Julia

It all happened terribly fast. She had just seen Finn and Marko with an unclothed stranger, then a wolf jumped towards her. Pain. That was all she felt afterward.

Her shoulder hurt, as did her arm. She tried to protect her face in panic. Pain. Snarling. Someone pulled the wolf away from her. More growls.

"Mom, leave her be!" That was Finn's voice, then everything went black around Julia.

Marko

Finn's mother growled as he pushed her to the ground in wolf form. Finn cried. Josefine and Fiete came running out of the tent, followed by Peter and Leopold.

"Julia!", cried Peter, startled, and knelt down next to her sister. Leopold ran back into the tent to get his parents. Fiete held Josefine, who growled angrily and showed them her more than threatening teeth.

"What happened? Why is Julia hurt?", asked Fiete, struggling to stop his niece from attacking Finn's mother.

"She suddenly attacked her!" Finn sobbed. "Mom saw Julia and then pounced on her!"

"That's your mother?" Fiete looked at the two wolves, which now turned back. Marko was still holding the werewolf, who looked back and forth between them, angry and confused. She had blond hair. Just like Finn. Marko noticed for the first time how similar Finn looked to his mother.

"What's going on here? Why are you defending the witch?", she snorted angrily.

"Firstly, because Julia is our friend, and secondly! What were you up to? To kill her? That would have cost me and Finn our lives!", hissed Marko angrily.

"Seriously hurting her is enough for me!" Finn's mother, Elodie, growled. "She's holding my baby captive!"

Marko watched as Hanno and Flora brought Julia back into the tent. Leopold hurried away. Presumably to get bandages and maybe help from the centaurs.

"My little sister doesn't hold anyone captive!" Peter was now standing next to Fiete. His face was red with anger. Finn knelt down next to his mother.

"Mom! You're can’t do that", he whimpered softly.

"I don't understand that." Elodie looked at her son. "Why are you protecting the witch..."

Meanwhile, Josefine tore herself away from her uncle and ran into the tent. Fiete looked after her sadly and then put an arm around Peter's shoulders. Peter sighed and the two went into the tent as well.

"Mom. Julia is my best friend. My sister", Finn explained.

Julia

"Don't move. You bumped your head!", that was Leopold's voice. Julia blinked. She was lying on her mat. Leopold held her hand and Josefine sat next to him with her knees drawn. Tears shimmered in her yellow, eerie dragon eyes.

"What happened?", asked Julia, still a little dazed.

"You were attacked." Leopold smiled and brushed a few hairs from her forehead. "You have a concussion, a deep bite wound on your shoulder, and deep scratches on your left arm and abdomen. We were able to stop the bleeding, but that will give a few scars. The wounds had to be stitched. Luckily, one of the centaurs can do that. You have a fever, so you shouldn't try to heal the wounds."

"Oh... Why was I attacked?"

"Finn's mother is here. Elodie. She thought she had to defend Finn. She has certainly apologized a hundred times by now...", Leopold explained. Josefine growled but said nothing.

"Finn's mother? That's nice." Julia sighed. She had a terrible headache. "I bet Finn is delighted."

"Very. And Elodie is overjoyed to have her child back." Leopold kissed the hand he held. "But she attacked you. Are you thirsty?"

"Yes. I am."

"Good. I'll bring you some water."

Finn

They sat in the main room of the tent. He, Marko, his mother, and Leopold's parents. Peter and Fiete had retreated to their room, as Fiete couldn't stop growling at Elodie and this frightened her. Even an angry white dragon was more than just scary.

Leopold walked past them and came back shortly afterward with a cup of water, which he brought to Julia. Finn looked after him as he snuggled up to his mother. She was wearing some of Flora's clothes. The two were the same size.

"So... You fled?", asked Hanno.

Elodie nodded. "Yes. Exactly. I couldn't stand it anymore in the pack."

"Mom? Where's Dad?", asked Finn worriedly. Hadn’t he come with his mother? Had something happened to him? Were they divorced? And if so, was it Finn's fault? Because he had left?

"He's not here, Finn. It's a long story. Let's talk about it another time." She stroked his back.

"Alright...", Finn murmured softly.

Flora frowned. "You are without your husband…" But something caused her to change the subject. "Julia is a friendly girl. You shouldn’t have attacked her. That was very dangerous. And stupid. We live here with two dragons and one is a black one. You could have got seriously injured."

"And Julia is seriously injured", grumbled Marko. "She's only nineteen!"

