On the final day of this scientist's existence, they were preparing what could be called a "typical experiment" on this station – an attempt to create solid light by pumping ludicrous amounts of electromagnetic energy into a spherical volume precisely one centimeter in diameter.

This experiment, while it may seem overzealous, is perfectly suited to this particular space station.

See, this particular space station is a science vessel orbiting in the L1 point of a binary star system, equipped with dual fusion siphons and the highest power systems ever built.
Its purpose is to enable the highest energy experiments ever conceived.
In fact, since its creation (and subsequent construction), it has not only contributed heavily to the current Universal Model, onboard scientists have developed a method for capturing black holes.
The fully realized technology based on that method is the single best mass-energy converter ever made.

In comparison to such space-shattering achievements, today's experiment could be considered almost tame.

Thus were the general thoughts of the team of three that were to be present.
Thankfully for our story, they were entirely wrong.
When the breakers flipped, relays energized, and lasers precharged, the sheer energy throughput of the not otherwise scheduled binary fusion funnels was at their full command.

The project lead released it.

In the first nanosecond, all was normal.
The beams, condensers, and other electromagnetic miscellania were well under tolerances.
In the second nanosecond, the beams converged.
In the tiny space where they were to be kept, there was already a massive amount of light straining to escape the controls.
Halfway through the third nanosecond, something changed.
Suddenly, the condensers were no longer drawing power.
Nearing the fourth nanosecond, the energy was containing itself.

The incidental radiation was reaching the walls of the chamber.
By the fifth nanosecond, there was no chamber.
The spontaneous anomaly sucked all nearby power dry, and released a cross-spectrum blast that melted the room as it reached the floor.

Let us skip ahead by a few.

In the next microsecond, all life within three hundred meters was vaporized.
The station's systems didn't fare much better, though it stayed intact beyond the first twelve meters.

In the next millisecond, the entire station was dead, though held objects had not yet begun to fall.
The wavefront was now a third of a thousand kilometers away.

Soon.
Something feels the front.
Such a powerful burst drives it to return fire, in a nearlight salvo.
By luck, one projectile is aimed perfectly.

Now.

Things clatter to the ground across the station.
Emergency circuits flicker to life one by one.
Casualties number an even two hundred and thirty six.
Something moves.
