Julia

In the afternoon, Josefine helped her into the main room. Julia was terribly dizzy, but she didn't want to lie in bed anymore. Josefine had protested at first but finally gave in. Whether Julia rested in bed or in the main room didn't really matter. Finn's mother, Flora, and Hanno talked there. Leopold made tea for everyone outside. Marko and Finn had gone to the river to pick more berries.

"Am I interrupting", Julia asked quietly, as the three adults were making serious faces. Elodie looked at her sadly.

"You are the princess?", she asked. "I'm sorry that I attacked you..."

Flora and Hanno looked at each other worried. Julia sat down with Josefine and leaned on her dragon friend. "I understand why you did it. My name is Julia. I'm not a princess here."

"My name is Elodie", the werewolf introduced herself. "I'm Finn's mother."

"You came here alone?", asked Julia. "Without your husband? The escape must have been hard."

"It was..." Elodie sighed. "And I don't know how to tell Finn about it."

"You don't have to talk about it!", said Flora quickly. "Not when it's such a difficult topic."

"No. It’s fine. I was just about to tell you about it... The girl can hear it..." A tear rolled down her cheek. Hanno handed Elodie a handkerchief, which she gratefully accepted. "The disease that has plagued the country for three years has broken out in our pack. It took a long time for help to arrive. Many have died. We had no medication. We begged the baker, who once supplied our pack with his goods once a week, for help. But even he couldn't do much for us. When healers finally came to the village to prevent further spread, it was too late for many."

"A spread?" Hanno frowned.

"We live close to the border. There are some human villages nearby. They didn't want to endanger them. Otherwise, they might never have helped us. But like this, some survived. But unfortunately... Finn's father, Frederik, didn't make it. And also the alpha couple, Marko's parents, did not survive the disease. His eldest brother Noah is now Alpha." Tears now rolled down Elodie's cheeks without ceasing. "I can't possibly tell Finn and Marko... I don't know how. Nothing kept me in the pack anymore, so left. I fled through the fairy forest and almost couldn't find my way out... Until I heard a dragon at night... I followed the call and found my way into the steppe. I wanted to go to one of the werewolf villages I'd heard about... And on the way there I smelled Finn... At first, I thought I was imagining it. After all, I had just lost my husband and Finn was out of reach for me. But then he and Marko were here..."

"Oh no!" Flora stood up to hug Finn's mother. "How terrible..."

"Who wants tea?" Leopold came in with a tray in his hands. Confused, he looked at his mother, who was trying to comfort Elodie. "Oh."

"We! We want tea! But let's drink our tea in the girls' room!", said Josefine quickly. "We better leave the elderly... to talk in peace!"

"Hey!", Hanno protested immediately. But Leopold did as instructed and poured tea for his parents and their guest. The three took the rest with them.

"Ok. What's going on?", he finally asked. Julia rested her head on his shoulders with a sigh.

"A minor disaster, I guess...", Josefine murmured. “Or a bigger one?" Then she turned into a cat and curled up purring on Julia's lap. Julia's fingers immediately found their way into Josef's soft fur.

"Finn's father and Marko's parents died", she said quietly. But not quietly enough. Too late she noticed that Finn and Marko were standing in front of her room and were about to come in. Both were pale. "That's why Mom is crying", Finn murmured, shaking his head. "She said it was all... fine..."

Peter

"You're cheating!", he shouted to the big dragon with whom he was involved in a huge water fight. Fiete had used his tail to splash Peter wet. Good. The splashing was an understatement. Fiete caused big waves.

His white scales shimmered in the sunlight and thick drops of water dripped from its feathered wings. He winked invitingly.

Peter did his best to splash the dragon wet, but the difference in size did not make it easy for him. Fiete nudged him with his muzzle and Peter fell into the river. "Unfair!", he protested, laughing. Fiete snorted in amusement.

The river had become lower in the last two years and the centaurs were therefore worried and waiting for rain. It had rained too rarely. Nevertheless, the water level was not alarming yet. There was enough. And clearly enough to lose to a white dragon in a water fight.

"Marko! Stay!" That was Finn's voice. The two saw Finn leave the tent and call after the wolf. Marko ran away in his wolf form. Leopold followed Finn out of the tent and flew after the black wolf. A black cat ran to Finn and rubbed his head against his arms. Fiete turned into a human again. "That doesn't look good. Come!", he said to Peter.

Now Julia also came running out of the tent. She wavered a little and was followed by Leopold's parents and Finn's mother. Fiete and Peter hurried out of the river.
