I enter the restaurant and see nice round tables all lined up next to each other as well as a few cushioned seats close to the walls, my back isn’t in very good shape so I hope that I get seated in one of the cushioned ones; I approach the bar nearing the restaurant and ask
“Umm, i’ll have… just… just a rum and coke please”
The bartender replied
“Alright”
And began to poor my drink, one of the waiters talks to me
“Do you have a reservation sir?”
“I, my friend might, uh h-he’s the one who invited me”
“Well, would you tell me this friends name and i’ll tell you if he’s on the list”
“Oh yeah, right, his name… it’s, uh Neil, Neil Freud”
“Yes, it would seem he is on here, would you like me to direct you to the seat”
“Y-yes please”
The waiter shows me where I’m supposed to sit down, to which I comply, after waiting there for a couple minutes I decide to leave
“Yeah, he probably forgot anyway”
I think to myself, I leave the table but then I hear a voice
“Hey, Ron, I am sooo so so so sorry i’m late, there was a massive traffic jam and somehow every light I hit was red”
I chuckle and sit back down
“So, what have you been doing in the past few years”

He asks me while smiling, I stay silent for a few seconds, my face frowning as I take a sip of my rum & coke, I decide to finally respond
“I got a job, as a-a… as a grocery store manager, I uh, i’m sorry that it’s not as interesting as you probably wanted to be”
He responded very kindly
“Actually, I just wanted to hear what you’ve been doing”
For some reason unbeknownst to me, those words lifted my heart and made me smile, and for the first time in my life I felt I could speak clearly
“What have you been doing, last I heard you told me you were writing your ‘masterpiece’”
He laughs at my remark and replies
“Yeah, I did say something like that didn’t I, y’know it’s strange to think about”
“What is”
“The idea that I, the person who said this word or phrase, could forget about within an instant, but it could stick with another person the rest of there lives, it’s insane to think about, well, from my perspective anyway”
“N-no I feel the same way, we just don’t know how much are words can hurt until we see the damage we’ve done, that’s what you’re trying to say right”
After speaking the most amount of words i’ve said in years he replies by saying
“Yes!, you get me Ronald”
“Uhh, thanks, N… Neil”
I think this dinner will be an enjoyable one.
