocking us both on the ground. “What the hell are you doing?” I growled.
“Get off of me!” she insisted, elbowing me against my chest as she struggled to get up.

“I can’t let you do that. Look at all the damage you’ve done already! And for what?”
“Back off!”
“You can’t let her get to you, Rynn.”
“No, seriously, get off! Those one-eyed globs are right on top of us!” she begged, Aster’s bloodlust still bent on feeding on her teammates.
Shit, not this again! It was annoying enough having dealt with Nunu, but three of those things spelled big trouble. Especially since they had this annoying ability to regenerate, my stomping on their grabby tentacles not helping us at all. I didn’t want Rynn opening more holes on campus, the apartment I hadn’t even had the pleasure of getting acquainted with already turned upside down.
“Ah, a two for one special! This meal just keeps getting better!” Aster purred.
But just as I was about to go full berserk on them, Dessi pulled herself from cover. “Please, stop this!” she cried, and immediately the tentacle monsters retreated to… Dessi?
“The both of you, please stop fighting!”
Was Dessi mind controlling Aster’s pets?
“We are a team, we shouldn’t be acting like this! We are only making things worse for us, by showing The Brother’s Code that we can’t even get along let alone fight together! Here,” she said, and immediately marveled me in two seconds. Dessi shape-shifted right before all of us, into a splitting image of Rynn.
“Aster,” she started, getting in front of the demoness with an apologetic tone. “I am sorry for hurting you so deeply. Will you accept my apology?”
Well, I could see why she felt like she had to do that. There was no way in hell Rynn would apologize, but I doubted this gesture could put a band aid between the two girls.
“What? Are you seriously siding with this blood-sucking bitch?” Rynn cried, scooping herself from off the floor.
“Well, Rynn, you did start it by bringing our apartment in flames when you attacked Aster,” Dessi turned to sheepishly remind her.
“That’s because this harlot can’t keep her comments out of other people’s business!”
“This isn’t fun anymore,” Aster moaned in disappointment, lifting her finger up and dematerializing her stolen pets. “How else am I going to eat, now?” she said, and then a devilish grin caught her face. She was up to something nasty, and before I could stop her, Dessi’s legs were scooped up by black constructs. Around her ankles, the shape shifting pink-haired supe was wrangled south, slipping right through the floorboards like a disappearing act. I rushed over to try and grab her by the arms too late, the last image of her etched in my brain of her flailing and wailing in fear.
“Dessi!” I cried, slamming my knees on the floor as I missed her.
“I couldn’t let her get in the way again…” Aster said cynically, approaching me with lust filled in her dark eyes. “I need to feed, don’t you care if I survive, Liam?” she said behind a phony pout. “I promise, I will only take a little. I wouldn’t want to drain you out before I could enjoy you tonight.”
“Back off, or I’ll blow another hole right through that blood pit of yours!” Rynn interjected, standing to defend me in front of Aster with her canons.
“Oh please, I dare you!” Aster said with her eyes growing wide. “Because the hungrier I get, the more powerful I become!”
“What in the fucking hell is going on in here?!” Pamela boomed, barging in on a scene that she’d never forget…
