Lea

The students had arrived and moved into their rooms. Classes would start tomorrow. Lea enjoyed the first day of school when the students arrived, new friendships were made and she was able to greet the students of the first year. There had been very few. A small group of ten students, most of whom got their magic late. And almost all of them were healers. There were no seers and only two young wizards who could use manipulative magic.

Now, in the evening, she sat in her living room and drank a cup of coffee. She felt exhausted from the excitement. Benjamin and Chloe had returned from the laundry about an hour ago. She could hear the two laughing in their room. The two only laughed when they were among themselves. Lea enjoyed the cheerful sound. In the small apartment, they shared a room, but in Lea's estate, where they had all spent a large part of the holidays, they both had their own room, which had been furnished according to their wishes.

Shay came into the living room with a box full of cookies and dropped down next to her. "That was a long day, right?", he said.

"It was. Did you also find the mood among the students strange?"

"I didn't see much of the students, but... Yes... Something was strange. But I can't say exactly what."

"I feel the same way. I do not know... First so few new students and now this strange mood." She leaned against her best friend. Shay immediately put his arm around her.

"Do you think that's a bad sign?"

"I'm not a seer, Shay."

"Could the Queen find out if it's a bad sign?"

"Maybe? If she wanted to... But Mother is fully focused on finding Julia." Lea sighed. "I'm worried."

"You've been worrying a lot lately, Lea. Maybe you shouldn't worry?" He winked at her.

Lea laughed. „Shay!“

"What?" His grin widened. "That was just a suggestion."

Someone knocked on the door frame. The two friends looked up. Benjamin and Chloe were standing there. The latter rolled her eyes in annoyance.

"Can we have some of the cookies?", asked Benjamin quietly.

The twins both had light blonde, almost white, thin hair, gray eyes, and equally gray dragonfly wings. But their features were completely different. Benjamin had a very angular face, while Chloe's round face was gifted with a small nose and many freckles.

"Unless you have anything else to do with the cookies?", murmured Chloe quietly. Her brother bit his lower lip in amusement.

"And what exactly are we supposed to do with the cookies, you bullies?", snorted Shay. "Grab some cookies and then go to bed. You have to get out early tomorrow."

Both teenagers moaned and took two cookies from the box. Then they disappeared back into their room.

"Cheeky!" Shay laughed. "Although... Now, I have some nice ideas!"

"You've always been very creative. What do you want to do with the cookies? Hm? Shay?"

"Something wicked. Something unreasonable! Something... Erotic!"

"Erotic?" Lea raised her eyebrows.

"Yes!" Shay winked at her again. She rolled her eyes.

"A food contest!" And the elf grabbed the box and hurried away with it. His wings fluttered a little.

Lea laughed and hurried after him. "Hey! That's not how a food contest works, you idiot!"

"Nope! It is!"

"No, definitely not!"

The door of the teenage room opened and Benjamin looked at them annoyed. "And we're supposed to sleep with this noise, yes?", he called after them.

Cleo

Charlotte had rested her head on Cleo's lap. The two sat on the carpet in front of the fireplace and enjoyed the warmth of the fire. It was getting cool in the evening.

"To the steppe? I don't know." Charlotte sighed. "The centaurs are not very friendly."

"The steppe is the only place where I haven't looked yet."

"You weren't in the swampland either."

Cleo combed her fingers through Charlotte's hair and sighed. "If Julia had fled to the swampland, she would have been found long ago. No. She can't be there."

"I don't know..."

"There are only two of us. We can manage to look for her there. There are probably refugee villages! The centaurs let refugees into their country, but not soldiers. If we pretend to be refugees, it should be possible!"

"I still don't like the plan."

"But you're accompanying me?"

Charlotte laughed softly. "Never, ever will I let you do something so crazy on your own. Then my life would be terribly boring!"

Cleo pouted and tugged at Charlotte's hair. "It's not crazy. People often cross the border!"

"Centaurs, my dear!"

