T/N: So, new side project. Friendly reminder, this has some unsavory parts and when we do get into gore etc stuff I will give a warning at the start of the chapter.
And here is, chapter 3 of Witch, Open Your Eyes
After they got back into the car, Fang Daichuan knew that he should talk and be more active to get more screen time, but he was really sleepy. He had been filming all night so at that moment, his whole body ached. He seemed to have strained some muscles in his thighs during the scene where he had to fall from a horse. He felt like he’d been forcibly split open.
Don’t get angry with me, Lil’ Zhou, I will sleep now, and I will definitely be well-behaved and act my best when I get to the place. Fang Daichuan thought in his heart and immediately fell asleep.
When he woke up, the car had stopped.
Fang Daichuan had handed in his cell phone so he didn’t know the exact time, but judging by the colour of the sky, it was probably around six o’clock in the evening. They’d been driving for more than five hours and had already arrived in Shandong.
As soon as Fang Daichuan opened the car door, a humid breezee immediately poured into the car, breaking through the air that had stagnated all afternoon. The wind carried the unique touch of saltiness from the sea. Fang Daichuan climbed out of the car excitedly, raised his head and breathed in the fresh sea breeze, intoxicated.
“The sea! It’s really the sea! I haven’t seen the night sea since I was a kid! It’s so beautiful!” Fang Daichuan shouted half-truth half-lie; the sea in front of him no longer looked as kind and peaceful as it was during the day. Waves of dark sea water crashed into the rocks near Fang Daichuan’s feet, the foam rolling endlessly.
He looked back, and the camera continued to roll dutifully. The mixed-race brother carried the camera and recorded his back expressionlessly.
Fang Daichuan immediately forced himself to act: “When I see the sea, I become aware of how insignificant we humans are! Such a magnificent sea stretches so far you can’t see the end! Space and time is boundless! This is the sea billions of years ago, and it hasn’t changed since ancient times. We didn’t even exist at that time!”
Ol’ Chen stood beside him and lit a cigarette: “Billions of years? The earth is only 4.6 billion years old. No one knows what this place was billions of years ago! What’s more, this place couldn’t possibly have been a beach, have you learned about plate tectonics? Do you know what the vicissitudes of life mean? Nothing is ever unchanging.”
Failed to pretend OTZ*…
(T/N: OTZ is on raw)
(PR/N: I was trying to find an acronym at first but nothing fits so I think it really might just be an emote text like someone on the urban dictionary site suggested; the O is the head, T is the hands/torso, and Z are the legs. Kind of resembles either a crouching or running man.)
However, Fang Daichuan had his own way of grabbing screen time, and those who quickly learn from their mistakes and are down-to-earth also get very popular these days. He adjusted his strategy, no longer pretending to be a male god. He immediately turned his head and exposed his full face to the camera, putting on an awkward expression. He guessed that this would be cut into a joke segment in the later edits, with a line of artistic words or three black lines on his head.
“Where are we going next? What about the others?” Fang Daichuan forcibly changed the subject.
The mixed-race brother looked up at him: “There will be a helicopter to pick us up and we will go straight to a deserted island.”
They even use deserted islands, Fang Daichuan thought. Huo Long Guo was indeed rich and powerful, even using the entire island. Helicopter appearances were not uncommon. In recent years, the pressure of competition in the reality show market was increasing. Not to mention helicopters, they’d even started to use paragliders. There were also shows in which actors are robbed and hijacked by terrorists. In comparison, what they’ve displayed so far is still nothing.
A helicopter flew over very quickly. The jet black body, the bright red logo, the thundering propellers, and the heroic appearance of flying over the sea from far away was really cool.
Fang Daichuan immediately turned on his variety show mode, turned his head up to the vehicle in the sky and started acting dumb.
“Wow! Rich and powerful! So sexy! This kind of entrance really is domineering. I’m sure in the later stage, this scene will get a very special effect.” He said, smacking the mixed race brother on the shoulder and shaking the big camera in his hand.
The little brother silently stabilized the camera, glanced at him, and said nothing.
Why so cold? Fang Daichuan felt perplexed.
He could tell from first glance that Ol’ Chen next to him didn’t have any experience acting in variety shows, and honestly he couldn’t deal with him anymore. Not only did he refuse to cooperate with him, but he kept glancing at him with a ‘are you mentally retarded’ look. Fang Daichuan complained in his heart. Why are you looking at me like that? Don’t you add drama to yourself now, can you not wait for the director to add that part for you?
