Chapter 1: Why Do I Exist

I place my hand on the door knob and enter my bedroom, it’s dark so I decide to turn on the light by flipping the light switch on, as I do this the fan that the light is attached to starts spinning faster and faster until it maintains a constant speed, I place my hand to the switch next to the light and turn the fan off, after I do this I start walking towards my wardrobe and open it, then I place my hand on the top drawer of the wardrobe and take out a rope of medium length, I approach the fan and throw the rope over it before standing up on my desk and placing the bottom part of it around my neck, I am going to move my feet off the desk and allow myself to hang but before I do such a thing I hear my phone buzz, it’s the strangest thing I think to myself, no one ever tries to get into contact with me, not even my own family, so I remove the rope from around my neck, get down from the desk and take the phone out of my pocket, to my utmost surprise it’s a friend who doesn’t normally talk to me anymore, the message itself reads

“Hey, I know it’s been a few years but I was wondering if you wanted to go to a restaurant, I just recently heard of a really good one in town”

This friend of mine is a writer, we met a few years back just after I graduated college, he was a nice person but we were different people and our jobs added some distance between us, if I were to make a guess I would say it’s been about 3 years since we last spoke. Even knowing all that and the fact that I was about to take my own life, it felt like I should say yes so I chose to reply

“Yeah, i’d love to hang out some time what’s the restaurant and when do you want me there”

He gave me the name of the restaurant and told me the day would be today, it’s odd but I felt happy that he asked this of me, so I grabbed my coat and my keys; I approached my car and left for the restaurant.
