Chapter 19: BEM

A blessing emission measurement, or BEM, is a medical test conducted by hospitals to determine if a child has a blessing barrier. The blessing barrier describes passively radiated energy that blessing users emit, similar to body heat. In addition to the improved physicality granted by the twenty-fourth chromosome, this energy differentiates a blessing user from a foresaken and a mutant.

With devices and electrodes the blessing barrier is measured. Depending on length, width, height, density and frequency children are rated from zero to five.

There is no Foresaken status for Level zeros, contrary to popular belief. In the case of Level zero, the individual has the twenty-fourth chromosome but does not manifest any blessing barriers. People who carry two recessive genes on the twenty-fourth chromosome are known as 'recessive blessing users'.

Veronica nodded as Teka sat still, putting two and two together in her mind which stopped her from explaining further. She felt a sense of relief in the privacy of her mind. There was no need for her to explain concepts that she hadn't studied since freshman year. As she inhaled another relaxing puff of smoke, she briefly basked in the sight of her companion becoming increasingly shocked.

The brunette looked around cautiously, anticipating Micha's sudden appearance at any moment. She did not want to sit through an hour-long session of him reciting his junior English essay on blessings along with all the nuances of the research topic. Study breaks are necessary for girls!

"Was he level five?" Teka asked, her eyes wide as if she were staring at a monster. Veronica didn't blame her. She would doubt anyone who claimed to be friends with a level five, especially a dead one. Level fives were big because level five meant you got a BEM of one-hundred and nothing less.

"Yes, but not by birth." Hearing this, Teka nodded with understanding. It was a rather common occurrence for someone to 'level up' after studying and training their body or blessing or just growing naturally. This is what produced 'pseudo level fives'.

"What about Micha?" Teka mumbled to herself, pulling on the scraps of knowledge she had from doing a paper on the topic. One of the only things written about polymorphs, also called copycats, was that they were part of the exception to the rule. Of the nine or so polymorphs tested, the highest level exhibited was a BEM of about twenty, roughly level two. This honestly piqued her curiosity since research into polymorphic physiology was banned by P.A.T.R.I.O.T.

"Ask him yourself when you see him." Veronica sighed, finishing her pizza slice. "Knowing how much he likes to boast about his knowledge of blessings he'll tell you anything about the topic, even his own."

Boom-

In the distance, the girls heard a deep, meaty sound. Upon seeing the light in the distance, they ran to the window and glanced through the glass. The sound of screeching metal was accompanied by the sight of a building in the distance collapsing as two things shot into the sky.

"GET DOWN!" Veronica yelled. Sensing the incoming attack, Teka covered the two of them in shadow, however the attack was not easily blocked.

Although the girls were not hit by just one scream attack, the first scream stripped them of their protection, leaving them vulnerable to the second wave. Like an emp blast, the crystal wave shattered the windows, shocking the girls while riddling them with crystal shards. Both girls fell, darkness already consuming them as they became another battery for the scream maker.

What triggers such an attack?

Well for that we will have to go back about three hours.

An unknown metal bed supported the young man. He was connected to roots that glowed an ominous red as unknown energy flowed inside him. People lay on beds of metal covered in lattices of red vines on the other side of the roots.

These people were monsters, child murderers, child rapists and traffickers. People who by all means are the lowest of the low in the prison hierarchy and deserve the slow and painful death Micha was subjecting them to. Slowly, he was absorbing their cells, souls and life force a painful process that left them unable to scream or fall asleep.

"That sneaky bastard!" Micha laughed with hidden rage.

The flashdrive given to him had a bug and a tracker, both military grade, and it slipped his attention initially. He only picked up on the presence when he used inanimate memory to see and hear the events the flashdrive witnessed, even its construction.

However what really pissed him off was that his brother was selling him out to the most dangerous enemy imaginable. "Fucking P.A.T.R.I.O.T."

"FUCK!FUCK!FUCK!FUCK!FUCK!FUCK!FUCK!FUCK!" Fortune swore as she walked around in her physical form. Being deeply connected to Micha, she could easily read his memories which drove her to swear in various languages. She was worried, petrified, no words could describe her fear of the devilish organization.

Those demons are looking at her baby, who was sold out by his brother, that piece of shit. You took his love, then his innocence, now you're here for his freedom? She was plunged into a bold spiral of rage as her body began to glitch wildly.

"ILL K&*(%$IL^%$#@@$L Y#%$^^@U" She screamed as white tendrils shot upwards into the darkness of the room's ceiling.

"Calm down, Fortune." Micha said, feeling himself falling into fear. The thought of those monsters interfering with the war or being on the business end of their militant branch was enough to make him frightened beyond measure.

"H(*$2(#*$-oW C(*(#!_An YOU EXPECT ME TO BE CALM!" Fortune raged using all her will not to hit her son for his ignorance. While the two were prepared for a larger scale war they were not ready for an international body, and they were completely in the dark about their motives. "For all we know they could be sending you to The Null."

"Not in a million years." Micha snapped as he reached the final stages of absorption. "We have to keep a cool head. The scroll of wisdom is still on its cooldown after all."

It could be argued that the scroll of wisdom, a power containing all knowledge of the past and present, is the greatest search ability ever created. Ninety-two hours remained until the two had cooled down and could be used freely. That is ninety-two hours in which the two were all but blind. Considering this, Fortune's anger and Micha's worry were understandable.

"What do we do?" Fortune asks as she props herself up on the metal bed her child rests on. "How do you suppose we deal with this problem?"

Micha kept quiet, he had not a single clue on how to deal with such a monster. Yes, he had the support of various families and clans but that was nothing more than a drop in an empty bucket compared to an international agency.

His mind then wandered to the scroll of wisdom. He wondered if he could use it again after using 'otherworld characters' to negate its rest time.

"No, I'm still practicing that ability." Micha thought, remembering the immense strain it took to simply write three 'otherworld characters'. "Sacred energy is still on its cooldown. Gosh I'm really in a bind."

"Yes, we are in a bind!" Fortune laughed sarcastically before sighing "we didn't plan for this."

"Yup, we gotta improvise." the white haired male scoffed as the roots around him were absorbed back into his body. Rising from his bed he shifted his left arm into various organic and inorganic forms before returning it to a human form. He had consumed enough for now. The light of determination filled his red eyes as he continued "but that doesn't mean we can't prepare something of value. The balls are in the Archangel's court, and who knows what he might send."