However, Fang Daichuan didn’t say anything because he was considerate of the other party, as an artist who was used to being foil for the older generation.
The helicopter hovered not far above the sea.
Within the boundless seas, between the turbulent waves, stood a lone rock, a shiney black helicopter hovering over that rock. In stark contrast to the cold steel that represented mankind’s top technology and the unrestrained wild howling of the sea, the three warm and fleshy human beings standing below looked simply too small and insignificant.
Huo Long Guo has always liked to take shots from unique perspectives. In the past, when encountering such scenes, it was indispensable to use an aerial camera behind the helicopter to look down from the helicopter and film this kind of dramatic disparity as much as possible. Fang Daichuan squinted at the tail of the helicopter, but found no aerial filming equipment.
Who is the producer this time? Isn’t it Huo Long Guo’s exclusive director and cinematographer? You’re not following the routine? Fang Daichuan questioned silently.
The helicopter hovered as though it was going to land, but stopped when it was still more than ten meters above the ground. The wind from the helicopter could already be felt on the ground. At that moment, a rope ladder was thrown down from above, as well as a safety rope.
Ol’ Chen probably hadn’t watched many reality shows before, so he became startled and started hiding behind Fang Daichuan. But when he thought about it, it must be really difficult for him to climb up to a helicopter that way at such an age. Fang Daichuan said: “Mr. Chen, you can go first. It’s okay, there are safety ropes.”
Ol’ Chen waved his hand, and ambled back as he talked, trying to find the vehicle they had used to come. “It can’t be done, I can’t do this, it can’t be done. Can I quit? I don’t want to play anymore. I-I really can’t do it at this age.”
The mixed-race brother didn’t say a word. He shifted the camera to his shoulder with one hand, took out a gun from a pocket with another, and pointed it at Ol’ Chen.
Hey, Fang Daichuan thought to himself, I was wrong about the old man, he absolutely can act! Why didn’t I think of this way of grabbing screen time? The audience would definitely love to see this!
Ol’ Chen was worthy of being an old actor, his acting skills continue to roll. His face was pale, and the acting was as good as real: “No, no, I’m going, I’m going.”
He trembled as he firmly tied the safety rope to his waist and inched up the ladder step by step onto the helicopter. During this period, he would look down at the sea several times. Each time he did this he would stop, close his eyes, and shake the safety rope, shivering on the ladder, his calf jittering.
Fang Daichuan hated this way of robbing screen time. He looked up at the old man acting and secretly counted the time. He estimated that this old bastard took at least half an hour before he managed to climb into the chopper clumsily. When he was about to reach the opening, he even loosened his hand and almost went down. Fortunately, there was a safety rope tied on his waist, and the crew onboard quickly grabbed him.
This whole fiasco would probably get cut into about ten minutes, but not the thrilling scene at the end. Even the helicopter had trembled with it. Maybe that clip would even get broadcasted three times? It also has a good potential to be used in creating suspense in the trailer.
Fang Daichuan anxiously watched Ol’ Chen climb up. He knew that for this kind of reality show, the editing time for each section was fixed. The more time the bastard took up, the less time he had. Perhaps his old man who was already one foot in the grave hadn’t achieved much in life so he had to participate in this show and fight tooth and nail with a bunch of youngsters. But at this moment, he could only comfort himself; this old bastard has a clumsy and poor posture, so he can’t grasp the audience’s focus. It doesn’t matter how much time he robs, what matters is how deep an impression is left.
The mixed-race brother then turned his gun toward Fang Daichuan, motioning him to go up quickly. Fang Daichuan was very cooperative, pretended to be scared and said, “Don’t point at me, I will go up now.”
He deliberately put on a show. He only wrapped the safety rope around his waist a few times, stepped on the stone surface, and jumped straight onto the third rung. Fang Daichuan had been practicing martial arts since he was a child so his muscles were naturally defined and eye-catching, not because he trained in the gym. He knew that in the age of male gods, little girls would eat up this act, so he used all his abilities to climb up beautifully. The tight T-shirt outlined all fine movements of his muscles and he felt great about himself.
“Moving clouds and flowing water, body as light as a swallow.” Fang Daichuan internally complimented himself in an imaginary bullet screen*, and finally in one big move, he released the ladder and leapt into the cabin using the momentum from his back muscles.
