Cleo
With the forest horses, they progressed very quickly and within a short time Cleo and Charlotte reached the marshland. They wore simple clothes so as not to give themselves away and pretended to be normal travelers who wanted to see the marshland and stay in an inn. Cleo pulled her hood deep into her face to hide it. Since it was raining, no one would be surprised.
The border guards let them cross the border without any problems, but they asked for the exact reason for the trip. Afterward, they wished them a pleasant onward journey. Cleo asked them for the nearest inn and the soldiers were happy to help. Charlotte turned around to them when they got in their way again. Cleo laughed softly.
"Don't worry. Let's find the inn!"
"Yes, good", Charlotte agreed. "Do you think it's far?"
"They said half an hour from here. We just have to follow the road."
"Delightful. I'm cold."
"You're always cold!" Cleo petted her horse's neck in amusement. "No matter how warmly you're dressed, honey."
"I'm clearly not dressed warm enough", Charlotte grumbled.
After a little more than half an hour they reached a small inn. 'Der Nebelhof' was written on an old sign. ‘Nebelhof’, which meant ‘foggy inn’. In fact, it had become increasingly foggy and they were lucky not to have missed the sign on the side of the road.
They kept their horses in an open stable and paid an elderly gentleman for the pitches, water, and food. The man, a mortal, smiled.
"You two are lucky. These were the last pitches. We are almost fully booked. A few kilometers from here the large horse and grain market takes place. Therefore, we have many guests. Are you two ladies here because of the market?", he wanted to know.
"No. We want to look at the country. But the market sounds interesting. Thank you very much!" Cleo gave him her friendliest smile. Charlotte just nodded. She was a terrible liar and didn't even try.
The two went to the inn, an old wooden building that smelled of wet walls and stew. They paid for a room. The room was small, with a simple bed, two bedside tables with candles, and a tiny closet. Old curtains hung in front of the small window. It was cold in the room. Above the simple bed linen was therefore a thick, faded wool blanket.
"Pretty", Charlotte murmured. "I'm almost relieved that we'll be riding on tomorrow. To the steppe."
"Better than nothing. Let's see if we get something to eat downstairs!"
They got something to eat. Carrot stew and a slice of bread. More was not offered in the inn that evening. Accompanied by a warm tea. It was enough to fill them up.
While the inn's owners and staff were exclusively human, the visitors were not. They sat between humans and vampires celebrating together. There was beer and wine, someone sang a funny song and Cleo and Charlotte got carried away and celebrated with the other guests. Late in the evening, they fell tired into their bed.
The next morning they got still tired on their way to the border.
Julia
"That's why I think I have to leave soon. Better sooner than later," Julia concluded. She sat with her family at the breakfast table and told them all about her visions and the conversation with Finja.
Elodie frowned. "You want to leave this village? I just got Finn back! You can't take him away from me." She stroked her son's cheek and suppressed a sob.
"Mom!" Finn hugged her quickly. "You can join us!"
"I feel too old for that", murmured the wolf. "No. I don't want that."
"And where do you want to go first? To the harpies? Or to the other tribe?", asked Hanno and smiled sympathetically at the wolf. “Your plan sounds very dangerous, Juli. I don't like it either."
"To the harpies. Then I want to go to the Pale Redbacks and then back to the fairy forest. And from there? To the elves and then to the wolves? Or I'm looking for the rebels?" Julia poured herself a cup of fruit tea. "I only planned as far as the fairy forest. But there were also elves and werewolves in my vision. And humans."
"So you rely on your visions?" Flora took some sweet berries. "Are you sure that it will happen?"
"My mother won a war like that." Julia shrugged her shoulders. "She could prevent what she saw. The future is not set in stone, she used to say. At least not for seers. But if I don't do anything, she will also overrun this country."
"That's true...", Marko murmured and looked at Leopold, who raised his eyebrows questioningly.
Josefine grabbed some ham that Gisele had brought them. "We have to go through the desert and then over the mountains. The harpies live high up in the treetops. That's what Mom told me. She said you can't mess with harpies..." She grinned.
"And you won’t do that!", growled Fiete immediately and gave her a sharp look. "You won’t start quarrels with harpies, young lady."
Josefine rolled her eyes, snorting.

"Haven't you been banished? From the dragons?", asked Peter worriedly. "Fiete? And what about Fienchen?"
Fiete grimaced. "Yes... This could be a problem... But not necessarily. I have a bond with Julia. And if the dragons allow Julia to cross their mountains, they must accept my presence and that of Josefine."
"If?", shouted Marko and Finn at the same time.
Leopold looked at Fiete stunned. "And what happens if they don't want to let us through?"
"Why should they?", asked Fiete. At the same time, Josefine hissed angrily: "Then I shred them all to pieces!"
"That sounds convincing", Elodie murmured softly.
Julia sighed. "When that happens, we think of something. Without shredding dragons, Fienchen. After the journey to the harpies, we come back here and then leave for the other tribe. From there we will go through the fairy forest, and... Finja promised me to help with supplies and other things. But nothing more. We have to take care of the rest in the refugee villages."
"We'll stay here and wait for your return", Hanno said and Flora nodded. "We are not soldiers."
"Neither are we", Julia replied. "I am neither a warlord nor a strategist..."
"And Finn?", asked Elodie quietly, stroking her son's head.
"We will protect him!", announced Marko.
"Finn won't come close to a fight", Julia added. "But I have to take him with me. I would leave him here, but that is not possible. I'll bring him back to you, Elodie! I will fight my mom so that you can go back home. To your pack."
"But without my boy", the wolf murmured, sobbing. Finn snuggled up to her.
Peter watched the two sadly and grabbed Fiete's hand and then pressed a fleeting kiss on it. Fiete smiled and pulled him to him.
"I'll come to visit you there. With Juli!", said Finn quietly. He, too, cried. "Don't worry Mom. I'm coming home. Right, Juli?"
Julia nodded. "Flordelis and Tiyam offered to accompany us." She almost forgot. "Against Finja's will."
"Oh." Fiete grinned. "How nice. But centaurs are not made for the high mountains..."
Julia sighed. "But they can accompany us to the redbacks. I think that would be an advantage."
Finn
Marko kissed Finn's neck. Finn grinned. The two sat in the boys' room and enjoyed some alone time together.
"I'm worried...", Finn murmured while Marko was pushing his thin shirt aside to kiss Finn's shoulder. “Marko!"
"Fewer worries, and more kisses!", murmured Marko, carefully laying Finn on his back.
"Marko!", protested Finn immediately. "I'm really worried!"
Marko sighed and lay down next to him. "Me too. But everything will go well. Somehow."
"You mean it?" Finn was extremely skeptical.
"I hope so!" Marko leaned carefully over Finn and winked at him. "More kisses?"
"Way more kisses!", Finn replied. "But..."
"I'm holding back. You don't have to worry! I won’t hurt you, Finn. I'm careful." Marko laughed and kissed Finn again. Sighing, Finn wrapped his arms around him.
"All right", he said quietly. "Kiss me!"