"Nineteen? Oh no..." Elodie sighed. "I only saw the binding spell... And then... Only nineteen. Of course... It was for her sixteenth birthday, wasn't it? When they took Finn with them. She's almost still a child."

"I really don't know what to do now", Hanno said. "You attacked one of our children. I would actually send you away for that. I can't accept that!"

Finn looked at him startled. His mother nodded sadly. "I can understand that."

"But I can't take Finn's mother away from him", Hanno added. "And he couldn't accompany you. He has to stay close to Julia. The binding spell would otherwise punish him."

"Am I disturbing?" Amarillis burst into the tent. "Oh! Do you have a visitor? Hello! I'm Amarillis!", she introduced herself to Elodie, who was just staring at the girl sadly.

Flora looked at the young centaur a little annoyed. "You don't just enter other people's houses! Why are you here? Darling?"

"Oh! Mom sends me. In a few days, the big tribal meeting will take place. And this year it will be held here. Centaurs of other tribes will come. The meeting takes place every five years and this year here, with us. Mom told me to inform you. Our tribal elder has not yet decided on how to deal with the situation. Two of the tribes do not accept humans near them..."

"Not that too!", groaned Hanno.

Agathe

"I'm leaving tomorrow!", her husband announced. He stood in front of her with his arms crossed and a determined look. "I still think you should accompany me."

Agathe sat disgruntled in her office, staring at one of the letters the von Strahls had sent her. She urgently needed to convene a council meeting. "I have more important things to do."

"And that would be? What's more important than maintaining our good relationship with the vampires?"

"Dead soldiers."

"What?" Friedrich dropped onto one of the chairs in front of her desk. The chair creaked ominously.

"Dead soldiers. Border guards on the border to the steppe have recently been attacked by a black dragon. The dragon comes at night and grabs one of the soldiers to eat them."

"Oh. A dragon? Here?"

"Yes, exactly. We need weapons that can be used against dragons! Our soldiers are at the mercy of the monster!" She held out the letter to him. "That's why I can't come along!"

"The Council can discuss the problem while we are with the vampires. I'm sure they'll present you with a good solution." Friedrich read through the letter. "That sounds alarming. But maybe the vampires have something that helps against dragons? We could find out there. We kill two birds with one stone."

"Hm." Agathe thought about it for a moment. "The idea isn't even bad. Good. We go together."

Friedrich smiled with relief.

Fritz

The carriage rolled slowly along the road. In a few hours, he would be home with his family. Fritz smiled. But he still had an appointment.

"We're here", shouted the coachman. "Are you sure you want to do this shopping in person? You have servants for that."

The carriage stopped in front of a small, modest pharmacy.

"Yes, I'm very sure. It is healthy to do your own shopping from time to time. So that you stay humble!" A servant opened the door for him and hid his amused grin behind a bow. "Thank you very much. It only takes me a few minutes."

Terrific. Now I’m considered quirky among the servants.

The pharmacy had long since closed, so he knocked on the door. An elderly lady with long white hair and deep wrinkles opened it for him. "Your Highness! I was expecting you. Your order arrived shortly before closing time!"

"Wonderful!" He entered the pharmacy. The guards waited outside the door, as he had previously instructed them. The lady led him into the back room, where two grim men and a girl, perhaps fifteen years old, were waiting for him. The lady returned to the counter to clean.

"Prince!", one of the men greeted him. Hany, a childhood friend of Paula. Fritz had known him for about two years now. The other two were unknown to him. "I hope you bring good news? These are Jonna and her father Malio. Malio is one of our founders. His daughter has now joined us. The two were eager to see the prince."

Malio looked at him skeptically, while the girl seemed rather bored.

"That honors me!" He nodded to them, then turned back to Hany. "Paul and his wife are ready to deliver messages to the werewolves. I hope to soon convince my sister Ingried and her husband of our cause."

Malio cleared his throat. "And that doesn't endanger us? Working with princes and princesses? And several of them too?"

"Paul and Ingried have abdicated from the crown. I don't see any problem. The Queen has a special talent for making her children hate her."

That made Malio laugh. "Good to know."

"I'll go then."

"Of course!" Hany handed him a bag of herbs. "Here is the tea for a good night's sleep. As ordered."

"Wonderful!" The tea was Fritz's pretext to meet with the insurgents. In addition, the tea helped Paula sleep better at night. Many things worried her and robbed her of sleep without the herbal tea.