(PR/N: A pretty common feature in live streams and even some MMORPG games nowadays—you’ve probably seen it before; comments ‘fly’ horizontally across the screen ‘like bullets’.)
Bravo!* He shouted in his heart and imagined a bullet screen exploding with a barrage of words: The male god is so handsome! That last leap of the male god is simply full marks! The male god not only looks good and has a good figure, but also has great acting skills and plays extreme sports so amazingly well. It is unreasonable that he’s not popular! Applause for the male god!
(T/N: It is like this on raw)
He closed his eyes and leaned against the door of the cabin intoxicated, feeling the violent wind rushing from below.
“How come there’s one more?!” Fang Daichuan was still immersed in his own world, when he heard a person next to him ask in a puzzled way, in English*.
Fang Daichuan came back to his senses. He kept in mind his low IQ brainless thug setting, and pretended to not understand. He looked left and right, and observed the situation in the cabin.
(PR/N: Might be obvious but just in case, this was originally a Chinese novel with a Chinese setting. The statistics from chinahighlights.com claim millions of mainland Chinese study English but less than 1% are conversational so being fluent English is kind of a ‘rich educated person’ thing. Read more here.)
The cabin was full of staff in black suits. They were all foreigners and their clothes were exactly the same as the mixed-race brother below. The foreign guys all had scary faces, and looked very intimidating. Their arms were unnaturally thick. He didn’t know where Huo Long Guo got such a group.
There was a camera in the corner. Ol’ Chen had already been “held” by two big men left and right, sitting in the corner of the cabin with a dejected look.
Still acting? Are you that addicted to acting? Fang Daichuan glanced at him and secretly complained.
Two big men also controlled him in an instant, pressing his shoulders firmly. He could tell that this guy was the real deal. But Fang Daichuan was here to make money, so he did not resist.
Another person climbed up in the cabin following him. The mixed-race brother carried the camera on his left shoulder and climbed up from below with one hand, stepped up with his long legs, and slipped into the cabin.
Well done! Fang Daichuan sat quietly in another corner and cheered.
A staff member next to him asked in English: “What’s this? Why is there one more person? Didn’t you just say you only needed to pick up one person?”
“Don’t know. He climbed into the car and said he signed the contract.” The mixed-race brother also replied in English. He looked very cool, and was sparse with his words like they were gold. After the brief explanation, he sat on the side and stopped talking.
Fang Daichuan quickly explained: “I encountered heavy rain at the airport and the plane could not take off. The original itinerary couldn’t make it. I would be late if I waited for another car. Many thanks to Ol’ Chen and this little brother who let me hitch a ride.”
Several staff members nodded, and they no longer cared about the issue. The plane flew towards a small island in the distant high seas.
At the same time, CA256 landed at Qingdao Liuting Airport.
As soon as the plane stopped firmly, Xiao Zhou couldn’t wait to turn on the phone. As soon as she did, more than 20 missed calls flooded into the screen, all from the same number. Xiao Zhou was startled, afraid something had happened, and quickly called back.
“We are from the Huo Long Guo Werewolf show. Oh, is Fang Daichuan by your side? Why haven’t you come here?” There was a loud female voice coming from the phone.
Xiao Zhou quickly explained: “Oh, oh, I’m Brother Chuan’er’s assistant, Xiao Zhou, I am coming right away, I have arrived at Qingdao. We waited at the airport for a long time and didn’t see your car. Then the flight resumed. I was flying to come over. I’m at Liuting Airport right now.”
“Well, you can come out directly, we’ve arranged a person to pick you up.” Then the person hurriedly asked, “Has Brother Chuan got the makeup and everything else ready? The chauffeur has a camera, so we can just start shooting!”
Xiao Zhou was taken aback for a moment: “Huh? Brother Chuan’er isn’t with me? He already left in a car with another actor from the same program group. He should have arrived earlier than me!”
The speaker over there was more confused than her: “Are you sure?! Here in Beijing we only need to pick up Brother Chuan, there are no other actors! Brother Chuan’er’s personal PB* and the cameraman already rushed to the airport, but there was no one there at all!!!?”
(T/N: This is like this in raw. Also sometimes they calls Fang Daichuan with Chuan’er and Chuan er ge so well, I did not get it wrong, it is like that)
(PR/N: I think it might stand for Backup Photographer.)