Julia

Josef slept purring next to Julia's head and Leopold had fallen asleep sitting down. Finn was also asleep. He lay in his bed with his mother by his side. She held her son's hand, but her eyes were on Julia.

"May I ask you something?", she said.

"Of course." Julia yawned. She was tired.

"How does it feel to have servants bound to you? All your life?"

Julia laughed softly. "I'm probably the last person you should ask this, but I understand why you're asking."

"What do you mean?"

"I never wanted to have servants. If I could, I would give them freedom right away. I don't notice anything of the binding spell."

"I shouldn't have attacked you. You are a lovely girl." Elodie's gaze wandered to Leo and then to Josef. "And you are very much loved. The young elf is your boyfriend, isn't he? And the dragon child? The older dragon is married to your brother? Did I understand that correctly?"

"Leopold and I are together, yes. And I didn't force him to. And Josef is... My brother. My sister. My beloved friend. I love Josef no less than Leopold, just differently. And as for Fiete and my brother, Fiete saved Peter's life by making this bond with him."

„What?“

"It's complicated." Julia laughed, but her wounds hurt. "But it's a good thing."

"And Finn and Marko?"

"My family. I love them very much! Who will ever try to hurt them will regret it!" She had to yawn again and infected Elodie. The wolf stood up yawning and wished Julia a good night.

"With such a good friend near Finn, I don't have to worry." With a sad smile, Elodie left the 'girl's room'.

Marko

He was alone in the room. Leopold had slept with Julia, Finn, and Josefine.

Marko felt terrible.

He heard his family's voices from the main room. Apparently, they were already eating breakfast. Lazily, he got up and left the lonely room.

"Marko!" Julia smiled pityingly at him. She leaned against Leopold, whose wings trembled restlessly at the sight of Marko. "Good morning. Would you like to have breakfast?"

"Isn't Finn here?" Except for Finn, everyone was gathered in the main room.

"Finn is still sleeping. We didn't want to wake him. He had a bad night", Elodie said. "Do you want to check on him? Maybe he's woken up by now and wants to have breakfast. His leg should be healed by now."

"His leg?" Marko frowned. After Leopold had retrieved him, he immediately hid in their shared room.

"It was broken. Go and check on him, please", repeated the former beta wolf of his pack. His home pack. Noah was now Alpha. That meant Levi was now Beta, or not? The son of Svea and Almin. They were friends of Finn's parents... How old would he be now? Sixteen? Too young for such a position.

One was born alpha or beta, unlike omega wolves. Finn had not inherited the beta gene. As weak as he was, he would have become an omega if his pack used this term for the weak. Marko's parents had been firmly convinced that every wolf had its strengths and therefore their pack did not need this humiliating rank. Noah had inherited the alpha genes. Just like Marko, but he would never become the Alpha of the pack. He would have to either submit to his brother or find his own pack. But here, far away from home, these ranks counted for nothing. Here he was not an alpha wolf. Here he was just Marko. The orphan.

A rankless wolf, like most in the packs. Just like most wolves were born. Without a rank.

How were his brothers doing?

When he entered the ‘girls' room’, Finn was already awake. "Marko!" He smiled cautiously.

"Do you want to have breakfast?"

"I'm not hungry. You?"

Marko shook his head and sat down next to him. "Me neither. Why did you break your leg?"

"Why did you run away?"

"My parents are dead!"

"My father is dead!", Finn replied. "Did I run away? No. I ran after you! I broke my leg in the process."

"You blame me?" Is it my fault? Is it my fault that you broke your leg? Do you want an apology for my grief? Marko could have beaten anything and anyone, that's how unhappy he felt. The tent seemed oppressively cramped to him.

"Of course not! But I would have needed you here. With me. I need you!"

Tears now rolled down Marko's cheeks. "And what I need? Your mom is here! I have no one! You don't need me." He couldn't stand to be in the tent anymore. "I'm going to the river!"

Marko jumped up and hurried out. He didn't hear Finn calling after him.
