Chapter 6: The News of A Demon

[3rd POV]

A Demon is quite uncommon. That is why, when it was revealed a Demon has appeared, it quickly became the main talk on social media. It quickly made its way from being known only in Andtol to many countries within 5 days.

With the appearance of a new Demon, Andtol has prohibited exiting homes except for the most necessary things, like buying food and water.

With the lockdown in place, the Demon has also stopped its activities, much like New Dawn predicted. Which revealed its intelligence to be quite high when compared to other Demons.

After revealing the places where it has appeared, it became apparent that this Demon was very... strange. Demons rarely manage to identify humans, which made the social media blow up in questions of how it can be innocent, since it only killed criminals. But when faced with the crime of mass murder, those people were quick to stop supporting it.

"That... sums up what happened, I guess. They haven't said anything about expected abilities other than super strength. Trying to make me limit my abilities to avoid showing you something you don't know?" Said Aria.

Aria was on her phone, searching for the publicly available information on herself.

It looks like I am quite limited in movement right now... Surveillance is increased at night time, they keep watching you for me. Not to mention my huge body, they probably think I have some sort of shapeshifting ability to hide for 5 days without being caught.

"They've hid it from the populace, but they are searching for me outside as well. This is worrying; if this keeps going on, I won't have any place to be able to move in." Muttered Aria.

The girl turned off her phone as she decided to start studying. With school being suddenly closing due to lockdown. The school has sent a message to all students that they are expected to study the lessons that would be taught to them. With each teacher emailing what lesson they would teach on that day.

Time passed as she studied till evening, drilling the information of not just the lesson, but the entire chapter for each of the subjects in her mind.

Its better to make some free time anyway. To be able to make my movement, I need to not be suspicious.

Aria then exited her house. Closing her door, she was immediately greeted by a New Dawn officer, which slightly startled her. She didn't expect to meet one seconds from exiting her house.

"Greetings, may I ask what you are doing outside, lady?" Asked the male officer. He looked like he was at his late thirties.

"Hello," Aria greeted back, keeping her best poker face to hide her nervousness, she then answered. "I was just going to buy some food."

"I see. Stay safe, and buy food for a long time, its best to not go outside." The man said, then made way for Aria.

While buying food was what Aria was going to do, it wasn't like she would just buy food. She would also check the amount of officers, where they patrol, and if possible, find some gaps in the patrolling. She would need an empty space to transform to her Arachne form. Transforming inside her home would just be equivalent to screaming who she was.

Aria started walking down the street, looking around, finding where the officers were. She soon reached the closest supermarket, it wasn't a long walk away from her home. But as she walked she realized just how much officers the streets had.

Isn't there way too many of them here? I passed by 10 officers till I reached the store. Isn't the store just 5 minutes away from my house?

Officers were everywhere. New Dawn wanted to deal with the threat as soon as possible, but why would that be? Surely it wasn't just because she was a Demon, right?

As she returned to her home, she began contemplating just how is she supposed to move in such a densely packed area.

For starters, lockdown would mean she can go missing for a while, but not too long. And she didn't know if the officers had a member who would regularly check the houses with detection magic. Thankfully detection magic was rare, so that was unlikely, but still needed some testing, just to be safe.

Second, the patrols are almost perfect, there is almost always one officer in every street she walked, even if there wasn't any officer. One would quickly start patrolling the empty street, keeping all gaps in security very tight.

Third, the officers are limiting the freedom of the citizens. Which means they likely suspect that the Demon can shapeshift into a human.

Aria sighed, this is going to be more difficult than I thought

For now, she would keep practicing and improving all of her abilities, and hopefully find a way to gain information from New Dawn, aside from their database. Which is dangerous to enter, since she would risk exposing her location. The less danger the better.

Not much work could be done in this state, but that wouldn't last, New Dawn would get tired from all the fruitless patrolling eventually.

This patrolling then increased in intensity for one more week, which New Dawn then stopped their patrols, seeing that it bore nothing.

[Andtol Manager POV]

This is really, really bad...

The new Demon wasn't found despite our best patrols. Even using some detection magic, but we found nothing wrong with anyone. Maybe it knows of the situation, so it decided to hide? No one has gone missing, so that must mean it came from outside the city, bypassed the barrier, and went inside.

...That's unlikely...

It most likely knows about the search, and it was, somehow, a already a citizen before. This would mean it can transform into a human. Is that its ability? Or a natural ability that its body has? There is too little information to work with, and a very big threat to this city.

Not only that, if I don't find it anytime soon, I would start receiving pressure from the media and other branches, possibly even my superiors...

"Just why did you have to be here...?" She said.

Knock knock knock

The door of my office is being knocked. Looking down at my desk, I still give permission to them. "Enter..." Though my voice sounded lifeless, it only reflected how I felt.

The door opened as an employee entered. They were one of the officers patrolling the city. More specifically, they were the reinforcement sent to us from the capital.

"Greetings, ma'am. I've come to report." He said.

Report... Did they find something!?

I suddenly got excited, but I didn't let it show on my face. Or perhaps it did, since I probably just went from a lifeless husk back to "business mode" in seconds.

"Unfortunately, we haven't found anything concerning on where the Demon Nightmare is. But what we did find was traces of both earth and body enhancement magic as we investigated the abandoned buildings. We have also inspected the bodies of the smugglers, and found that none of them could use magic." He said.

Why did I get my hopes up... Ugh..... Still, that is a start at least, but this definitely makes it B-rank. We need even more reinforcements. A Demon that can use two types of magic...

"Which means, it can use both earth and body enhancement magic..." I say, to which he nodded.

"Is that all?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Alright, you can leave."

He exited my office quickly, perhaps he knew my mood.

This is getting more troublesome by the minute.
