Julia

Finn sat down next to Julia and looked at her with wide eyes. "I would promise to protect you, but I'm very bad at that. Should I get Leopold?"

Julia shook her head. "No. I’m sure he's in front of the tent too." Loud voices could be heard. "I should check!"

"Juli! No. You're hurt. You have a concussion. And a fever again."

"I'm still a witch who can use all three types of magic." Swaying, she stood up. "You're staying here. I don't want you to get hurt."

"Juli!" Finn stood up and wrapped his arms around her. "No! No! No! You've rarely used your magic for the last three years."

That was true. Except for the visions, she had stopped using manipulating magic after a few failed attempts and she used healing magic only from time to time. For smaller but annoying scratches. She could not cure much more. She still lacked a lot of knowledge. Magic made the centaurs nervous and Julia had no teacher to practice with her. "Stay here, Finn!"

"Please! Julia! No." Finn refused to let her go. Sighing, Julia wrapped her arms around him. Carefully, so as not to hurt him.

"Nothing happens to me. I promise."

"Good." He nodded. "And if it does, then... I'll bite you! Be warned!"  He snorted angrily.

Julia grinned. "Agreed." Then she walked out of the tent swaying. There stood a group of centaurs that Julia had never seen before. They weren't many. About five strangers. Elder Finja and a few other centaurs stood in their way. Flora, Hanno, and Leopold stood together in front of the tent. Marko and Elodie shielded them in wolf form. Peter stood behind the group and seemed uncertain. Fiete and Josefine stood by his side, fixating on the enemy centaurs with hungry eyes. Finja and another centaur, whose horse's body was grey, seemed to be engaged in a mental battle as they stared at each other intently while the other centaurs argued angrily.

"Julia!" Leopold hurried to her. "Go back inside the tent. Together with Peter!" Instead of walking, he flew a few centimeters above the ground. Leopold's wings fluttered nervously. His parents' wings also trembled.

But Julia didn't want to, no matter how dizzy she was. Leopold noticed this and held out his arm to her so that she could hook herself under him. "It's about me, right? Then I can't hide."

"You're hurt. You belong in bed!" Leopold tried to escort her back to the tent, but Julia refused. At the same moment, Finja was brought to her knees. Exhausted, she collapsed. The other centaur grinned. "Hand the girl out. And the other humans. The tribal elder is defeated, I have the right to kill the humans! Humans are not welcome here. Refuse and we will also kill the wolves and the elves. If need be, we will force you."

The other humans? Don't they know that Fiete and Josefine are dragons?  Julia became restless. She had no chance against a mental attack by the centaurs.

"If you get even one step closer to Julia, I'll burn you!", hissed Josefine and approached the centaurs. Fiete growled threateningly but stayed with Peter.

"Fienchen, don't!" Julia wanted to go to her, but the dizziness became stronger and she had to cling to Leopold. At the same moment, Josefine turned into a huge, angry dragon. A large part of Josef's former white scales had turned black or grey in recent years, and the feathers of his wings were also slightly darker than before. Only a little white and orange remained. The centaurs looked at him in shock.

"Is that a black dragon?", murmured one of the strangers. Josef showed his teeth. He was ready to breathe fire or tear apart his enemies. Julia broke away from Leopold and ran to her dragon friend. She stood in front of him and stared at the centaurs. Leopold remained rigid in fright in front of the tent. "Juli!", he said quietly.

"Josef is a black dragon and he wouldn't hesitate for a second to let you go up in flames!", she said threateningly, but she wavered a bit. Josef built up behind her. She looked at him briefly and shook her head. The dragon snorted angrily, but he bowed his head. Now Fiete also came to her and stood next to her with folded arms. She felt someone trying to get his way into her mind to control it, and she saw the gray centaur staring at her angrily, but Julia pushed the foreign thoughts away from her. The centaur wanted her to come to them voluntarily and submit. Julia did not intend to bow to his will. The centaur looked at her in confusion. She felt no different. How? Why?

Her headaches became more severe and small, dark dots formed in her field of vision. She ignored it. She couldn’t fall over now. With one hand she held on to Fiete's clothes. He gave her a quick, worried look.

"I wouldn't mind showing my opinion to a few centaurs!", he hissed. Long, sharp claws formed on his fingers, and large, feathered dragon wings burst out of his back. His teeth also became a little sharper and longer, and he showed them with glowing eyes. Marko whimpered.

Julia had never seen the dragon do anything like this.

Julia gave him a nervous smile. "Thank you Fiete. I can do it."  Then she closed her eyes and focused on the river. The water was bubbling. She felt sick, but she did not let go until a great wave formed and bent up to the frightened centaurs. Julia opened her eyes. "Do you have more demands, or is that enough for you?", she said.

The centaurs didn't know where to look. To the water above their heads or to the two dragons that silently threatened them and who were apparently held back only by Julia. "I think we've seen enough!", said the grey centaur who had brought Finja to her knees. "We are withdrawing. Oldest Finja? You have a powerful ally." The centaur bowed and his group followed him away from the tent. Relieved, Julia let the water slide back into the river and watched Pepe look curiously out of his father's tent. Then everything went black again. She felt two arms and soft feathers, then her consciousness slipped away.

Leopold

Julia was unconscious. Three hours had passed, but she didn't wake up. Mila, Aurels and Amarillis's mother, took care of Julia's wounds. The bite wound on her shoulder opened and had to be stitched again. Leopold sat at Julia's side again and watched as the centaur nimbly treated the wound. Fiete and Josef were again lying next to Julia as cats. Leopold suspected that the two simply liked this shape very much. Probably because Julia couldn't help kissing their soft fur. That made him smile. Two dragons trying to catch kisses? And Peter was also a little less reserved towards Fiete when it came to physical contact and showing affection when Fiete looked like a cat. Leopold had already seen how Peter also kissed the cat's light fur.

At first, almost everyone was lounging worriedly in the 'girls' room'. Peter sat with Marko, Finn, and Elodie. Marko and Finn's mother was still in the shape of a wolf and Peter stroked Marko's soft ears. Only Leopold's parents were not in the small room. Since space was a bit tight inside the room, Mila sent them all out.

Now he could hear them talking softly outside the room.

"The girl is a very strong witch. I saw the wave." Mila now renewed all bandages. "And I've seen the centaurs of the other tribe, the Pale Redbacks, retreat. It was only a small part of the tribe, but they are not to be underestimated. We had problems with them for years because we have different views. Maybe the dispute can be ended now."

Josef hissed softly, whereupon Fiete lay down on top of him. Mila blinked irritated.

"Do you really think so?", asked Leopold.

"That's what I think, yes. A witch with two dragons at her side? No one is stupid enough to mess with someone like that. And you are our guests. Finja spoke of you as part of our tribe in front of them, before chaos broke out."

"But we are not part of the tribe."

Mila shrugged her. "For Finja, this seemed to be the best solution to protect you. But as Julia just showed, you don't need that."

Fiete mewed in agreement and shuffled contentedly.

"Two dragons..." Mila sighed and packed up her material. "I did what I could for the girl. She should wake up soon and then she should really rest!"

"Thank you very much. Shall I accompany you out?", Leopold offered her, but Mila refused and made her way back to her tribe.

Leopold stroked Julia's hair worriedly. That woke her up. Julia blinked, then opened her eyes. "Leo", she murmured dazedly.

He sighed in relief. "Welcome back!" And Leopold kissed her forehead.
