Julia

The Queen. Drops of blood run down her forehead and cheeks. Poison. Sirens playing in the water. Fire. The queen searches for Julia with visions. She wants Julia by her side when she rules the world. Julia as the Queen's weapon. Julia stands in her mother's way. An army of races. The fairy forest is in flames. Screaming harpies. Angry dragons. Grieving vampires. The queen laughs. An uprising. Rebels who join Julia. Fritz. Elves and werewolves. Blood. Poison. The queen dances. A woman with golden wings surrounded by clouds and light. Julia with a dazzling crown in her hair. Her father collapses in his armchair in front of the fireplace.

Julia blinked. Finn and Josefine were already awake. She heard them talking to each other in the main room. Lazily, she climbed out of her bed and stretched. She had a vision again. And there was the strange dream in which she had encountered harpies too. It made her nervous.

What did these visions mean? Was it time to leave?

At breakfast, Julia listened to her family's conversations, but she herself remained silent until the meal was finished and the dishes were done. Finn wanted to continue sewing on an order and asked if Julia would help him.

"No. Sorry. I need to talk to Finja", she replied quietly.

"With Finja? Why?", asks Finn, confused. "Did something happen?"

"Not yet..." She kissed his cheek. "I'll help you when I'm back, ok?"

"Sure. See you later..." Finn watched her as she made her way to the centaure.

Finja was more than surprised when she saw Julia. "Can I help you, my dear?", she asked after inviting the young witch into her tent. Julia nodded.

"Yes. I need advice."

"Advice?" Finja frowned. "About what?"

"In case of a problem. And with the future." Julia sighed. "I don't know what to do. And so I thought I'd ask a leader."

"That sounds ominous. What happened?" The elderly lady scratched restlessly with her hooves.

The two sat down on soft pillows and Finja handed her a few sweet berries, which Julia gladly accepted. "I had a strange dream and a vision. I think I will leave soon. My mother needs to be stopped and I am convinced that this is exactly what the visions are about. They are a demand. But I can't stand in her way alone. In my vision, I saw an army. Centaurs were among them."

"And you'd like to know if we'd join you in battle? Because your magic asks you to? It sounds like magic is a person of its own..." Finja grinned. "So you want to ask me to join your project?"

"Yes. And no." Julia ruffled her hair. "I don't want to lead an army. I don't want to go to war against my mother. But as it stands, this is my future. Fiete said I would one day be a queen. And then there was this harpy. A ghost? I don't know. I met her in a dream and she also called me a queen."

Flordelis touched Julia's shoulder and smiled sympathetically. "I will not send my people to war, dear. But the Pale Redbacks were thrilled with you and they have a vested interest in defending our country against invaders. Maybe they will help you. As long as my people are not threatened by a foreign queen, I will not lead them into battle."

Julia nodded. "I understand that. But my mother threatens us all. It is already happening. If she is not stopped, she will try to take over this country. She craves power."

"And you don't?" The question was provocative and made Julia blink. She shook her head in surprise. Finja nodded. "I will not expose my people to any danger that may never reach us. All you can give me are your words, child. Words are not enough. Not for such a difficult decision.  So you feel like you have to leave?"

"Yes. And the first thing I have to do is go to the harpies, I think."

"Good. We will help you equip yourself for such a trip. That's all I can offer you. And this: a home. You will always be welcome here."

"Thank you." Julia smiled. "That's more than enough."

"I'd love it if you visit me again, child." Finja laughed softly and accompanied her out of her tent. Meanwhile, there was hustle and bustle in the tent village. She saw Kalle helping his parents carry some fish they had caught in the river. They went behind their tent with it. Amarillis ran with some of her friends laughing between the tents. Small children played. Adults talked or concentrated on their work.

Life in the village was quiet. Julia didn't want to leave. Not after she was finally a normal girl. Far from the castle and her mother's expectations.

Her mother... Had she really killed her father? Julia wiped a tear from her face. Why? And she hadn't been able to say goodbye. Instead, she saw his death in a vision. As if she had been standing next to him. Unable to help her father.

She felt like a small child.

Powerless.

"Julia!" Flordelis hurried to her. Aurel and her brother Tiyam followed her. Tiyam grinned. He had braided his blond hair into a long braid. Aurel, on the other hand, seemed annoyed. Flowers adorned his short hair, which he angrily plucked. He avoided Julia's gaze. Tiyam laughed softly and winked at her.

"Can I help you? Is there anything new?", she finally asked.

"Oh. No. We don't need anything... Aurel fell asleep by the river and a few children played a trick on him!" Tiyam gave him a push, that Aurel angrily fended off.

"Stupid flowers!", he grumbled.

"You look worried, did something happen?", asked Flordelis, hugging Julia. "What's wrong?"

"Too much. I'm leaving soon. To the harpies", she replied.

"What?" Aurel turned pale and handed Tiyam the flowers he plucked from his hair. "Are you insane? For this, you have to go through the desert! This is dragon territory!"

"Are you bored with us?", asked Tiyam. "What a pity!" He threw the flowers into the air so that they fell around him.  Flordelis rolled her eyes.

"Why do you want to go there?", she asked.

"There will be war. And I hope the harpies help me. I asked Finja for advice, and she offered help. But she doesn't want to go into battle. My mother threatens us all. You too. I have to stop her. If she succeeds, she will enslave you centaurs as well. This must not happen." Julia didn't want life in the steppe to be destroyed by a mad queen.

"And Finja doesn't want to help?" Tiyam and Flordelis exchanged astonished looks.

"No", Julia quickly contradicted. "She wants to, but not in battle."

"I'm going with you!", announced Flordelis. Aurel started at her shocked.

Tiyam also nodded. "Just like me. I can't possibly let my little sister go alone. She can’t use manipulation yet. Unlike me. I'll help you, little princess."

"Our parents are going to freak out", Flordelis murmured.

"Then we won't tell them, yet." Tiyam ruffled her hair. "Will you come with us, Aurel?"

"To the land of dragons? To war? No, thank you." He shook his head. "You have no idea what you just offered! This can cost you your life!"

"I'm grateful to you", Julia said quickly. "But I can't ask that of you!"

"You don't have to!" Flordelis looked at some of the tents between which they stood. "I love my homeland. I have to help you."

"Finja advised me to visit the pale redbacks..." A few children ran past Julia laughing. "Do you think that's a good idea?"

"No", Aurel said immediately. "The Pale Redbacks do nothing without being able to gain personal advantage from it. But they love fighting. Better stay here and enjoy your life. Wars are not for people like you. That would destroy you, Julia. You aren’t a warrior."

"I know. Tiyam? Flordelis? Thank you. If you want to accompany me, I gladly accept your help. See you, yes?" Her friends nodded to her and Julia walked on. She watched all the centaurs she had grown fond of. This tribe meant a lot to her.

Then her eyes fell on Pepe and Liam. Liam was dancing with Sofia, who was laughing carefreely. Pepe played with a ball. She arrived at her tent, from which loud voices could be heard. A food battle between Leopold, Marko, and Josefine had broken out in the tent. They threw sweet berries in the main room. When Julia entered the tent, brooding, one of the fruits hit her on the head.

Smiling, she walked past the battle to help Finn sew.
